The Stock Market Explained Simply: Finance and Investing Basics - Animated Film (1957)

10:20
The New York Stock Exchange (sometimes referred to as "the Big Board") provides a means for buyers and sellers to trade shares of stock in companies registered for public trading. The NYSE is open for trading Monday through Friday from 9:30 am -- 4:00 pm ET, with the exception of holidays declared by the Exchange in advance. The NYSE trades in a continuous auction format, where traders can execute stock transactions on behalf of investors. They will gather around the appropriate post where a specialist broker, who is employed by an NYSE member firm (that is, he/she is not an employee of the New York Stock Exchange), acts as an auctioneer in an open outcry auction market environment to bring buyers and sellers together and to manage the actual auction. They do on occasion (approximately 10% of the time) facilitate the trades by committing their own capital and as a matter of course disseminate information to the crowd that helps to bring buyers and sellers together. The auction process moved toward automation in 1995 through the use of wireless hand held computers (HHC). The system enabled traders to receive and execute orders electronically via wireless transmission. On September 25, 1995, NYSE member Michael Einersen, who designed and developed this system, executed 1000 shares of IBM through this HHC ending a 203 year process of paper transactions and ushering in an era of automated trading. As of January 24, 2007, all NYSE stocks can be traded via its electronic hybrid market (except for a small group of very high-priced stocks). Customers can now send orders for immediate electronic execution, or route orders to the floor for trade in the auction market. In the first three months of 2007, in excess of 82% of all order volume was delivered to the floor electronically.[23] NYSE works with US regulators like the SEC and CFTC to coordinate risk management measures in the electronic trading environment through the implementation of mechanisms like circuit breakers and liquidity replenishment points.[24] Until 2005, the right to directly trade shares on the exchange was conferred upon owners of the 1366 "seats". The term comes from the fact that up until the 1870s NYSE members sat in chairs to trade. In 1868, the number of seats was fixed at 533, and this number was increased several times over the years. In 1953, the number of seats was set at 1,366. These seats were a sought-after commodity as they conferred the ability to directly trade stock on the NYSE, and seat holders were commonly referred to as members of the NYSE. The Barnes family is the only known lineage to have five generations of NYSE members: Winthrop H. Barnes (admitted 1894), Richard W.P. Barnes (admitted 1926), Richard S. Barnes (admitted 1951), Robert H. Barnes (admitted 1972), Derek J. Barnes (admitted 2003). Seat prices varied widely over the years, generally falling during recessions and rising during economic expansions. The most expensive inflation-adjusted seat was sold in 1929 for $625,000, which, today, would be over six million dollars. In recent times, seats have sold for as high as $4 million in the late 1990s and as low as $1 million in 2001. In 2005, seat prices shot up to $3.25 million as the exchange entered into an agreement to merge with Archipelago and become a for-profit, publicly traded company. Seat owners received $500,000 in cash per seat and 77,000 shares of the newly formed corporation. The NYSE now sells one-year licenses to trade directly on the exchange. Licences for floor trading are available for $40,000 and a licence for bond trading is available for as little as $1,000 as of 2010.[25] Neither are resell-able, but may be transferable in during the change of ownership of a cooperation holding a trading licence. On February 15, 2011 NYSE and Deutsche Börse announced their merger to form a new company, as yet unnamed, wherein Deutsche Börse shareholders will have 60% ownership of the new entity, and NYSE Euronext shareholders will have 40%. On February 1, 2012, the European Commission blocked the merger of NYSE with Deutsche Börse, after commissioner Joaquin Almunia stated that the merger "would have led to a near-monopoly in European financial derivatives worldwide".[38] Instead, Deutsche Börse and NYSE will have to sell either their Eurex derivatives or LIFFE shares in order to not create a monopoly. On February 2, 2012, NYSE Euronext and Deutsche Börse agreed to scrap the merger.[39] In April 2011, IntercontinentalExchange (ICE), an American futures exchange, and NASDAQ OMX Group had together made an unsolicited proposal to buy NYSE Euronext for approximately US$11 billion, a deal in which NASDAQ would have taken control of the stock exchanges.[40] NYSE Euronext rejected this offer two times, but it was finally terminated after the United States Department of Justice indicated their intention to block the deal due to antitrust concerns. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_Stock_Exchange

Top 10 Countries With The LARGEST Gold Reserves!

