Art Advice I wish I'd never taken

17:06
Hi, everyone! In this video I share the four pieces of art advice I received early on in my career that didn't work for my business. If your goal is to become a successful, full-time artist, perhaps these things will allow you to make the best decisions you possibly can for you and your art business. The 4 things I talk about are: 1. selling my work on several art websites 2. signing up for as many social media channels as possible 3. Focusing on selling my art in galleries 4. Concentrating my time on selling at art fairs **what didn't work for me may very well work for you - my intention here is to promote discussion and to give you some things to consider as you find your path to success. Teaching art or teaching to think like an artist? | Cindy Foley | TEDxColumbus

14:40
What is the purpose and value of Art education in the 21st Century? Foley makes the case the Art’s critical value is to develop learners that think like Artists which means learners who are creative, curious, that seek questions, develop ideas, and play. For that to happen society will need to stop the pervasive, problematic and cliché messaging that implies that creativity is somehow defined as artistic skill. This shift in perception will give educators the courage to teach for creativity, by focusing on three critical habits that artist employ, 1. Comfort with Ambiguity, 2. Idea Generation, and 3. Transdisciplinary Research. This change can make way for Center’s for Creativity in our schools and museums where ideas are king and curiosity reigns. Cindy Meyers Foley is the Executive Assistant Director and Director of Learning and Experience at the Columbus Museum of Art. Foley worked to reimagine the CMA as a 21st century institution that is transformative, active, and participatory. An institution that impacts the health and growth of the community by cultivating, celebrating and championing creativity. Foley envisioned and led the charge to open the 18,000 sq. ft. Center for Creativity in 2011. In 2013, the museum received the National Medal for Museums in recognition of this work. Foley guest edited and wrote chapters for Intentionality and the Twenty-First-Century Museum, for the summer 2014 Journal of Museum Education. In 2012, Foley received the Greater Columbus Arts Council Community Arts Partnership award for Arts Educator. She was a keynote speaker for the OAEA (Ohio Art Education Association) 2012 Conference. She is on the Faculty of Harvard University’s Future of Learning Summer Institute. Foley is a graduate of the University of Kentucky and The Ohio State University. Prior to joining the Museum, she was with the Institute of Contemporary Art at the Maine College of Art, the Portland Museum of Art, and the Wexner Center for the Arts. Building an artist's life: Jolie Guillebeau at TEDxConcordiaUPortland

12:45
Jolie is an artist, a teacher, a storyteller. Daily rituals and frequent collaboration with others energize her and fuel her creativity. Back in 2010, she set a goal to paint 100 paintings in 100 days. Instead she kept the project going for three and a half years, sharing stories along with the paintings. In January 2014, Jolie created her 1000th painting, Soulwork, ending this project—but not the ritual of daily creativity. You'll find her these days with a daily photo on Instagram. Jolie's book, Beauty Everywhere: A Portable Gallery, published in 2012, features 100 of her favorite paintings and their stories. In 2013, her good friend, fellow artist Jen Lee, featured her in the film, Indie Kindred, exploring the possibility and potential of creative collaboration. The first step to becoming an artist | Artist Insider 02

