After the second world war, technological advances in food production led to a new era, that was characterized by an overabundance of inexpensive food, and relatively little physical activity. In the decades that followed, other sociocultural shifts continued to contribute to the changing way we ate. Women who had previously controlled most of the average family's food preparation now entered the workforce in significant numbers. And the processed food industry began to capitalize on our need for fast, convenient food. This meant that fewer meals were being cooked at home. And since convenience foods were generally higher in calories than home-cooked meals, the average person's caloric intake increased dramatically. Maya Adam, MD, is waging a battle cry against one of America’s most critical – and challenging – public health crises of our generation: childhood obesity. It turns out it’s not so simple and some of the most promoted and popular foods can, in fact, harm you. Never eat these 10 dangerous foods for the sake of your own health and the health of your family. Even if you see the juice labels “not from concentrate” or “100% pure”, don't let this fool you. Juice, after being squeezed from different fruits, is kept in huge vacuum-sealed tanks where it can sit for up to a year before being packaged! And by that time, the juice has lost all its flavor, which is why manufacturers have to add artificial flavoring to make it taste fruity again. In most cases, cereals are loaded with refined carbohydrates and sugar. Even if the label assures you that it's fat-free and whole grain, check the list of ingredients. You'll most likely see that the product is full of sugar. Despite common belief, most yogurts don't contain probiotic bacteria since the process of pasteurization kills all these microorganisms. When consumed, trans-fats in ice-cream can cause high cholesterol, stroke, heart disease, and even cancer. Ice cream is also loaded with sugar, artificial flavors, and synthetic preservatives. And if it’s pink, purple, or red, it’s most likely been colored with cochineal extract or carmine, additives which can cause bad allergic reactions. Popcorn has some genetically modified ingredients as well as taste-boosting chemicals and additives. This leads to health problems such as heart attacks, digestive issues, allergies, skin rashes, breathing problems, and the depressing list goes on. Even more, popcorn is extremely caloric. Because stylish and fun breakfast sets great mood for the working day. So here's the hack. I guess everybody has some eggs and sausages in the fridge pretty much all the time. You'll need 4 and a half sausages. First of all, cut every sausage in halves. Then cut every half in half again. And join two parts together with a toothpick. Now put these sausages in the form of a star on the frying pan and break three eggs inside of the star. When your starry eggs are ready take out the toothpicks and add some tomatoes and greens to your liking! Great way to debone cherries especially if you will feed them to an infant is following. Take a glass bottle with a narrow neck, put a cherry on top one by one and then press on it with a wooden stick. Chopsticks will work just as good. Simply genius and incredibly easy way to peel off kiwis – cut a kiwi in half, take a mixer whisk, insert it right in the kiwi and turn around. You’ll get 4 neat slices without any traces of kiwi peel, which is notorious for the tongue irritation. Here’s how to cut a pomegranate in the best way possible. Cut out an upper part of the pomegranate’s skin in a circle or a pentagon. Take it out and then you’ll see the lines where you need to cut in order to take off the seeds properly. Here's an awesome way to roast an onion. Cut it with an apple cutter, soak in an egg wash, strew it with breadcrumbs profusely, and put in the boiling oil. Voila! Your onion lotus is ready! It's great to eat with ketchup by the by! This amazing chef creates mind-blowing food illusions that will definitely impress you! Chef Ben Churchill has been a professional chef for over 10 years. Around 3 years ago, he realised there was one area of cooking he had never really dabbled in: pastry. He started teaching himself the basics but soon grew tired of the conventional aspects of the pastry world. Everyone was doing the same cakes, mousses and pastries. This is when he started thinking about lemons. Could chocolate be worked to form the shape of a fruit, but contain a hidden surprise? He crudely constructed a chocolate shell by moulding yellow chocolate around a lemon, cutting the citrus fruit out then joining it back together, but not before filling it with chocolate ganache. It worked! It was rough, and crudely made, but it worked! Now his mind was opened. What else could be done? What else can be made? How far can desserts go? So he started experimenting. Carrot cake shaped like a carrot, beetroot shaped brownies, coconut mushroom meringues. With each dessert he was teaching himself new skills, new ideas. This is when he started to move even deeper into what he calls ‘food illusions’; desserts designed to trick and confuse. The ethos has always been the same however. The flavours must always remain true to the theme. A dessert based on the computer game Fallout, for example, should include flavours relevant to a post nuclear wasteland: sour sugar, lemonade, popping candy. As the desserts became more elaborate, so started the criticism. Some people in the world online couldn’t believe they were edible. They must be constructed with something other than food. So he decided to start filming himself making them. He showed himself creating, then eating the food illusions. This is when his profile really grew. His Facebook and Instagram started gaining followers, the video quality and editing skills improved, and the desserts kept on coming. People watching the desserts just wasn’t enough for him. He wanted people to experience them for themselves, to try making them, to start thinking like he does. So he began writing "Food Illusions volume 1". A compilation of some techniques, thoughts, articles and of course full desserts. Completely self-produced, from the photos to the design, it was released in November 2017 through Amazon. It was very well received by food illusion fans both new and old, and has shifted over 1,000 copies to date. What next? As of late his desserts have taken a sinister turn. Following on from the success of his washing up sponge dessert (olive oil sponge, topped with a mint crumb and served with a milk foam and apple puree to replicate a scrubbing sponge) he is now playing on the idea of not only making desserts that look like other things, but making them resemble unappealing items. The idea is to challenge people’s perceptions of taste. To add that element of surprise, and be delicious. Examples include the edible soap bar (lemon parfait, lavender gel and chamomile shortbread), the mouldy orange (a conventional mirror glazed imitation orange, but with the addition of bubble gum meringue powder for a realistic mouldy look) and most famously, the edible ashtray. A vanilla pannacotta set in an ashtray, topped with silver chocolate, meringue ash and chocolate cigarette butts. The reactions have been better than expected. Love it or hate it, they definitely get people talking. These desserts will set the theme for his next book, "Food illusions volume 2". There will be many desserts in the same style as these. Despite the unbelievable simplicity of this recipe and the super-fast procedure, the Kele ki Sabzi has a very enjoyable flavour, which will be loved by all. It is also very convenient to prepare, because it makes use of common tempering ingredients and spice powders. Banana too is something that is available at home almost all the time. So, when you have had a really tiring day, and wish to have something quick and homely, just toss together this lovely subzi and serve it fresh with rotis . Let the bananas be slightly firm so that the roundels will retain their shape. If they are too ripe, the subzi will get soggy and the spice powders too will not mix properly. Kele ki Sabzi Preparation Time: 10 minutes Cooking Time: 3 minutes Makes 3 servings Ingredients 1 ½ cups banana roundels 1 ½ tbsp oil 1 tsp mustard seeds ( rai / sarson) ¼ tsp asafoetida (hing) 1 tsp chilli powder ¼ tsp turmeric powder (haldi) 1 tsp coriander-cumin seeds powder (dhania-jeera) 1 tsp sugar 2 tbsp finely chopped coriander (dhania) Salt to taste 1. Heat the oil in a broad non-stick pan, add the mustard seeds and asafoetida and sauté on a medium flame for 30 seconds. 2. Add the bananas, chilli powder, turmeric powder, coriander- cumin seeds powder, sugar, cori-ander and salt, mix well and cook on a medium flame for 2 minutes, while stirring occasionally. 3. Serve immediately.
