Modern Dance Performance: Music by Damon Ferrante / Choreography by Kate St. Amand: "Toward Home"

03:58
"Toward Home: An Evening-Length Modern Dance Work": Third Movement excerpt. http://www.steeplechasearts.com/ and www.syrendance.org/ Music: Damon Ferrante Choreography: Kate St. Amand. SYREN Modern Dance performed the work at the Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York City. Damon Ferrante is a Simkins Award-wining composer, guitarist, and music writer. He has had performances throughout the US and Europe, most notably, Carnegie Hall, Symphony Space, and Guild Hall. Over the next year, he will be on tour in the US, Spain, France, Italy, Greece, and Asia for performances of his music. In 2011, he wrote the film scores for Gabriela Jaime's Flor (Spain), Sonya Zolotaryovais's White Winter (Japan), and is working on the scores for several new films. Ferrante was appointed composer-in-residence for Montauk, New York from 2006 to 2010 (funded by New York State Council for the Arts). His successful series brought world-famous composers, such as Mark Adamo, David Del Tredici, Ricky Ian Gordon, and Robert Aldridge, to Montauk for performances and talks on their operas and music. He has been the subject of feature articles in the Baltimore Sun, Baltimore City Paper, The East Hampton Star, and Johns Hopkins Magazine, and has appeared several times on National Public Radio. Ferrante has taught on the music faculties at Seton Hall University and Montclair State University. His scores and books are available on Amazon.com and his recordings are available on iTunes. Tim Smith of the Baltimore Sun calls Ferrante's music "focused and colorful...with an unexpected, decidedly poetic touch." Geoffrey Himes of Baltimore City Paper states, "If the tune has the elegance of traditional opera, the harmonization is very modern as the vocal lines climb and descend the melodic staircases that Ferrante has constructed for them." Anne Midgette, writing in the New York Times, cited Ferrante's opera Jefferson and Poe as one the three operas to see in New York in early December. Mary MacCauley of the Baltimore Sun describes his music as "ebullient and full of shifts of direction." Betsy Murphy of the Ridgewood News calls him "a star on the rise." SYREN is a company of dancers that range greatly in style, background, and home town. SYREN’s productions are always enhanced by designers that are committed to the integrity and momentum of the organization. CHILDHOOD: THEN VS NOW

14 of the most vivid differences and created illustrations showing nostalgia and love of childhood. In the end, you’ll find a surprise — a memory that unites both generations. "We didn’t have this when we were kids!" You hear such sighs from those who belong to the generation that grew up in the ’90s more and more often. And it’s true! If you look at how modern children live, you can find many differences. We used to have different toys, different attitude to life, different concerns and problems and so many other differences in little things that mean a lot. 20 rules all women in the Gypsy culture must obey. Subscribe: https://goo.gl/Hnoaw3 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It’s fascinating to discover the strict rules that women in gypsy communities have to follow. Shows like “My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding” and “Gypsy Kids” shed light on gypsy culture and women’s roles within the community. And many of these rules make it look like feminism never happened. From traditions dating back to the old days of Romani gypsies to modern gypsy rules, there are many shocking rules. Stars from TV series like “My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding” and its spin-off “Gypsy Sisters”, such as Nettie Stanley, exemplify what life is like for gypsy women. Mellie Stanley has spoken about the attitude towards domestic abuse. They also show the ironies implicit in some rules, like how you’re expected to dress provocatively yet save yourself for marriage. Watch our TheTalko video to discover 20 strict rules women must follow in gypsy culture, and tell us in comments which one you think is the most shocking of all. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our Social Media: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheTalko Twitter: https://twitter.com/thetalko Instagram: https://instagram.com/the_talko ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For more videos and articles visit: http://www.thetalko.com/

Contemporary Act by "Dakini Dance-Olga Merekina" @ RGC Art One Nation Gala Event, 23rd October 2016

05:01
Olga Merekina is a Russian artist, choreographer, and educator, based in China. Although her body experience includes different forms and practices, such as classical ballet, modern dance, flamenco, and capoeira, her recent performing artworks as well as teaching approach are focused on contemporary dance, physical theater, and improvisation. Body is not only a medium of Olga’s artistic expression but also a main area of her academic research interest. Dakini dance studio is founded by Olga Merekina in 2013 in Shanghai, China. The studio provides contemporary dance training and improvisation classes, as well as choreographs performances. Through dance we make an attempt not only to educate our bodies but also to educate our mind, learn how to communicate, and express yourself. ABOUT THE ACT Walking Through Desert ‘Walking Through Desert’ is not merely a recall of personal experience of surviving in human unfriendly environment. The performance is an attempt to recognize and even embody a journey of human civilizations through time and space, struggling to leave any trace of existence. For centuries, Taklamakan desert was the most hazardous part of the Silk road, an ancient route of commercial and cultural exchange between East and West. Being able to travel just from one oasis to another, caravans may have spent weeks and months waiting for favorable weather. However, there was always a risk to get buried before reaching a destination. Nevertheless, being brutal with human beings, the desert became a careful guardian of cultural artifacts. Carefully preserving books, artworks, and articles of everyday utility from decay, Taklamakan desert enables those cultures vanished from the historical memory to send a message through the centuries. Human history as collective memory of survivors is imperfect. And we may never know if the remembered one is only worth retaining.