Check out these 10 countries with the largest gold reserves in the world! India According to the World Gold Council, the Bank of India currently holds 557.7 tons of gold. It is one of the largest stores of gold in the world! This makes up 9.9 % of the country’s total foreign reserve. Foreign exchange reserves is money or other assets held by a nation’s central bank so they can back the national currency. India, home to 1.25 billion people, is the number one largest consumer of the precious metal. Furthermore, India is one of the most reliable drivers of global demand. For example, India’s festival and wedding season, which runs from October to December, has historically been a major market for gold. And probably, one of the most interesting facts about India and gold is that India rarely invests much in gold. This is because as a country, India operates under the belief that buying gold leads to a deficit. And their belief must be proving right as things also seem to be improving for India. For instance, if you look at the last few years, India has increased its gold reserves from 557.74 to 557.77. While this might not seem like a lot, India is also at its highest point in history! In addition to what the country holds, Indian households which are considered the world’s largest hoarders of gold, hold a record 23,000-24,000 tons, which is worth about $800 billion. 9.) Netherlands In the past few years, the Netherlands has held 52% of its foreign reserve in gold. The Netherlands has a reported 612.45 tons. In 2016 it was reported that the bank was looking for a place to store all its gold because they were going to renovate the vaults and needed to moving it. The Dutch central bank is planning to move the country’s gold reserves from the center of Amsterdam to a new complex called the Cash Center. Like most countries, Dutch gold is also held in banks around the world to reduce risk. Security measures to guard the gold 24/7 have become a problem in Amsterdam. 189,000 kilos of gold will be moved at the beginning of 2022. Maybe this is one reason that over the last decade and a half, the Netherlands was selling off tons of gold in order to reduce its reserve. However, there weren’t that many buyers out there and they sold less than the country wanted. More recently the country has had less ambition to sell gold. Currently, the country holds the same amount of tons, 612.45 that they have over the last few years. However, the country has increased its percentage of foreign reserves to 61.2 %. 8.) Japan Japan is another country which had been increasing its gold reserves since the 1960’s. Their official gold holdings were reported at 765.2 tons. About 2.4% of Japan’s gold today is in foreign reserve. Historically, Japan has always held a bit more gold than other countries. This was true until 2011, when they began to sell some of their reserve in order to pump money into the economy after the tsunami and the following Fukushima nuclear disaster. But even with selling, Japan’s central bank has been one of the most aggressive practitioners of quantitative easing. For example, in January of 2016, it lowered interest rates below zero, which has helped fuel demand in gold around the world. 7.) Switzerland Prior to 1997, Switzerland was steadily building its gold reserves. In 1997, the decision was made to sell some of those reserves to bolster the Swiss currency and diversify the foreign reserves. The percent of foreign reserves in Switzerland is currently 6.7 %. Switzerland actually has the world’s largest reserves of gold per capita and currently has reported 1,040 tons. Over time, many citizens in the country started to feel like the bank was getting rid of too much gold. They then banded together with the “Save the Swiss” movement. However, once everyone was able to vote in 2014, the vote came to a no, and gold continued to be sold. During World War II, Switzerland became the center of the gold trade in Europe, making transactions with both the Allies and Axis powers. Today, much of its gold trading is done with Hong Kong and China. Around last year, the Swiss National Bank made a $5.9 billion profit, reportedly from its gold holdings. Stock exchanges

