1. Various of German stock exchange 2. SOUNDBITE: (German) Joachim Llambi, Manager Concord Financial Intermediary GmbH: "It's looking a bit better now, after the American stock exchange turned around last night but that for us it still means wild fluctuations like in the last few days and I don't think the worst is over. Recession in the U.S. is knocking on the door and a 0.75 rate cut of the FED doesn't help a lot. I believe we will also continue to have to deal with the subprime crisis... all those fluctuations are not normal but an every day occurrence at present." 3. Cutaway 4. SOUNDBITE: (German) Joachim Llambi Manager Concord Financial Intermediary GmbH: "We had different conditions. The FED had a good reason to lower the interest rates, but it seems the ECB didn't. We still have a stable economy in Europe, so there isn't the same urgency like in the U.S. We will have to wait the next couple of weeks. I agree, Mr.Trichet is being pushed to move, but on the other hand it is a positive sign that he is not letting himself be blackmailed by analysts, media or whoever." 5. Cutaway STORYLINE: European markets surged on Thursday as a stunning comeback on Wall Street overnight heartened investors over concerns about the U.S. economy. Markets in Britain, Germany, and France followed most Asian markets to rise on Thursday morning, helping erase losses from their steep slide earlier this week that was driven by fears of a recession in the U.S., a vital export market. Germany's DAX index climbed 6.03 percent to 6,827.32. "It's looking a bit better now, after the American stock exchange turned around last night but that for us it still means wild fluctuations like in the last few days and I don't think the worst is over," said Joachim Llambi, a manager with Concord Financial Intermediary GmbH. "We still have a stable economy in Europe, so there isn't the same urgency like in the U.S.," he added. On Wednesday the Dow Jones industrial average swung 631.86 points from its low point to its high - its largest single-day reversal in more than five years. PHILIPPINES: STOCK EXCHANGE INDEX CONTINUES TO SLIDE

03:15
English/Nat Philippine shares continued their decline on Friday as investors continued to sell amid fears of the country's economic prospects. The Philippine Stock Exchange index was down by eight-point-three when it closed - its lowest since April 1993. Not even the strong showing of the peso against the dollar improved Manila stocks' fortunes. Friday saw the peso continuing the upward trend it took Thursday even as other currencies in the region are still falling to record lows. Philippine stocks continued its slide on Friday with the index down by eight-point-three per cent at the end of the day's trading. The shares fell dramatically on Thursday when it shed 91-point-49 points, or five-point-two per cent, the index's lowest level in four-and-a-half years. In the first four trading days of 1998, the index had lost more than 11 per cent. In all of 1997, it surrendered 41 per cent of its value. Traders say that newspaper reports of possible massive layoffs on the back of the country's economic and financial ills sparked a wave of selling. And at this point, some are uncertain where the market is headed. SOUNDBITE: (English) "There was frightening and demoralizing. One would not really know when the bloodletting will stop or the hemorrhaging will stop." SUPER CAPTION: Auggie de Vera, Stock Trader But while the stocks suffered, the peso started to appreciate. It bucked the trend of most regional currencies and closed slightly higher on Thursday and continued its upward trend on Friday. Last Tuesday, the peso fell more than five per cent to a record-low 44-point-78 per dollar. But on Friday it was averaging at 44-point-64 against the green back. Traders believe that the peso strength is due to the launch of a new system aimed at providing security for companies with unhedged dollar loans. The Bankers Association of the Philippines and the Central Bank sponsored a symposium on the new so-called non-deliverable forward facility. At the facility, corporate borrowers can lock into a pre-determined exchange rate based on a central bank calculation using commercial bank interest rates. This will protect companies paying off debt with dollars from sharp fluctuations in the peso-dollar rate when their loan matures. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Our observation that when the currency was deteriorating, many of the dollar borrowers became panicky, nervous, or just very, very apprehensive and started to buy to dollars. That contributed to the pressure which has changed the demand-supply equation and as a result we saw more depreciation. I don't think we would like to see that and this is one way to ease the pressure which has contributed to the peso's fall the least couple of weeks." SUPER CAPTION: Deogracias Vistan, President, Bankers Association of the Philippines The peso has plunged by about forty per cent against the dollar since July when the Asian-wide currency crisis began. Meanwhile, some money changers in Manila remained closed on Friday after police shut down dozens of them saying they were holding dollars. Manila has an estimated 300 money changers, which typically offer rates that are slightly better than banks' but are sometimes accused of shortchanging customers. Police believe the money changers have been responsible for the peso's rapid decline, and they made sure the exchange dealers were shut under orders from Mayor Alfredo Lim. He accused the money changers of accepting dollars from customers but refusing to sell them. What is The Big Mac index?

