In his career, he has been a crime reporter, a political reporter, an editor, the chief of a rewrite desk, and a writing trainer. However, hidden behind his comedy and faked authority was the fact that he has also long struggled with depression, although he wasn’t officially diagnosed until about 10 years ago. Since then, Tony has learned (as is his nature) as much as possible about the “affliction” and the remedies that might or might not be available. Through this learning, and after discussions with experts, he has come to the conclusion that depression is (1) a condition (sometimes learned) or disease that (2) can almost never be “cured”, but (3) can be managed. The big question, of course, is how. There are many methods, and he will discuss what worked (and didn’t work) for him. A taste of that discussion may be contained in the quote below from Dan Millman, who, Tony freely admits, he’s NEVER HEARD OF. So don’t beat yourself up and get depressed if you haven’t either. Diana talks about her story - why she loves Watsu® so much... Watsu® with Diana Cheng, Vancouver BC, Canada My name is Diana Cheng. I live in Vancouver, BC. That's in Canada. I do water massage. And I incorporate my energy work in it, as well. So, I practice in two pools. One is totally handicap accessible. The other one is totally private. Just you and I on the whole pool floor. What kind of people come to do this work? Very different types of people, actually. A lot of them is for pain relief. Because the warm water, the back flow of the water, the safety feeling that I provide for them, helps them to relax the mind. And, when your mind is relaxed, your whole body relaxes. So it is very different than putting pressure (although if you like pressure, I can apply to it too.) But it is very different than a deep tissue massage, for example. I do it with very light touch most of the time. And, when your mind feels that there is no fight, then everything relaxes. Because it takes two to fight. And, it is a very sub-conscious process that is very hard to explain. So... For other people, they just want an experience. And that is how I got drawn into it. I looked at some youtube videos of what WATSU is - water shiatsu, bodywork. It can be used for, like, very clinically. But it can also be used to discover what the world is about. I found that every time, I try something new, my world gets much bigger. And a lot of people told me that having a watsu session is like having almost an almost out-of-the body experience. So I thought," I've got to try it before I die!" And then after I tried it, I love it so much. I learned... and now I am a practitioner! In spite of that he was able to achieve outrageous success in his early twenties. He started doing everything to excess, and it wasn’t long before he went into self-destruct mode, which culminated in a crisis at the age of 27 when he came close to suicide. He spent the next 25 years severely depressed, broke, and alone, but now lives a meaningful life, runs a successful business, and has the love of a good woman. Ken will talk about what he learned about depression, and the practical steps he took to get out of it.