Irish Step Dancing with Darrah Carr | Irish Step Dancing

01:45
Watch more How to Do Irish Step Dancing videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/509202-Irish-Step-Dancing-with-Darrah-Carr-Irish-Step-Dancing Hi. My name is Darrah Carr. I'm the Music Director of Dara Carr Dance, a professional Irish Dance company based in New York City. For the last 15 years I've developed a style of dance that I've coined ModERIN. ModERIN is a compound word referencing modern, as in dance, and Erin, an Irish-American reference to Ireland. This compound, or fused, word encapsulates my choreographic interests in drawing from the tradition of Irish dance and the tradition of modern dance to create a blended style of contemporary dance choreography. From Irish dance I utilize music cycles, rhythmic footwork and spacial patterning. From modern dance I utilize floor work, level changes and partnering. Together this creates a marriage of Irish dance structure and modern dance freedom that I've coined ModERIN. Recent performance highlights from my company include a spot on NBC's The Today Show, a performance at Carnegie Hall with the New York Pops and our annual season at the Irish Arts Center. In 2011 we were nominated for a Bessie Award for our work with guest choreographer Sean Curran. You can find us performing works by myself and Sean Curran at the Irish Art Center every November. You can also take classes in ModERIN style at the Irish Art Center. Outside of Darrah Carr dance I teach in both the Dance and Irish Studies programs at Hofstra University and contribute a variety of articles on the history of dance to a number of different dance publications. Please visit our website DarrahCarrDance.com for more information about our work.

A contemporaneous dance which depicts the problems faced by youngsters who live on the streets, from the moment they wake up to the time they go to time. Morris dancing Simon and Garfunkel Scarborough Fair Folk

04:18
English Morris dancing in Brighton England performed by cuckoos nest ladies morris Morris dance Cotswold morris with handkerchiefsA morris dance is a form of English folk dance usually accompanied by music. It is based on rhythmic stepping and the execution of choreographed figures by a group of dancers. Implements such as sticks, swords, and handkerchiefs may also be wielded by the dancers. In a small number of dances for one or two men, steps are performed near and across a pair of clay tobacco pipes laid across each other on the floor. There are claimed to be English records mentioning the morris dance dating back to 1448, but these are open to dispute. There is no mention of "morris" dancing earlier than the late 15th century, although early records such as Bishops' "Visitation Articles" mention sword dancing, guising and other dancing activities as well as mumming plays. Furthermore, the earliest records invariably mention "Morys" in a court setting, and both men and women are mentioned as dancing, and a little later in the Lord Mayors' Processions in London. It is only later that it begins to be mentioned as something performed in the parishes. There is certainly no evidence whatsoever that it is in any way a pre-Christian ritual, as is often claimed. While there is still some dispute the origin of the term "morris", the most widely accepted theory is that the term was "moorish dance," "morisques" (in France), "moriskentanz" (in Germany), "moreška" (in Croatia), and "moresco" or "morisca" (in Italy and Spain), which eventually became "morris dance". Dances with similar names and some similar features are mentioned in Renaissance documents in France, Italy, Germany, Croatia, and Spain, throughout, in fact Catholic Europe. This is hardly surprising; by 1492 Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castille succeeded in driving the Moors out of Spain and unifying the country. In celebration of this a pageant known as a "Moresca" was devised and performed. This can still be seen performed in places such as Ainsa, Aragon. Incorporated into this pageant was the local dance - the Paloteao. This too can still be seen performed in the villages of Aragon. The similarity to what became known as the English "morris" is undoubted. Early court records state that the "Moresque" was performed at court in her honour, including the dance - the "moresque" or "morisce" or "morys" dance. In the modern day, it is commonly thought of as a uniquely English activity, although there are around 150 morris sides (or teams) in the United States. British expatriates form a larger part of the morris tradition in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and Hong Kong, and there are isolated groups in other countries, for example that in Utrecht, Netherlands, and Alsace, France. Cary Ballet

