Inflation and Bubbles and Tulips: Crash Course Economics #7

10:25
In which Adriene and Jacob teach you about how and why prices rise. Sometimes prices rise as a result of inflation, which is a pretty normal thing for economies to do. We'll talk about how across the board prices rise over time, and how economists track inflation. Bubbles are a pretty normal thing for humans to do. One item, like tulips or beanie babies or houses or tech startups experience a rapid rise in prices. This is often accompanied by speculation, a bunch of outrageous profits, and then a nasty crash when the bubble bursts. People get excited about rising prices, and next thing you know, people are trading their life savings for a tulip bulb. Crash Course is on Patreon! The collapse of Venezuela, explained

07:31
The country is in chaos, but its leaders aren't going anywhere. Correction at 1:58: It’s been brought to our notice that the Supreme Court tried to strip the country’s National Assembly of its powers in March 2017 and not 2016. We regret the error. Venezuela was once the richest country in Latin America. It has the largest known oil reserves in the world. And its democratic government was once praised world wide. But today, Venezuela’s democratic institutions and its economy are in shambles. The country has the highest inflation in the world, making food and medicine inaccessible to most Venezuelans. Over the last four years, its GDP has fallen 35%, which is a sharper drop than the one seen during the Great Depression in the US. The country’s murder rate has surpassed that of the most dangerous cities in the world. These conditions have sparked months of protests against the president, Nicolas Maduro. And it’s easy to see why: the country has become measurably worse since his election in 2013. Why a Job Is No Longer Enough In 2018 💵 (More Income Needed!) 💵

Why a Job Is No Longer Enough In 2018 (More Income Needed!) Why It is nearly impossible to get ahead financially with only a job. Is an inflation spike coming soon? Oil prices show that it is likely.

Bellamy Research: http://1000gold.blogspot.com This is the 'dress rehearsal' of my first YouTube presentation but I want to get it out there. Is an inflation increase in the works right now? This video discusses the dependence of price inflation upon energy price changes in the past 3 years. I think this is the crucial factor and that inflation is probably going to spike in the next couple of months against many people's expectations. I am developing an inflation forecasting model based on this. Veterinary Prices Outpacing Current Economy, Inflation

01:34
At the 2018 VetPartners Annual Meeting, Amanda Landis-Hanna, DVM, senior manager of veterinary outreach for PetSmart Charities, listened to Micheal Dicks, PhD, from the American Veterinary Medical Association, talk about the current veterinary economic model. Dr. Dicks said while there has been some improvement in the U.S. economy, veterinary medicine has been increasing their prices significantly higher. In many cases, Dr. Dicks said, veterinary practices have inflated the costs of some services higher than what the average economy is able to keep up with. He suggests to delay increasing prices any more and allow inflation to catch up naturally. Then, veterinary practices need to pay closer attention to what is going on with the economy and adjust their prices more accordingly. Ford, Carter, and the Economic Malaise: Crash Course US History #42

A sort of perfect storm of events, it combined the continuing decline of America's manufacturing base and the oil shocks of 1973 and 1979, and brought about an stagnant economy, paired with high inflation. Economists with a flair for neologisms and portamenteau words called this "stagflation," and it made people miserable. Two presidential administrations were scuttled at least in part by these economic woes; both Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter are considered failed presidents for many reasons, but largely because of an inability to improve the economy. (hint: In reality, no one person can materially change something as big as the world economy, even if they are president, but one person sure can make a handy scapegoat!) So, by and large, the 70s were a pretty terrible time in America economically, but at least the decade gave us Mr. Green. Crash Course World History is now available on DVD! RTD News: Inflation in Venezuela Seen Hitting 1,500% in 2017

02:44
Subscribe and share the RTD news articles... The economic situation in Venezuela continues to go from bad to worse, and things are unlikely to get better, experts have warned. This week, Venezuela's congress was stripped of its powers over the budget, viewed as a move by the country's President Nicolas Maduro as an attempt to consolidate power. On top of this, the country lacks many basic goods and inflation is out of control. Year-on-year inflation is expected to reach 700 percent this year and UBS forecasts it will reach 1,500 percent next year. "This situation is vastly deteriorating," Diego Moya-Ocampos, senior Latin America analyst at IHS Country Risk, told CNBC. "We expect the economy to contract at least 11.5 percent, inflation to hit 700 percent, already the highest in the world." Additional Venezuela news videos: 1. Retail inflation eases to 2.19% in December

01:35
New Delhi (India) Jan 15 (ANI): In a major relief to consumers, India's retail inflation rate showed a downward trend, touching an 18-month low of 2.19 per cent in December 2018 on account of moderation in the prices of fuel, fruits and vegetables. In November last year, the inflation based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 2.33 per cent as compared to 5.21 per cent a year ago in December 2017. In June 2017, inflation was as low as 1.46 per cent. The contraction in inflationary pressure raises hope for a cut in the lending rate by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) during the monetary policy review meeting, scheduled to take place next month. According to Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the annual rate of inflation, based on monthly wholesale price index (WPI) stood at 3.80 per cent (provisional) for December 2018 (over December 2017) as compared to 4.64 per cent. The WPI for 'food articles' group declined by 1.4 per cent to 144.0 (provisional) from 146.1 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of fruits and vegetables (8 pc), peas/chawali (7 pc), condiments and spices (2 pc) and paddy (1 pc). The index for 'non-food articles' group declined by 0.1 per cent to 124.5 (provisional) from 124.6 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of guar seed (6 per cent), raw cotton and castor seed (3 per cent each), groundnut seed (2 per cent) and raw rubber, rape, mustard seed and raw silk (1 pc each). According to official details, the WPI for fuel and power group also declined by 5.9 per cent to 103.5 (provisional) from 110.0 (provisional) for the previous month, while the index for manufactured products declined by 0.4 per cent to 118.3 (provisional) from 118.8 (provisional) for the previous month. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☛ Subscribe to our Youtube Channel - https://goo.gl/k1Aee1 ☛ Visit our Official website: https://www.aninews.in/ Enjoy and stay connected with us!! ☛ Like us: https://www.facebook.com/ANINEWS.IN ☛Follow us : https://twitter.com/ANI ☛ Circle us : https://goo.gl/QN5kXy ☛ Feedback to Shrawan K Poddar : [email protected]

