Nature Essay by Ralph Waldo Emerson

01:20:36
LearnOutLoud.com presents Nature, complete and unabridged by Ralph Waldo Emerson. The essays that make up this slim volume were first published anonymously in 1836. Here Emerson lays down the foundation of what would later become known as transcendentalism; a world-view that argues for a new perspective on how humans can interact with the natural world. Using bold imagery and beautifully written language to illustrate his points, Emerson formulates a belief system where nature itself is a divine entity that we can know directly. With Nature and the essays that followed, Emerson established himself as one of the first quintessentially American writers. His influence can be felt in the work of contemporaries such as Walt Whitman, and ideological heirs like Henry David Thoreau. We are pleased to present to you this American classic on audio. This is the full audio book of Nature by Ralph Waldo Emerson. The World Atlas Every Young Explorer Needs: Maps, Photo Essays, Resources (1999)

58:06
During the Cold War, the magazine committed itself to presenting a balanced view of the physical and human geography of nations beyond the Iron Curtain. The magazine printed articles on Berlin, de-occupied Austria, the Soviet Union, and Communist China that deliberately downplayed politics to focus on culture. In its coverage of the Space Race, National Geographic focused on the scientific achievement while largely avoiding reference to the race's connection to nuclear arms buildup. There were also many articles in the 1930s, 40s and 50s about the individual states and their resources, along with supplement maps of each state. Many of these articles were written by longtime staff such as Frederick Simpich.[11] There were also articles about biology and science topics. In later years articles became outspoken on issues such as environmental issues, deforestation, chemical pollution, global warming, and endangered species. Series of articles were included focusing on the history and varied uses of specific products such as a single metal, gem, food crop, or agricultural product, or an archaeological discovery. Occasionally an entire month's issue would be devoted to a single country, past civilization, a natural resource whose future is endangered, or other theme. In recent decades, the National Geographic Society has unveiled other magazines with different focuses. Whereas in the past, the magazine featured lengthy expositions, recent issues have shorter articles. In addition to being well known for articles about scenery, history, and the most distant corners of the world, the magazine has been recognized for its book-like quality and its standard of photography. It was during the tenure of Society President Alexander Graham Bell and editor Gilbert H. Grosvenor (GHG) that the significance of illustration was first emphasized, in spite of criticism from some of the Board of Managers who considered the many illustrations an indicator of an “unscientific” conception of geography. By 1910, photographs had become the magazine’s trademark and Grosvenor was constantly on the search for "dynamical pictures" as Graham Bell called them, particularly those that provided a sense of motion in a still image. In 1915, GHG began building the group of staff photographers and providing them with advanced tools including the latest darkroom.[12] The magazine began to feature some pages of color photography in the early 1930s, when this technology was still in its early development. During the mid-1930s, Luis Marden (1913–2003), a writer and photographer for National Geographic, convinced the magazine to allow its photographers to use the so-called "miniature" 35 mm Leica cameras loaded with Kodachrome film over bulkier cameras with heavy glass plates that required the use of tripods.[13] In 1959, the magazine started publishing small photographs on its covers, later becoming larger photographs. National Geographic photography quickly shifted to digital photography for both its printed magazine and its website. In subsequent years, the cover, while keeping its yellow border, shed its oak leaf trim and bare table of contents, to allow for a full page photograph taken for one of the month's articles. Issues of National Geographic are often kept by subscribers for years and re-sold at thrift stores as collectibles. The standard for photography has remained high over the subsequent decades and the magazine is still illustrated with some of the highest-quality photojournalism in the world.[14] In 2006, National Geographic began an international photography competition with over eighteen countries participating. In conservative Muslim countries like Iran and Malaysia, photographs featuring topless or scantily clad members of primitive tribal societies are often blacked out; buyers and subscribers often complain that this practice decreases the artistic value of the photographs for which National Geographic is world-renowned. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Geographic_(magazine)

See you in our next video, Anil Thomas. How to-TOK essay in 10 minutes *Overview* Make sure you have more than a week before the submission of the first draft , this will help you eliminate any mistakes and prevent any rushed/incomplete ideas from cluttering your essay which may cause you to go on tangents. SELECT A TITLE FROM THE LIST PROVIDED BY THE IB. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS AND THE MARKING CRITERIA. GATHER YOUR IDEAS ORGANIZE YOUR IDEAS IN PREPARATION FOR WRITING WRITE THE ESSAY *Essay format* SELECT A TITLE FROM THE LIST PROVIDED BY THE IB. Every year IB will provide students with 6 knowledge issues a few months prior to the submission date. It is essential that you get your hand on the six knowledge issue and choose on one that inspires you the most. This title should not only be inspiring to you but also realistic for you to do READ THE INSTRUCTIONS AND THE MARKING CRITERIA. Treat the instructions provided by the TOK teacher and the marking criteria as your BIBLE. Reviewing the marking criteria can earn you the extra points that you may have lost due to residual confusions/logical concerns GATHER YOUR IDEAS I’d recommend that you’d note down your ideas , so they don't clutter and entangle with different ideas. Make a mind-web of ideas and primary connections that may to be relevant when placed together. ORGANISE YOUR IDEAS IN PREPARATION FOR WRITING Now that you’ve decided on your knowledge issue and have an underlying basis of the essay you can have to come up with the knowledge question that is specific to your real life situation/theory that you think are appropriate. With these elements decided you can now write down an outline for the essay. WRITE THE ESSAY Your introduction should be captivating in order to get the examiner interested in your essay The introduction paragraph would consist of you knowledge issue and hence your knowledge question , which include a subtle overview of your WOK’s and AOK’s you plan to use in your essay The body of your essay should deeply dwell into the exploration of the knowledge issue and the AOK’s /WOK’s which now allow you to come up with your mini-conclusion. make sure you have individual paragraphs assigned for each of your mini-contusion. The word-limit for the essay is 1400-1600 words, do not hesitate to add in appropriate information but also refrain from going onto tangents Once done with presenting the perspectives, move on to to the conclusion, this should be short and simple yet informative. *Tips to review, before submission* Ensure that the copy you turn in is printed well or typed on fresh paper with no spelling or grammatical errors Finalise your revision. The last revision should be made, once again, using the topic, the grading criteria, and the Ways of Knowing as your benchmarks. Each paragraph should address the topic material and never drift from it. Have someone else whose reading and intelligence you trust read the essay and discuss it with you. Make sure you have added citations of the appropriate format. The American Experience as Told by Joan Didion (2003)

