The truth is that to attract investors, you have to do three things: 1) build momentum for your business 2) get covered in press so that investors hear about you, and 3) reach out to the investors directly. Even if you do build momentum for your business,, and are getting clients and making sales, it is still not simple to attract investors. While it is their job to seek out great companies, they generally deal with so many companies bombarding them with requests for an investment, that investors have very little time to actually go out and seek companies out. So generally, you do not attract investors to you, but rather make sure that they take notice when you make an effort to reach them. So just like you would do if you worked in sales, instead of waiting to attract investors, you have to be where they are. They usually browse various publications that cover their industries. So getting press can be one way to attract investors, and get them to notice your business. So when you are ready to seriously begin your fundraising efforts, and your business has grown enough to attract an investor, you can attract investors by reaching out to them. Hopefully they will already be familiar with your business from hearing about you in various press coverage. If they are already familiar with your business, it will be simpler to attract those investors. In this video, we'll look into traction requirements, pitch decks, alternative funding sources and on how to find investors. This is seed funding for entrepreneurs. I'm the CEO of a company called Slidebean, and thousands of startups have used our platform to create their pitch decks. Their success is our success, and this is why we get involved with them and have learned a thing or to about what works, and what doesn't. I started my first company in 2011, and I failed at raising capital. I know the pain of shutting down a website you spent countless hours on, and having to email all your customers to say it's game over. The problem with my first company is that we spent too much time trying to find investors, hence we failed to notice some of the fundamental flaws in our product. For Slidebean, we raised a seed round of $800,000 which has allowed us to grow to a team of 25, increase our revenue to seven digits and become profitable in the process. And yeah, it was hard. I'm telling you this because I want you to trust my advice. I tried and failed, and I can look back and see why I got a 'NO' from most of the 142 investors I pitched. Yeah, 142 to raise $800,000. So let's talk about traction, first. I have this problem with startup press (but we love YOU, @jordanrcrook). It gives new founders a false notion of how fundraising works. You read the story of Yo, an app that just sent notifications saying 'Yo' and how they raised a $1,000,000 seed round, and you assume that's something anyone with a couple of lines of code can do. Most companies raise money AFTER getting traction. Very few companies raise money with just a prototype and no users, and certainly, NO company raises money without a fully formed founding team. The most extreme case here is tech companies that are trying to raise money to hire a CTO. This makes no sense. Tech talent is expensive, and it's scarce, and the first proof that your company is worth something is that you managed to find a full stack developer that would turn down a job at Google to work on this idea. As a CEO, you need to be able to find and convince that guy, who joins your company for the stock and not for the salary; when he could be making $150,000/yr otherwise. The reality of startup fundraising today, at least in Silicon Valley and New York, is that companies are pitching investors with traction, excellent traction. Traction usually comes in the form of revenue: tens of thousands of dollars per month, growing over +20% month-over-month. I'm not making this up, check this article by VC Elizabeth Yin. Pure play, no-revenue traction counts only when you are dealing with millions of users and fantastic retention rates. So how can you get to these numbers venture capitalists expect, if you don't have any money to start with? Yeah well, bootstrapping. We bought our domain in 2013 and started working on our product, but it was only after 18 months that we managed to get any decent money to ramp up growth. It was $100,000 from the 500 Startups program, but we'll talk about accelerators in a minute. From May 2013 through October 2014 we bootstrapped. We did part-time consulting so we could pay our bills. We had a $1,000 salary each, and we shared an apartment. It was barely enough, but the backgrounds of the three founders made up for all the talent we needed: no need to hire anyone. More videos and coaching are available here: http://www.nathangold.com/ When you are given the opportunity to pitch your company and all you have is a microphone and a panel of investors waiting for you to pitch, you need to be well scripted and rehearsed for the performance. Without a script indelibly inscribed in your brain, you will usually run over on time, not cover everything you wanted to talk about, or worse, completely lose your way. This cannot and should not be an extemporaneous talk where you condense your 10 minute presentation into 2 minutes. The real purpose of the 2 minute pitch is to convince an investor to ask you questions that will ultimately lead to one of two outcomes. Either they will like you enough to continue talking with you or they can become a resource for you to leverage at