03:23
(Today, this is somewhat outdated...) The NYSE Another way of looking at stocks is by where the stocks are traded. Most of the large blue chip stocks are traded on the New York Stock Exchange. The NYSE, also called the Big Board, lists about 3,000 firms, including many foreign companies. The NYSE uses an auction method of trading stocks where a so-called specialist matches buy and sell orders. AMEX This method of trading stocks is also seen on the American Stock Exchange, or AMEX. The AMEX is smaller than the NYSE, and the AMEX lists a relatively large number of energy companies. NASDAQ The Big Board's main competitor, however, is the NASDAQ market. Although NASDAQ lists 5,000 companies, or 2,000 more companies than the NYSE, the total market capitalization of the Big Board is larger than NASDAQ. This is because NASDAQ lists smaller, newer companies. However, many multi-billion dollar companies like Intel and Microsoft are listed on NASDAQ. NASDAQ, however, uses a different method of trading stocks. Unlike the NYSE, NASDAQ does not use specialists to match buy and sell orders. Instead, NASDAQ features a number of so-called market makers. These market makers must offer bid and ask prices for those stocks that they make a market in. A number of market makers are supposed to maintain an orderly and competitive market, and market makers can keep inventories of stocks. In fact, the ability to buy and sell stocks from their inventory gives market makers a good chance to make money. The over-the-counter market In addition to the NASDAQ, there's the so-called over-the-counter market. This market includes nearly 30,000 publicly traded companies, but the trading volume of these stocks is low. Prices of these stocks used to be published on pink paper, so these stocks are still sometimes called pink sheet stocks. These stocks aren't listed on any of the major exchanges, but they are still publicly traded. Many of these stocks are low-priced, so-called penny stocks. Penny stocks If you ever get a cold call from a broker trying to sell you a fast-rising but unknown company, think twice before buying the stock. Many of these stocks are thinly traded, so it's easy for a few people to ramp up the price of the stock by trading the stock amongst themselves. This can produce spectacular price increases, and provides evidence that the stock can "only go up". On the way up the original investors cash out as pushy brokers sell the stock to outside investors who provide the escape mechanism. However, after the original speculators leave, trading volume in the stock dries up, and the outsiders are left holding expensive shares that they can't sell to anyone at any price. There are many excellent, small companies that aren't listed on the major stock exchanges, but unless you know what you're doing here's a good piece of advice : Don't buy any stock whose value you can't determine by looking it up in your local newspaper. NYSE vs NASDAQ - who has more "mega cap" listings?

04:16
The two biggest stock exchanges in the world, in terms of total market capitalization value of the shares listed, are the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the NASDAQ. But which of these two stock exchanges has the highest number of “mega caps”? Take your guess and find out in this Finance Storyteller video. Historically, the NYSE has always had the largest total market capitalization of companies listed, while the NASDAQ allows a far larger number of companies to be listed, particularly those that may be too small to meet the requirements of the NYSE. The NASDAQ also has far lower listing fees than the NYSE. What are “mega cap” companies? Well, these are the Big Dogs! A “mega cap” is a company with a market capitalization exceeding $100 billion, some would even say exceeding $200 billion. Let’s take a look at a subset of the top 25 companies in the world in terms of market capitalization, in the middle of May 2017. 15 out of these 25 companies have their primary listing in the US, so on either the NYSE or NASDAQ. Philip de Vroe (The Finance Storyteller) aims to make strategy, finance and leadership enjoyable and easier to understand. What Is A Stock Exchange - A Beginners Guide