01:07:21
Where I Was From is a 2003 collection of essays by Joan Didion. It concerns the history and culture of California, where Didion was born and spent much of her life. Where I Was From combines aspects of historical writing, journalism, and memoir to present a history of California as well as Didion's own experiences in that state. The book attempts to understand the differences between California's factual history and its perceived reputation. According to Didion, "This book represents an exploration into my own confusions about the place and the way in which I grew up [...] misapprehensions and misunderstandings so much a part of who I became that I can still to this day confront them only obliquely." Where I Was From is also in parts a retrospective on Didion's work, examining how these "confusions" affected books such as Run, River.[1] Diane Johnson summarizes the apparent hypocrisies of California culture that Didion discusses in the book: "Like all California children, Didion had been fed the old stories of California history, but when she eventually came to think about them, she could see they didn’t 'add up.' The disjunction between myth and reality was too large, the basic paradoxes of the California psyche too obvious: mistrust of government while feeding at the troughs of public works and agricultural subsidies; unchecked commercial exploitation of natural resources in the very footsteps of John Muir; the decline of education from a place near the top of the nation to somewhere near that of Mississippi; apathy, increasing rates of crime, and crime’s related social problems."[2] In The New York Times Book Review, novelist and critic Thomas Mallon wrote, "The more penetrating and idiosyncratic moments of 'Where I Was From' are the work of someone who can still be very much herself, someone who is even now, arguably, a great American writer."[3] Some sections of Where I Was From appeared previously in The New York Review of Books, Esquire, and The New Yorker. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Where_I_Was_From

A Pictorial Essay: Walk, Talk, Buck the Fence

07:22
Walk, Talk, Buck the Fence: What's at stake in the Ecology of Berkeley's Strawberry Canyon Dr. Ignacio Chapela, Associate Professor, Ph.D. College of Natural Resources, University of California Berkeley The Memorial Grove, a humble stretch of land, sustains more than is apparent from the sidewalk of Piedmont Avenue. The trees and the cameo ecosystem they hold together form a lynchpin corridor connecting two large masses of wildscape where foxes, mountain lions and many others find a home. Closing this corridor would reverberate across those wildscapes from the Berkeley Hills to Pinole and Chabot, and beyond to the rest of the network of parks that make the East Bay the envy of the world. This is what makes Berkeley not Stanford, this is the identity that roots deep in our campus history and will outlast the ups and downs of each year's football season. This pictorial essay reveals the wildscape implications of what may be lost with the possible demise of Memorial Grove: what the Oaks sustain.

Essay on Discipline, English Composition on Discipline in student life, Creative writing about discipline, Essay on importance of discipline, Discipline leads to success essay Discipline is the act of keeping our body, mind and soul under control and to do all the works in right manner. It is the act to train our mind to accept rules and regulations. Discipline is the biggest key to succeed in life.If we read in a disciplined way, we can master the subject. If we labour in a disciplined way, we can make better production. A disciplined army has immense advantage over an undisciplined army. A small number of disciplined soldiers can defeat a large number of undisciplined soldiers. A disciplined life gives us health and happiness. A disciplined man is a virtuous man. We can see the example of real discipline in every natural resource in our daily lives. Sun rises and sets at right time every day, moon rises and sets at right time, morning and evening come daily without getting late, river always run, parents always love, teachers always teach us and many more. So why we should be back in our life, we too should follow all the discipline necessary in our lives to go ahead without suffering from problems. We should follow parents, teachers and our elders. We should listen them to know about their experiences and learn from their wins and failures. being in discipline lead us ahead towards highest ladder of the life , Indiscipline causes lots of confusion in the life and makes a human being irresponsible and lazy. It lowers the confidence level and makes mind unsure to do anything even a simple work, if the boys are not disciplined, the boys themselves will learn nothing and the very purpose of education will be defeated. Similarly, if the subordinates do not obey their senior officers in offices and factories, it will become difficult to carry on the work of production and administration. The country will not succeed if its public servants are not disciplined. There will be no plan and no organization. Similarly, if the army and the police refuse to carry out the orders of their generals and commanders, the enemy and the hooligans will have no difficulty in establishing their sway in the country. Thus, an undisciplined nation cannot expect to remain independent even for a moment. Even in minor spheres, such as the home and the playground, people cannot do without discipline. If there be no discipline in the family, all the members of the family will go their own way. Then, there will be no peace and order in the family. Discipline is a good thing and there is no evil in it. It builds character, develops strength and unity and fosters co-operation. It is, therefore, necessary, that boys should be taught discipline from their very childhood. It should never be overlooked, as it is the secret of success in life.
