Once again its election time for Mayor of Bloomington, IL. Our current Mayor promised change, four years later, downtown Bloomington pretty much looks like it did four years ago. There are a few more store fronts filled, but for how long? Those of us familiar with the downtown for the past twenty years, have seen this pattern of fill the store fronts only to watch them empty for same basic reasons the downtown has failed to develop, too many bars, too much being spent on a handful of bars, and too much trash, property damage, public urination, lost property values, city parking gamed for the bars.
Those that have invested in the downtown, have seen their property damaged, vandalized, only to be told, “You knew it was a bar area before you opened your business”. Well, with that kind of attitude prevailing, how will the downtown ever really develop to its full potential, and stop being a revolving door of businesses come and go so quickly.
This also applies to the other party candidate running for Mayor, she has been on City Council for over four years, and she has not even bothered to look at the damage, vandalism, public urination and scale it occurs, that downtown investors have had to endure for past twenty years.
So between no changes and not even to bother to look at the problems, how do Bloomington taxpayers ever expect the downtown to develop? Neither candidate will change anything regarding the bars, it will be business as usual and downtown will fail to develop, for another four years. Just more money spent on protecting a handful of downtown bars. We have had 12 years this no bar left behind policies and subsidies of the downtown bars, and look how downtown Bloomington has failed to develop compared to Uptown Normal. And who is to blame, the very people who were elected to develop the downtown and represent Bloomington taxpayers. There is no excuse for why downtown Bloomington is run like it is, except to protect the downtown bars, at the expense of everyone else