06:58
Brought to you by http://www.HowToInvestInShares.co.uk - the subject of this video is: What Is A Stock Exchange? 0:26 Stock Exchange vs Stock Market 1:00 Why Have A Stock Exchange? 2:54 Starbucks... But Not As We Know It 3:05 London Stock Exchange 3:25 New York Stock Exchange 3:48 NASDAQ & Electronic Trading 5:47 Summary 6:09 More information and FREE Guide at http://www.HowToInvestInShares.co.uk Stock exchange and stock market are very similar terms, very similar concepts, but there is a slight difference. A stock exchange is a mechanism or a system or method for swapping or doing the act of buying and selling our stocks and shares in the market. Stock exchanges were born many years ago and brought about by traders who were shipping their goods overseas, wanting to get some security or insurance for the trade. In those very early days, shipping was a very dangerous business, a very risky business. Putting your goods on a boat and then letting it set sail, it could be weeks or months until it got over to the other side of the world and the trader therefore wanted some sort of method of making sure they didn't lose all their stock. So they would insure their stock. For an insurer, that is a lot of money in one big sum so they would break that sum up into small pieces and issue those as smaller pieces, or bonds (an IOUs) to investors. So basically, this was a mechanism of getting a number of investors to put up money for a shipment. It was many years later when a company wanted to do the same thing and get investors on board. So it broke its company up into shares. That's how bonds and shares are slightly different. It was back in 1760 when the first stock exchange was formed in the city of London in the UK. In those days, these bonds for all these shipping trips and their transacting was typically done in a number of coffee houses in the city of London, would you believe? For shares, the focus was a particular coffee house known as Jonathon's Coffee House. But it wasn't until 1773 when the place was renamed as the London Stock Exchange and at the time it was the first example of a stock exchange in the world set up to trade company shares. Although the London Stock Exchange is the first ever stock exchange in the world and therefore it is the oldest, it is no longer the biggest. The biggest is the New York Stock Exchange formed at 11 Wall Street in New York in 1792. Stock exchanges in those days were physical markets. So in order to trade you had to be physically at the market. However, with the advent of computers in the 20th century, nowadays it is computers that do the physical trading and exchanging. There is no need for people to be physically on the trading floor any more like they used to be in the early days. In fact it was the NASDAQ in 1971 that was formed as the first ever fully computerised stock exchange. So the NASDAQ didn't need a location like the London Stock Exchange or the New York Stock Exchange. The NASDAQ, right from its inception, was an electronic only trading platform. Indeed, in order to keep up with the NASDAQ, all these other stock exchanges I've mentioned already and many others in other countries around the world have needed to computerise. The advantage of an electronic exchange, of course, over a physical stock exchange is that the dealers, the brokers, the market makers - the people who trade the shares in the market don't physically need to be at a given site. They can trade electronically and they can be remote from the physical place where it used to take place. The other major advantage as an investor is that it is all done electronically and therefore it is a lot slicker, a lot quicker. It is instant, pretty much instant, nowadays and you can see this information on-line and hence why there has been a massive growth in on-line brokers for buying and selling shares. What is The NYSE (New York Stock Exchange) ?

01:48
Welcome to the Investors Trading Academy talking glossary of financial terms and events. Our word of the day is the “NYSE” The New York Stock Exchange, often referred to as NYSE and "The Big Board," is the largest stock exchange by market capitalization in the world. Home to more than 2,800 companies with a combined value of more than $15 trillion, the NYSE relies on face-to-face trades, rather than electronic trades. The NYSE began in 1792, when 24 stockbrokers gathered under a buttonwood tree on Wall Street to sign an agreement that established the rules for buying and selling bonds and shares of companies. This agreement, or the Buttonwood Agreement, was named after the tree. The NYSE is the oldest and largest stock exchange in the U.S., located on Wall Street in New York City. The NYSE is responsible for setting policy, supervising member activities, listing securities, overseeing the transfer of member seats, and evaluating applicants. Unlike some of the newer exchanges, the NYSE still uses a large trading floor in order to conduct its transactions. It is here that the representatives of buyers and sellers, professionals known as brokers, meet and shout out prices at one another in order to strike a deal. This is called the open outcry system and it usually produces fair market pricing. In order to facilitate the exchange of stocks, the NYSE employs individuals called specialists who are assigned to manage the buying and selling of specific stocks and to buy those stocks when no one else will. The Stock Market Crash of 1987 | Cancel Crash