some time in the future. Recently, at the VCTaskforce in Palo Alto, California, 10 companies were given 2 minutes to pitch to a panel of angel investors. These were who's who in Silicon Valley, such as Tom Cervantez co-founder of the Harvard Angels, Raffy Chatav from Silicom Ventures, John Ryan from Band of Angels, and Paul Twombly from Keiretsu Forum. You should see what these people give as feedback to people who obviously have not really prepared for the event. Speaking of preparing, that is exactly what this video is all about. You will learn how to have a great opening that will capture the attention of the listener. Following that, you'll be able to clearly articulate the value of your business by answering 6 questions on the minds of your investors. After watching this video, you will clearly understand and know how NOT to sound the S.A.M.E. as other presenters. And, you'll be able to effectively use the Columbo Close, a powerful attention-getting tool, as the last words the investor will hear from you. The information contained in this video is the result of the last 6 years of delivering workshops and coaching real people who are raising capital. These angel investors typically come in four distinct groups: 👉Individual Angel Investors- As for finding angel investors directly, this is the hardest route, by far. First, because they prefer to stay anonymous. And, second, because they don't know you at all. Sometimes rich individuals have built formal family investment offices, with professional managers screening deals for them. But,if they can afford a family office, they prefer to invest $5MM+ in more typical venture investments, not $500K for a startup. Preferably, you need to find an individual that understands your industry and business model and can bring real value to the table. If they have first hand experience in your space, and they think they can help you accelerate your efforts, it is easier for them to get over the investment hurdle. So, identify those individuals, and try to figure out someone they know, who can credibly make an introduction for you. As an example, if you think you have the next great video gaming technology, I would research what similar video game technologies have recently been sold (meaning the founder just got very cash rich), and reach out to that founder to tap into their expertise as an advisor, board member or investor. Notice, I didn't lead with investor. You need to establish credibility with this individual before jumping into the investment question. And, if he doesn't want to invest, he may know others in the industry that would, so ask him for references. Venture capital firms are also aware of key angels in their market, so reach out to them for guidance. Angel List is a particularly good resource that makes finding angels for your region/industry easier than ever, so check them out as a good place to start. But, again, look for credible relationships to help open the door for you, preferably to investor is your home market (as most angels tend to bias local investments). 👉Angel Investor Networks This category, is my favorite category: networks aggregating angel investors. Like the family offices, investors set aside funds for angel investments, screened by a professional team that sources deals for the network. So, the individual angel gets to keep their anonimity and have the comfort of a team of smart managers doing due diligence on investment targets, on their behalf. So, instead of one angel investing $1MM by themself, 100 angels aggregate $100MM and invest as a group in the deals they like the best, individually or collectively. Welcome to another episode of Funding Simplified, where I simplify the business funding process and share lessons I have learned after being involved in over $500M in debt or equity deals. In today’s episode, I wanted to talk about how to attract angel investors.   There are many things that angel investors look for in a startup opportunity. But among those things, there are a few that are more powerful than the others.   Here are just three things that can help you attract angel investors.   A team   Not just any team, but a real experienced team. In fact, if at all possible, having someone on your team that has been in the startup industry for a while and has had success (i.e. has sold a startup before) goes a long way in attracting angel investors. If your team doesn’t have that level of startup experience or any at all, that is ok. Maybe you have a lot of domain or industry experience that you can lean on to help you be successful.    One thing I don’t recommend is the lone employee approach. Investors often frown on a lack of teammates. That is because it is unlikely that you can do everything or that you have every skill set needed to successfully run your business.   An addressable market   Opinions vary on the most common reason startups fail. Reasons like a lack of funding or an inexperienced team are common. Another common reason is that your idea didn’t really have a market to address where there was enough demand. Which is something you should have uncovered in your validation efforts?   On the other hand, when you can prove that the market is demanding a solution like your’s and they are willing to pay for it then you are off to a good startup with investors.   IP   Not every investor requires that a startup they fund has intellectual property. However, the investors I know really well love startups that do have intellectual property protection in place.
