Current HRD Challenges are important to consider too. Online learning, teaching oneself, the impact of social media. These are all contemporary issues for workplaces, managers, supervisors, Human Resource Development (HRD) and Human Resources (HR) Managers. Even the changing of a logo can be disruptive to people, as it challenges the way we think about ourselves, and can have unintended consequences. However, the skill of change management can be applied to these current HRD challenges in the same way as they are to other current issues. In a sense HRD and HR can take charge of the change process, taking the broad view that is so important to the management of change. Some examples of current issues are: 'millennials' in the workplace, MOOC's, the gamification of training, workforce planning for aging populations. An HRD manager's own career can be challenged by these changes. A social media presence, an online identity, maintaining integrity and 'Reputational Capital' are all becoming more prominent. After all, HRD is changing too. Human Resources is the broad area under which HRD is often considered, along with Workplace Training, Workplace Learning, Change Management, HR Advice and so on. Recognition of change management as an asset has changed the way people consider Human Resources Development and the management of workplaces in general.

Prof. Roddrick Colvin's presentation on ancient and contemporary applications of human resource management theory. Scholars disagree on whether or not human resource management differs between the private and the public sectors, but it is clear that some of the essential principles of the field are remarkably constant. Using the Egyptian pyramids, the Great Wall of China, and the international space station as examples, Prof. Colvin explains how and why human resource management at its core has remained the same for 4,000 years. Roddrick Colvin is an Associate Professor of Public Administration at John Jay College of Criminal Justice at the City University of New York (CUNY). He has published numerous articles on employment policy, minority rights, hate crimes, and international human rights policies in peer-reviewed journals, including the International Journal of Public Administration and the Journal of Public Management and Social Policy. At CUNY, Prof. Colvin currently teaches courses in public administration, human resource management, and policy analysis. He has also served on the board of the New York State Political Science Association and is a member of the American Political Science Association. Prof. Colvin holds an MPA in Public Administration from Seattle University and a PhD in Public Administration from the State University of New York in Albany. Pr. Colvin is in Tbilisi as a part of the EWMI G-PAC Master's in Public Administration (MPA) program, which is established in cooperation with the Ilia State University and the Columbia University. EWMI G-PAC is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented by East-West Management Institute (EWMI).