43:19
The fragile state of today’s world financial markets is not a new phenomenon. It wasn’t long ago that the world braced itself for another Great Depression. It was the defining moment of the 1980's. The New York Stock Exchange, the epicenter of the world financial markets and backbone of American capitalism, was under siege. On October 19th, 1987, the Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged 508 points, the largest single day drop in the history of the stock market. But it was on Tuesday, October 20th that the world's financial markets came within 5 minutes of total disintegration. How was it averted? Was it a miracle? Manipulation? Or a lucky trade? Cancel Crash depicts the dramatic events that saved the world from financial anarchy and presents for the first time what actually happened on Terrible Tuesday. Framed between the opening bell on Friday, October 16h to the closing bell of Terrible Tuesday, the story unfolds as the perilous clock ticks, revealing those who prevented a global Depression and saved our financial markets. ======== tastytrade.com ======== Finally a financial network for traders, built by traders. How the Stock Market Worked: "The Big Board" 1958 New York Stock Exchange

Originally a public domain film from the Library of Congress Prelinger Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and one-pass brightness-contrast-color correction & mild video noise reduction applied. The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_Stock_Exchange Wikipedia license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) is a stock exchange located at 11 Wall Street in Lower Manhattan, New York City, USA. It is by far the world's largest stock exchange by market capitalization of its listed companies at US$13.39 trillion as of Dec 2010. Average daily trading value was approximately US$153 billion in 2008. The NYSE is operated by NYSE Euronext (NYSE: NYX), which was formed by the NYSE's 2007 merger with the fully electronic stock exchange Euronext. The NYSE trading floor is located at 11 Wall Street and is composed of four rooms used for the facilitation of trading. A fifth trading room, located at 30 Broad Street, was closed in February 2007. The main building, located at 18 Broad Street, between the corners of Wall Street and Exchange Place, was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1978, as was the 11 Wall Street building. The origin of the NYSE can be traced to May 17, 1792, when the Buttonwood Agreement was signed by 24 stock brokers outside of 68 Wall Street in New York under a buttonwood tree on Wall Street. On March 8, 1817, the organization drafted a constitution and renamed itself the "New York Stock & Exchange Board." Anthony Stockholm was elected the Exchange's first president. The first central location of the Exchange was a room, rented in 1792 for $200 a month, located at 40 Wall Street. After that location was destroyed in the Great Fire of New York in 1835, the Exchange moved to a temporary headquarters. In 1863, the New York Stock & Exchange Board changed to its current name, the New York Stock Exchange. In 1865, the Exchange moved to 10--12 Broad Street. The New York Stock Exchange was closed for ten days starting September 20, 1873, because of the Panic of 1873. The volume of stocks traded increased sixfold in the years between 1896 and 1901, and a larger space was required to conduct business in the expanding marketplace. Eight New York City architects were invited to participate in a design competition for a new building; ultimately, the Exchange selected the neoclassic design submitted by architect George B. Post. Demolition of the Exchange building at 10 Broad Street, and adjacent buildings, started on May 10, 1901. The new building, located at 18 Broad Street, cost $4 million and opened on April 22, 1903. The trading floor, at 109 × 140 feet (33 × 42.5 m), was one of the largest volumes of space in the city at the time, and had a skylight set into a 72-foot (22 m)-high ceiling. The main façade of the building features six tall columns with Corinthian capitals, topped by a marble pediment containing high-relief sculptures by John Quincy Adams Ward with the collaboration of Paul Wayland Bartlett, carved by the Piccirilli Brothers, representing Integrity Protecting the Works of Man. The building was listed as a National Historic Landmark and added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 2, 1978...