Ballet Ballet /ˈbæleɪ/ (French: [balɛ]) is a type of performance dance that originated in the Italian Renaissance courts of the 15th century and later developed into a concert dance form in France and Russia. It has since become a widespread, highly technical form of dance with its own vocabulary based on French terminology. It has been globally influential and has defined the foundational techniques used in many other dance genres. Becoming a ballet dancer requires years of training. Ballet has been taught in various schools around the world, which have historically incorporated their own cultures to evolve the art. Ballet may also refer to a ballet dance work, which consists of the choreography and music for a ballet production. A well-known example of this is The Nutcracker, a two-act ballet that was originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov with a music score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Ballets are choreographed and performed by trained artists. Traditional classical ballets usually are performed with classical music accompaniment and use elaborate costumes and staging, whereas modern ballets, such as the neoclassical works of American choreographer George Balanchine, often are performed in simple costumes (e.g., leotards and tights) and without the use of elaborate sets or scenery. Etymology Pointe ballet shoes Ballet is a French word which had its origin in Italian balletto, a diminutive of ballo (dance) which comes from Latin ballo, ballare, meaning "to dance", which in turn comes from the Greek "βαλλίζω" (ballizo), "to dance, to jump about". The word came into English usage from the French around 1630. History Main articles: History of ballet and Timeline of ballet Anna Pavlova in Giselle, wearing a romantic tutu Ballet originated in the Italian Renaissance courts of the 15th and 16th centuries before being spread from Italy to France by an Italian aristocrat, Catherine de' Medici, who became Queen of France. In France, ballet developed even further under her aristocratic influence. The dancers in these early court ballets were mostly noble amateurs. Ballets in this period were lengthy and elaborate and often served a political purpose. Ornamented costumes were meant to impress viewers and restricted performers' freedom of movement. The ballets were performed in large chambers with viewers on three sides. The implementation of the proscenium arch from 1618 on distanced performers from audience members, who could then better view and appreciate the technical feats of the professional dancers in the productions. French court ballet reached its height under the reign of King Louis XIV. Known as the Sun King, Louis symbolized the brilliance of France. In 1661 Louis founded the Académie Royale de Danse (Royal Dance Academy) to establish standards and certify dance instructors. In 1672, Louis XIV made Jean-Baptiste Lully the director of the Académie Royale de Musique (Paris Opera) from which the first professional ballet company, the Paris Opera Ballet, arose. Lully is considered the most important composer of music for ballets de cour and instrumental to the development of the form. Ballet went into decline in France after 1830, though it continued to develop in Denmark, Italy, and Russia. The arrival in Europe on the eve of First World War of the Ballets Russes of Sergei Diaghilev, revived interest in the ballet and started the modern era. The Russian choreographer Michel Fokine challenged tradition and called for reforms that reinvigorated ballet as an art form. In the 20th century, ballet had a strong influence on other dance genres, and subgenres of ballet have also evolved. In the United States, choreographer George Balanchine developed what is now known as neoclassical ballet. Other developments include contemporary ballet and post-structural ballet. Also in the twentieth century, ballet took a turn dividing it[clarification needed] from classical ballet to the introduction of modern dance, leading to modernist movements[clarification needed] in several countries. Famous dancers of the 20th century include Rudolf Nureyev, Margot Fonteyn, Rosella Hightower, Maria Tall Chief, Erik Bruhn, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Suzanne Farrell, Gelsey Kirkland, Natalia Makarova, and Arthur Mitchell. Maiden Tower written by Afrasiyab Badalbeyli is the first ballet in the Muslim East. Styles Stylistic variations have emerged and evolved since the Italian Renaissance. Early, classical variations are primarily associated with geographic origin. Examples of this are Russian ballet, French ballet, and Italian ballet. Later variations, such as contemporary ballet and neoclassical ballet, incorporate both classical ballet and non-traditional technique and movement. Source : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballet

Scientists Finally Discovered the Truth About Easter Island

10:09
We all know that the easter island heads have bodies – that’s not a mystery at all. But how did the easter island population build hundreds of statues? Scientists have recently solved this mystery and discovered where these people disappeared to and why. For many decades, people's minds have been occupied with the mystery of Easter Island. A remote piece of volcanic soil, far away in the Pacific Ocean... But our planet hosts thousands of such lonely islands, what is so particular about this one? The mystery is concealed not in the island itself but giant stone statues covering it. Who created the world-famous huge stone heads? Did they serve any specific purpose? Where did their creators arrive from and where did they disappear? Well, it seems the answer is finally just around the corner! TIMESTAMPS What do we know about Easter Island? 1:05 Amazing facts about Easter Island 2:18 How have the statues been moved around the island? 5:25 How could create Easter Island monuments? 7:24 What happened to people on Easter Island? 8:09 SUMMARY - Where is Easter Island located? Rapa Nui (which is the name given to Easter Island by its first inhabitants) is the territory of Chile and is situated in the southern Pacific Ocean. And it is so, so far that you can easily consider it one of the most distant places on the world's map. It lies 1,200 miles away from Pitcairn, which is its closest neighbor. - What's the main secret of the statues? Most statues (834 out of 887) were carved from the material called tuff which is, in fact, compressed volcanic ash. Curiously, all the statues except one group face inland. It means their backs are turned to the ocean. Perhaps the reason for that was the belief that the statues were the protectors of the villagers that's why they overlooked the settlement. The only statues not fitting into this pattern can be found at Ahu Akivi, a sacred place for the people of Rapa Nui. - Theories about how the statues had been moved. One of the most popular ones among the lovers of mysteries was the belief that the statues had been created and moved by aliens. But even if you like this theory, we are sorry to debunk it. The stone the statues were built from originates from the island itself. The birthplace of most of the material was an extinct volcano situated in the north-east of Easter Island and not another planet. - A new study about the island. A new study has been conducted recently to specify the maximum number of the inhabitants in the heyday of the island's civilization. The results arrived, and they were quite unexpected. It turned out that as many as 17 and a half thousand people could comfortably live on the island. At least 19 percent of the land could be covered with the fields of sweet potatoes that used to be the main source of food for the population. What is more, the islanders consumed quite a lot of seafood and fish. - Why did people on Easter Island disappear? At first, it was believed that the reason for such a decrease of the population was an ecocide. The natives cut out large forests and palm trees making spare room for moving the statues around as well as agriculture. They thought the trees were going to grow back fast enough. It was a misleading concept. The deterioration of the environment resulted in hunger. And this, in turn, led to wars and cannibalism. Nowadays, however, such a theory has been proven wrong. First of all, Rapa Nui inhabitants seemed to be very talented agricultural engineers. They deliberately fertilized the fields with the volcanic rock. In fact, another research has shown that people had been living on the island for many centuries. And the population only started to decrease when Europeans began visiting. SUNMI’s ‘Heroine’ is a single title track released in five months after her solo comeback song ‘Gashina’, which was released in three years after disbanding and caused a ‘SUNMI’ syndrome last night, as a prequel of ‘Gashina’. The main theme of ‘Heroine’ is ‘a flower locked in ice’, describing the earlier story of ‘Gashina’ in which the woman had to accept the sad breakup by saying ‘Why do you leave behind pretty me?’ to herself. This track delicately describes the woman’s frozen heart with SUNMI’s sensibility, who gets hurt by the lopsided relationship with the person she loves but tries to understand the person.   #SUNMI#선미#Heroine#주인공#Newrelease#MV#1theK#원더케이 ▶1theK FB : http://www.facebook.com/1theK ▶1theK TW : https://twitter.com/1theK ▶1theK Kakao : https://goo.gl/otRpZc

Dance Magazine Review - The April 2017 Choreography Issue! with Ballerina Badass

07:51
Haaaaaayyyy Dancers and Dance Fans! This month’s Dance Magazine is chock full of great content, and it’s well-worth grabbing your own copy! Of course, by “grabbing your own copy” I mean going online and getting the digital version, or going old school like I did and ordering a subscription via DanceMagazine.com or Amazon.com and waiting 2+months for your first copy to arrive. Ugh. Anyway, I’m sharing highlights from this April Choreography issue, but there are a whole bunch more articles in there that I don’t mention, so be sure to check out Dance Magazine’s Twitter feed for regular updates – they offer a cornucopia of content every day. Do you read Dance Magazine? Have a favorite article or writer? Let me know in the comment box below! Also: what’s up with all the crotch shots? I feel like some sort of Midwestern prude, which I’m not, since I’ve done all kinds of nude modeling and edgy independent film roles (they’re on IMDb, y’all!) but seriously, it seems like the only thing dancers or dance fans want to see these days is over-splits, over-tilts, and over-whatever else involves over-stretching. This is ironic because one of the big things that ends dancers’ careers is over-stretching. Oh well! Your thoughts? Thanks as always for watching, and happy Spring Break btw ☺. Music for this video provided by YouTube Audio Library: “Eyes On You” by Network 415 “Present Day” by E’s Jammy Jams If you enjoyed this video and want to see more, or have a special video request, let me know in the comments or shoot me an email :).