05:30
The first step to becoming an artist isn’t faking your own death or choosing which private island to buy. First you need your own recognisable style and a niche to kick things off! We all know that art is a crowded space - everyone wants to be an artist and make a living out of it. It can be hard to find your own space and style, but I reckon it’s the most important first step. You need to have something that you can show people that is genuinely yours - something that is a little different to everything else out there, that is a little piece of your soul. I recently had an email from Kassy, an up-coming artist from the Sunshine Coast, who asked if I could help her on her journey to becoming an artist. She told me that she was desperate to achieve her dream of being an artist and had tried a whole bunch of ideas… and when they didn’t work out she’d switch and try something else in the hopes that it would be successful. She’d become disillusioned and art wasn’t much fun for her anymore since she was always thinking about who would buy it or what would be popular. She’d imagined from watching my videos that I’d always known what I was doing and that I’d planned my whole career. The truth was her story was eerily similar to mine. I’d wanted to be an artist my whole life and teenage me wanted to be an equine artist and paint horses, when I realised that wasn’t going to be a goer, I studied graphic design when I finished school. Five years later I was working as a designer in London and I had the idea of customising vintage clothing with hand painted patches and making my own jewellery… that never got off the ground so I went back to design. A couple of years after that I decided I was going to make ink drawings of cows and chickens with funny sayings and I’d send them to greeting card companies… I sent them away to greeting card companies and they turned me down… I continued on with Graphic design. Life can be funny sometimes though, after I had given up, I took up surfing for something to do and to offset some of the frustration I was feeling in my day job. About 6 months into it I bought myself a sexy new surfboard and decided to paint it, because, I was after all, someone who dabbled in art now and again. I researched the process, painted that board and put it on YouTube so that other people could paint their own boards… and that was the moment that Fieldey the artist was born! I’ll go a bit deeper into how it all worked out in other episodes, but suffice to say I never in a million years thought I’d be a surfboard artist, but that was a magic element that I needed to craft my own style: the surfboards created a set of guidelines and limits for me to work within: long and skinny, I borrowed a genre that I liked: old school tattoo, that because I was new to acrylic painting would be easy for me to do (big bold outlines) and then I injected that magic ‘X’ element: my own weird self and punny sense of humour.   My advice to Kassy, was to dial it all right back to the beginning… to ignore thoughts about what was popular, or would sell, and go back to the kind of artmaking that bought her joy. As an artist anything could be your inspiration - you have to open yourself right up to the world and sometimes what you are looking for will come at you from leftfield, so it’s your job to have your blinkers off so you’re open to it. Big thank you to Kassy for being the inspiration for this video - good luck in your art journey! Artist Insider Vlogs are a series targeted towards aspiring and emerging artists and creatives. I’ll be discussing my story of how I became an artist and giving you tips and ideas that may help you on your artists’ journey. My name is Fieldey, I’m a surf, skate and street artist from Australia. I started this channel 5 years ago when I was an unhappy corporate designer yearning to become an artist. Since posting my very first video I’ve been on a crazy journey from teaching myself to paint surfboards and skateboards, to painting large-scale street art murals! Turning my passion into a full-time career has been a massive learning curve and I want to pass on the skills and knowledge I’ve learned, as well as inspire others who’re just starting out on their creative journeys. I post on Saturday every fortnight, sometimes more, and you can expect to see easy to follow, Mad Skillz Masterclass tutorials, Artist Insider vlogs and inspirational projects that I’ve been working on. How Can I Be Sure I'm Going To Make Money With My Art - Tips For Artists

10:27
Is there any such thing as a surefire method for making money off of your art? Sure, create more art. It will still be a roller coaster ride in the beginning, just like any other risk that any of us are willing to take, and totally worth the ride. This comes from a question: Biscuit Bleu People never told me I was gonna fail 'cause I'm too scared of telling them I wanna be an artist in some way. Well, I'm actually scared of screwing up and living on cheerios and dirty water for the rest of my life :| I mean, how can I be sure I'm gonna make any money? I'm so socially ankward, I won't even be able to ask for money after a comission :/ Subscribe for more videos as we journey through this crazy thing called life and art: https://www.youtube.com/user/RafiwashereUS Visit our website for art and more info on Rafi and Klee http://www.rafiandklee.com Twitter: @Rafiwashere Facebook: @Rafiwashere Instagram: @rafiwashere Tumblr: artistrafiperez All intro and background music by Klee Angelie on soundcloud Thank you for watching you guys!!!

Career Advice for Every Creative and Artist: How to Be Successful

19:06
How to Be Successful in Your Creative Career So much of becoming successful comes down to preparation, education and networking and understanding the reality of the marketplace and how people really hire talent. If you want to become a designer, artist, writer or photographer, watch this video and please share it. BOOKS YOU SHOULD BE READING https://kit.com/robertoblake/books-to-grow-your-business If you want to be successful as a Creative Professional, you need to learn from someone who is already successful as a creative professional. Your parents are not an authority on the marketplace and what a viable career something is or is not, they don't know because they are not in the marketplace (unless they are). Someone who isn't working, competing or hiring in the Creative Services Industry can't judge it and say whether there is any money in it or not. That's just not real. As for your teachers and professors, they don't know how people hire, because they are not hiring. This isn't to discount them or their view entirely, its to encourage you to seek out information from the source, directly. HOW TO GET HIRED AS A CREATIVE Being hired as a creative is going to come down to work and network. Anyone tell you it's just down to your portfolio doesn't know what they are talking about. It will come down to who you do or don't have access to and who values that work and at what price. You can't sell to someone who isn't buying. Build a portfolio of work that people who you want to work for will buy into, even if it means working for free. I did 1000 free YouTube videos and can get jobs producing and editing content for thousands of dollars as a result. You may not feel great about it, you will take criticism for it but it is literally the way you build a network and referrals. HOW TO BECOME A SUCCESSFUL DESIGNER If you want to be successful as a graphic designer, you need to spend everyday, for the next year producing a quality piece of design work. If you are not good enough or fast enough to complete a worthwhile piece of client work in a day, you will not make it in the real world. You need that level of speed and decisiveness, especially at an agency. If you want to get design clients, search Instagram and twitter for local businesses, look at the ads and website and if sucks, reach out and offer to fix it, if it is good, move on. Yes, I've made money as a designer. HOW TO BECOME A SUCCESSFUL PHOTOGRAPHER If you want to be a successful photographer, shoot the equivalent of 3 rolls of film every single day for a year and edit and post 100 of your best shots every single month for a year. You will have 1000 pieces of quality work to pitch yourself. If you don't have subjects or clients, work for free until you do. Find local businesses that are paying for online ads in Google and Facebook and pitch them your services because you know they have the money. Yes, I've made money as a photographer. HOW TO BECOME A SUCCESSFUL WRITER IF you want to be a successful writer, pick a few topics you feel comfortable writing about. Publish on your blog or on Medium.com everyday for a year. Volunteer to write on blogs and sites you follow for free. Pitch yourself to a few paid ghostwriting services. Identify paid writers and then look up who they write for. Build a network of subject matter experts to interview so you have some good interview candidates to use as leverage. Yes I've made money as writer. HOW TO BECOME A SUCCESSFUL ARTIST If you want to be successful as an artist, create a piece of art everyday for a year. Nope not kidding. Then identify major publications and brands that use that kind of artwork. Pitch them till you get a yes. In the meantime, find online template shops and sell some digital downloads that you can part with. IN the meantime stream creating art on YouTube and get ad revenue and exposure and build a brand. Graphic Designer to Full Time Artist - How to Sell Your Art Online Case Study withAnne Kindl