How Stock Exchanges Work: How to Incoporate - Buying and Selling Stocks (1952)

15:36
The Stock Exchange provide companies with the facility to raise capital for expansion through selling shares to the investing public. Besides the borrowing capacity provided to an individual or firm by the banking system, in the form of credit or a loan, there are four common forms of capital raising used by companies and entrepreneurs. Most of these available options, might be achieved, directly or indirectly, involving a stock exchange. Capital intensive companies, particularly high tech companies, always need to raise high volumes of capital in their early stages. For this reason, the public market provided by the stock exchanges has been one of the most important funding sources for many capital intensive startups. After the 1990s and early-2000s hi-tech listed companies' boom and bust in the world's major stock exchanges, it has been much more demanding for the high-tech entrepreneur to take his/her company public, unless either the company already has products in the market and is generating sales and earnings, or the company has completed advanced promising clinical trials, earned potentially profitable patents or conducted market research which demonstrated very positive outcomes. This is quite different from the situation of the 1990s to early-2000s period, when a number of companies (particularly Internet boom and biotechnology companies) went public in the most prominent stock exchanges around the world, in the total absence of sales, earnings and any well-documented promising outcome. Anyway, every year a number of companies, including unknown highly speculative and financially unpredictable hi-tech startups, are listed for the first time in all the major stock exchanges -- there are even specialized entry markets for these kind of companies or stock indexes tracking their performance (examples include the Alternext, CAC Small, SDAX, TecDAX, or most of the third market companies). A number of companies have also raised significant amounts of capital through R&D limited partnerships. Tax law changes that were enacted in 1987 in the United States changed the tax deductibility of investments in R&D limited partnerships. In order for a partnership to be of interest to investors today, the cash on cash return must be high enough to entice investors. As a result, R&D limited partnerships are not a viable means of raising money for most companies, specially hi-tech startups. A third usual source of capital for startup companies has been venture capital. This source remains largely available today, but the maximum statistical amount that the venture company firms in aggregate will invest in any one company is not limitless (it was approximately $15 million in 2001 for a biotechnology company). At those level, venture capital firms typically become tapped-out because the financial risk to any one partnership becomes too great. A fourth alternative source of cash for a private company is a corporate partner, usually an established multinational company, which provides capital for the smaller company in return for marketing rights, patent rights, or equity. Corporate partnerships have been used successfully in a large number of cases. When people draw their savings and invest in shares (through an IPO or the issuance of new company shares of an already listed company), it usually leads to rational allocation of resources because funds, which could have been consumed, or kept in idle deposits with banks, are mobilized and redirected to help companies' management boards finance their organizations. This may promote business activity with benefits for several economic sectors such as agriculture, commerce and industry, resulting in stronger economic growth and higher productivity levels of firms. Sometimes it is very difficult for the stock investor to determine whether or not the allocation of those funds is in good faith and will be able to generate long-term company growth, without examination of a company's internal auditing. Companies view acquisitions as an opportunity to expand product lines, increase distribution channels, hedge against volatility, increase its market share, or acquire other necessary business assets. A takeover bid or a merger agreement through the stock market is one of the simplest and most common ways for a company to grow by acquisition or fusion. Both casual and professional stock investors, as large as institutional investors or as small as an ordinary middle-class family, through dividends and stock price increases that may result in capital gains, share in the wealth of profitable businesses. Unprofitable and troubled businesses may result in capital losses for shareholders. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stock_exchange