01:09:00
Inflation, the Money Supply, and the Fed—Steven Cunningham, director of research and education. Inflation has long been a flagship concern of AIER. Several articles in the past year have pointed to the danger of high inflation created by the quantitative easing that came about in response to the financial crisis. Director of Research Steven Cunningham wrote many of these, including a much-quoted analysis that a 15 percent inflation rate is not improbable.

Good Drugs Bad People & Insane Inflation - Martin Shkreli's Super Villain Prediction comes True

04:19
The Economic Evil Super Villain du jour - Martin Shkreli made a horrible prediction and it is coming true. Pharmaceutical companies are doing major price hikes across the board. Which is bad news because while everyone is required to have health insurance, nothing was written into the affordable healthcare act to keep a leash on medical costs. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-02-02/shkreli-not-alone-in-drug-price-spikes-as-skin-gel-soars-1-860 Oh shit. That's a problem. God Bless Everyone, T @newTHOR on twitter https://www.facebook.com/thornewsgo From the Bloomberg article Prices more than doubled for 60 drugs in the past year House hearing Thursday will focus on soaring drug prices "After Martin Shkreli raised the price of anti-parasitic drug Daraprim more than 50-fold to $750 a pill last year, he said he wasn’t alone in taking big price hikes. As it turns out, the former drug executive was right. A survey of about 3,000 brand-name prescription drugs found that prices more than doubled for 60 and at least quadrupled for 20 since December 2014. Among the biggest increases was Alcortin A, a combination steroid and antibiotic gel to treat eczema and skin infections: The price soared 1,860 percent, or almost 20-fold, during the period. And a vial of Aloprim, a Mylan NV drug for cancer complications, more than doubled, according to the survey by DRX, a provider of price-comparison software to health plans. Skyrocketing prices are getting increased scrutiny ahead of a U.S. congressional hearing this week: Democratic Representative Elijah Cummings, ranking member on a committee that is probing drug pricing, said Tuesday that pricing “tactics are not limited to a few ‘bad apples,’ but are prominent throughout the industry.” Even after soaring prices became an issue in the U.S. presidential campaign, the cost of many drugs has continued to rise at annual rates of more than 10 percent. Drugmakers raised the prices of products as wide-ranging as erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, heart treatments, dermatology medicine and even brands that long have lost their patents. While specialty companies have had the steepest hikes, giants such as Pfizer Inc. and GlaxoSmithKline Plc kept pushing through smaller rises. “The data shows that price increases are an integral part of the business plan,” said Jim Yocum, executive vice president at DRX. Pharmaceutical companies often boost prices around the end and the start of the year, and the scale of recent increases was higher than what Yocum has seen in the past few years. About 400 formulations of brand-name drugs went up at least 9.9 percent since early December, according to DRX. Crestor, Viagra Drugmakers say that they offer significant discounts off of list price to insurers, and inexpensive generic alternatives are available. And they say they invest large amounts in research & development to come up with new breakthroughs. Among recent increases by the world’s biggest pharmaceutical companies is AstraZeneca Plc’s blockbuster cholesterol drug Crestor, up 15 percent ahead of the arrival of a generic version in May. AstraZeneca said that it decides on price changes annually based on market conditions, a common industry practice, and it offers a savings program on Crestor that reduces co-payments to as little as $3 per prescription. Pfizer raised prices for 24 drugs by 12 percent or more in the past two months, with Viagra increasing about 13 percent and two heart drugs whose price went up 44 percent and 86 percent, according to DRX. The New York-based drugmaker said that list prices don’t reflect discounts offered to the government, managed-care organizations, commercial health plans and programs that restrict any increases above the inflation rate. In the U.S. biopharma business, the average price increase was 6 percent last year, Pfizer said in an e-mail. Meanwhile GlaxoSmithKline increased prices by 15 percent on 22 products over the past two months, including Lamictal XR for epilepsy, according to DRX. “Price increases for some medicines are a reality in a competitive U.S. marketplace and we strive to handle them thoughtfully,” Glaxo said by e-mail. After discounts, the London-based company said U.S. prices declined from 2014 to 2015. Mylan declined to comment.

What If There Were No Taxes?

Viewers like you help make PBS (Thank you 😃) . As strange as this may seem to modern Americans, until the 16th amendment, the USA didn’t have a permanent federal income tax. So how would America be different if federal income taxes had never been made into law? Watch the episode to find out. *As some of our viewers noted, in our previous version we did not thoroughly explain how the Federal Government allocates tax dollars between mandatory spending (which goes to entitlement programs and is mandated by law) and discretionary spending (which is what congress makes decisions on annually during the appropriations process). Since we always strive for accuracy and clarity, in this revised version we explore the difference as it relates to both military/defense budgets and the cost of entitlement spending, and how a lack of a federal income tax would have effected their histories.