12:29
This is a case study with Anne Kindl, who took the How to Sell Your Art Online course with The Abundant Artist. You can see the course at http://theabundantartist.com/htsyao NOTE: The video starts abruptly because we cut out some unrelated personal discussion from the beginning of the video. This clip is from a longer informal discussion about the course. Anne Kindl http://www.annekindl.com/home is an artist based in Lexington, Kentucky. She primarily makes landscapes in pastels. Anne first took How to Sell Your Art Online in January 2014. She had previously been a graphic designer, and transitioned into being a professional artist after some health challenges. When she got out of college she hadn’t learned computer skills, but the art industry had all moved to computers. She felt like the Internet was a similar change to the fine art world. What was your thought process like when signing up for the course? When Anne first dove into the course, she said, “there’s a lot here.” She took her time to work through it at her own pace. NOTE: since Anne took the course, we have broken the course into multiple parts, making it much easier to work through the material. We do a major revision every year on the course, and there’s been 3 revisions since she took it. The course offers lots of ideas for various kinds of marketing. Anne said that she initially felt comfortable with using Facebook and Instagram, but it took her a while to get used to the idea of using her website as the central hub for her marketing. Ann likes How to Sell Your Art Online because the course introduces you to all of the options, and you can then pick which marketing activities you want to do. What does your art business look like now? Anne’s art business is really healthy. She has a studio in downtown Lexington, Kentucky, where the orchestra and other arts organizations are housed. She’s done several shows and turned a profit (after paying for her studio and supplies) of $35,000. (By the way, if you didn’t know, Lexington, Kentucky has a thriving arts scene. Check out LexArts at http://lexarts.org/ ) What’s working in your marketing? Instagram. https://www.instagram.com/annekindlstudio/ Ann created a series of new work, where she posted every single day for a year. Her 365 Meditations led to her being featured on the local news, some other magazine publications, and led to several other big projects, including: - Steady sales - Increased private class enrollment - Success with online pop up & unique boutique events (historical venues, farm to table menu, bourbon, live music) Gallery exhibits with Art in Healing Foundations in two states Feature artist video for Creative Lexington (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ijyMg1h_Hc) Featured in Kentucky Better Homes and Gardens (http://kentuckyhomesandgardens.weebly.com) Ann also uses Pinterest and spends focused time on her writing. How did you come up with the idea for the series of art that you made? After taking How to Sell Your Art Online, Ann realized that working in a series is really important. She was attempting to be a more loose, abstract artist, so this new series was a way for her to explore those themes in her art. How long does it take to become a successful artist? Ann did it in two years. Cory talks a little bit about how for many artists, a more realistic timeline is 3 - 5 years for artists who know what they’re trying to do and educate themselves on the right steps. Should someone take the How to Sell Your Art Online course? Yes, but you have to do the work. You actually have to do the suggested work assignments. The Facebook group is really helpful as well. Ann says that she has saved hours by going there for her art business questions. What else do you want to say or add? You have to do other things besides social media. The really good sales that I’ve had are often customers in their 50s or older, and they just don’t do social media as much as younger people. You mentioned that in addition to social media, you’ve been working with foundations. What do you mean when you say that you’ve been working with foundations? There are groups that focus on mental health, eating disorders for women. I donate a portion of my proceeds to them, but the foundation also does a good job of taking care of both the artist and their clients.

The recent changes to Facebook will have an impact on your business page, whether you're an artist or other small business. Has it affected my business? Yes; my post views have been reduced by half, and the less posts that Facebook allows people to see, the fewer paintings people might consider for purchase. In this video I address the many questions I've been receiving lately as to my thoughts on these changes and how it impacts interaction with followers and what you can do to improve your chances of having your posts seen by your followers.