There are ongoing speculations by the financial strategists that the stock market crash can begin as early as 2019. Therefore, the Federal Reserve will have to raise the interest rates to control the expected inflation. Could this be the end of the bull market? Some financial experts argue that the stock market has improved in performance, but they are no insensitive of the impending economic threat. According to a survey conducted by Bank of America on money managers, only 18% of them believe that the stock performance has improved. Historically, the stock market has been frothy but a bull performance has been sustained for the last 9 years. US markets tumble after major global shakeup Aug 25, 2015 Stomach churning, gut wrenching, panicked were the sentiments felt while selling took place Monday on the U.S. stock exchanges as the U.S. followed global markets in a collective tumble. The trigger was China's stock market crash on Monday, as investors fretted over a slowdown in the world's second-largest economy. ***[Video Credit: China Central Television] [Tags: News, economy, USA, US stock exchange, stock market, Big Board, New York Stock Exchange, NYSE, Wall Street, Lower Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States, World Federation of Exchanges, Financial markets, #BigBoard, #NewYork #StockExchange, #NYSE, #WallStreet, Lower #Manhattan, #NewYorkCity, #NY, #UnitedStates, #WorldFederationofExchanges, #Financial #markets, Politics, #Breaking, #News, #Politics, #WorldNews]

Warren Buffett - How Anyone can Invest and Become Rich

05:40
Website: https://primedlifestyle.com/ Instagram: Primed Berkshire Hathaway Annual report: http://www.berkshirehathaway.com/letters/2013ltr.pdf Warren Buffett's favorite book -The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham on Amazon: http://amzn.to/2AlojQc Tony Robbins Money Master the Game on Amazon: http://amzn.to/2zyz84n Audible 30 day free trail: https://goo.gl/x64Vb9 Warren Buffett - One of the most successful investor of all times with an estimated net worth of over 80 billion dollars to this date has shared his methods for investing. Having bought his first stock at 11 years of age and having $53,000 dollars to his name at 17, he sure knows a thing or two about this market. And even though he spent a lifetime developing his skills, he’s has shared some very straightforward advice about investing that anyone can take advantage of. Warren Buffett’s first rule is to simply think long term over short term. He might be going overboard with this concept and he is truly embracing it around his entire life. He still lives in the same house he bought in 1958 and is also working at the very same desk since 50 years back and doesn’t use a computer but traditional pen and paper. He’s been quoted saying he doesn’t throw anything away until he’s had it for at least 20-25 years. So thinking long term is natural for him and the ability to resist selling has proved to be very successful for him. So having that said the reason why he’s holding on to what he buys is because he does his homework and does so very well. He’s stated many times that he spends 80 % of his day reading and catching up with the latest news and what companies to invest in. He thinks about life and investing as learning as much as he can and reads between 600-1,000 pages every single day. However not many people have the time or money to read for 8 hours a day and invest a few billions in the biggest companies like Warren Buffet, and it’s not a strategy that anyone can apply and find success with. And I wanted to make a video explaining how absolutely anyone can invest and become rich without taking time to read and grasp what to invest in which is why I’m super excited to share this with you. So when reading the Berkshire Hathaway Annual report of 2013, one of the most interesting paragraphs I found was on page 20 where he gave a very simple and straightforward advice about investing. He says “My money is where my mouth is: What I advise here is essentially identical to certain instructions I’ve laid out in my will. So in his will he’s demanded that future of his family's money money should be invested such as this: Put 10% of the cash in short-term government bonds and 90% in a very low-cost S&P 500 index fund.” And he finishes it off by stating “I believe the trust’s long-term results from this policy will be superior to those attained by most investors” I told you it was straight forward. Don’t try to outplay the market but instead play with it. No man or machine can predict the ups and downs of the market, well except for Warren Buffett, so it would be foolish to try to beat it when you can simply join it. The very same formula was also mentioned in Tony Robbins book money master the game and index funds really seems to be the future of investments because the market will always rise in long term, and that’s essentially what you invest in - the market. The S&P 500 contains all the 500 largest companies that trade on NYSE and Nasdaq. Instead of picking stocks individually, you can now own a piece of all of the biggest companies such as Apple, Microsoft and Google. And investing in an index fund is very secure since a single company might go bankrupt, however the market will not. And you don’t have to stick to only the U.S market but could invest in the european and asian markets that’s also doing very well and you can even invest in global index funds to own a part of the biggest companies in the world. And for the other 10 %, the short-term government bonds is a very low risk low cost alternative that is also offered by vanguard amongst others. Short-term bonds are very attractive to investors because of they’re very stable and consistently rising, however the return tends to be smaller. And I’ll finish it off through Warren Buffett’s words: “The goal of the non-professional should not be to pick winners but should rather be to own a cross-section of businesses that in aggregate are bound to do well.” Music: Life of Riley by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1400054 Artist: http://incompetech.com/

The rise of Bombay Stock Exchange in late 90's

03:05
Every morning at the Bombay Stock Exchange brokers come and pray before this idol of Lord Ganesh before they start trading on the floor. The prayers may be chanted in different languages but all of them carry the same message a plea for unbounded profits. For the past one week the prayers of the brokers seem to have been answered never before in the 150 year of history the Bombay Stock Exchange as the market witnessed trading as hectic as today never before had the bulls charge so ferociously and never before has the BSE sensitive index reflected a truer picture of India's economy. the current boom in the stock market with the sensex continuing to maintain it's position over the 4600 mark is in stark contrast to the scam tainted boom of 1992-93. The earlier boom was whimsical and not based on strong fundamentals. SOUNDBITE: (English) Anais Faraj, Equity Strategist, Nomura International: "Well London has opened very strongly and is continuing to trade firmly upwards. We've had some weaker than expected data on the retail sales front, and the market just ignored it. I think the view right now is that fundamentals do not matter at this stage. This is very much a traders' market, and sentiment is the key driver." Q: How seriously will the AOL Time Warner news impact on the markets? "For me personally, AOL is a reminder that there's still two weeks to go before the August 15 deadline (in the US) for corporate governance issues to be declared. If you do have some concerns about the accounting standards in your company, you should come out by then and state that you have these reservations. The AOL story is that you have a very big company, that's a key part of the US stock market, and it's being investigated by the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission), and it's a reminder that all is not well out there. I suspect this stock market rally will be very short lived." Paris, July 25, 2002 7. Various interior of brokerage firm Richelieu Finance with brokers working at computer terminals 8. SOUNDBITE: (English) Nathalie Pelras, Portfolio manager, Richelieu Finances: "The French market is going up as the American market did yesterday. The French stocks have gone up by more than five per cent so it's a big rise after three days of going down consecutively. I think perhaps what we saw yesterday was the end of the decline of the market. Today, all the stocks which were going down are going up by more than 10 per cent. So everybody is running after the stocks. We don't know whether it's going to last or not." - 11. Cutaway Pelras with trader 12. Cutaway of traders 13. SOUNDBITE: (English) Nathalie Pelras, Portfolio manager, Richelieu Finances: "One might say today that the market is not very expensive even if the 2002-2003 outlook is not exceptional. If people don't invest in the market at the level it's at today - while it's rising by five per cent - they will never invest. They might be wrong in the short-term but one must remember that investing in shares is for the long-term. And for the long-term, an investment today really is a worthwhile starting-point." 14. Various of trading room STORYLINE: Reacting to a big rally on Wall Street, stock markets rose around the world on Thursday, especially in England and France, but many later lost ground as investors remained jumpy. In London, the Financial Times-Stock Exchange 100-Share Index was 141.8 points, or 3.75 percent, higher at 3,918.9 in morning trading. The Paris CAC 40 also made a positive start, rising 137.93 points, or 4.56 percent, to 3,161.62. Some traders remained wary of the turbulence in US markets and expected Wall Street to head south when trading reopened later on Thursday. The rally followed Wednesday night's sharp gains on Wall Street. Equity Strategist of Nomura International in London, Anais Faraj said the rally was unlikely to last, particularly in view of the latest accounting scandal to hit to the United States - this time involving media giant AOL Time Warner. Speaking in Paris, Portfolio manager, of Richelieu Finances, Nathalie Pelras said that although Thursday's market was up it could not be predicted whether the rise would continue.