01:12
Welcome to the Investors Trading Academy talking glossary of financial terms and events. Our word of the day is “Big Mac index” The Big Mac index was devised by Pam Woodall of the Economist in 1986, as a light-hearted guide to whether currencies are at their "correct" level. It is based on one of the oldest concepts in international economics, purchasing power parity (PPP), the notion that a dollar, say, should buy the same amount in all countries. In the long run, argue pop fans, currencies should move towards the exchange rate, which equalizes the prices of an identical basket of goods and services in each country. In this case, the basket is a McDonalds' Big Mac, which is produced in more than 100 countries. The Big Mac PPP is the exchange rate that would leave hamburgers costing the same in the United States as elsewhere. Comparing actual exchange rates with PPP signals whether a currency is undervalued or overvalued. Some studies have found that the Big Mac index is often a better predictor of currency movements than more theoretically rigorous models. By Barry Norman, Investors Trading Academy - ITA

What Makes Stock Prices Move Up and Down

03:16
To understand what makes stocks and shares price move you must first understand a few things about the current pricing of a stock. At any given time during regular trading hours a stock has 3 values associated with it. A bid, an ask, and a current price. The bid is the highest amount someone is currently willing to pay for a share of stock, while the ask is the lowest amount someone is currently willing to accept for a share of stock. Each number will usually be shown next to the number of shares the investor is offering or asking for. The price of a stock at any given time is simply the last price a share of that stock sold for. Usually the bid and the ask are relatively close to the current share price. The difference between the bid and the ask is called the spread and it is usually healthier for a stock to have a smaller spread. Now we will talk about what makes the price of stock change. If you have ever taken a beginners economics course you probably remember learning about supply and demand. The concept is quite simple. If there is a larger supply of a product than there is demand, the price will likely drop. If there is a greater demand and not enough supply to match, than the price will probably rise. This is also true with stocks and shares. As was explained in lesson 1, the stock market is a literal market where a product, namely ownership of a company, is bought and sold. This means it runs on similar economic principles. If there are a lot of investors trying to sell a stock, and a much smaller number of investors looking to buy that same stock, the price will of the stock will begin dropping. Let’s look closer at the reasoning behind the price drop by creating a mini-market with five people; John, Jessica, Jeremy, Janet, and Jimmy. We will pretend that all five of these investors own 100 shares of stock in Company A. One day they find out that Company A messed up on a new product and it will be delayed for a year. Four of them decide to sell their shares in the company and put them up for sale. Unfortunately, due to the news, there is only one investor that is interested in buying the stock for its current price. John sells his shares, but that leaves Jessica, Jeremy, and Janet, all with shares they still would like to sell. There is nobody willing to buy at the current price, but one investor has offered to buy at a price $1 lower than the current price. Jessica sells to the investor, and the current stock price adjusts to show a current worth that is $1 less than before. If Jeremy and Janet decide to sell as well, they may push the current price even lower as they seek to find investors to purchase their shares of stock. Sometimes when a company announces extremely bad news you can see the worth of a single share of stock drop more than 50% in a single day. To learn more about the stock market and how to make money with stock try one of our stock market courses! You can learn from and interact with professional traders.

Episode 116: How the Chicago Board Option Exchange (CBOE) Volatility Index (VIX) Works

This measure is known as the Chicago Board Options Exchange Volatility Index, commonly referred to simply by its ticker symbol VIX. So how does the VIX work? Commonly referred to as the investor fear gauge, the VIX is constructed using implied volatilities of a wide range of S&P 500 options. As a way of producing a numerical value, the VIX uses a mathematical formula to analyze the difference between the purchase of call and put option prices. A call is a type of option contract that gives the owner the right to purchase a specified number of a certain security at a set price for an established period of time. Although the owner of the contract may exercise their call option if they wish, they are under no obligation to do so. So here is how it works. Lets say that you purchase a call option to purchase 100 shares XYZ Company at $100 over the next seven days. XYZ Company is currently trading at $95 per share. If you exercised your call option now you would be purchasing shares of XYZ Company for $100 apiece while their market value is $95. So essentially you are losing $5 per share, or $500 total if you purchase 100 shares. So unless its share price increases over $100 there is no reason for you to exercise your call option. But if XYZ Company appreciates to lets say $105 per share, you can exercise your call option and purchase shares for $100 each. You can then turnaround and immediately sell them for $105 per share, which is the market value, or you can simply put them in your portfolio. Selling the securities immediately would yield a $5 per share profit or $500 total assuming 100 shares are purchased. Now the only reason that an investor would by a call option is if they felt that the market was going to appreciate value. As a result, a greater number of call options compared to put options will lower the numerical value of the VIX. Now a put is another type of option contract that works in a similar fashion to a call. However, instead of having the option to purchase a security, a put provides the owner with the right to sell a specified number of shares at a specific price within a certain period of time. Think of a put option as like insurance on your home or vehicle. Just like homeowners insurance and auto insurance, a put option is meant to protect you in the case that your asset becomes damaged, or in this case decreases in value significantly. If that does happen, you have a contract that gives the right to sell the security at a higher than market value. For example, lets say that you purchase a put option allowing you to acquire 100 shares of XYZ company at $100 per share for a seven day period. All of a sudden the share price of XYZ Company plummets from $105 to $90 per share. Because you are the owner of a put option, you can exercise your option and sell your shares at $100 per share instead of the market value of $90 per share, which would save you quite a bit of money. The only reason that an investor would purchase a put option is if they expected a security to decrease in value and they either wanted to protect their own investments or take advantage of investors who are not as vigilant. Taking into account the basic economic principle of supply and demand, if investors purchase a larger number of call options the the premiums or prices of those options will increase, which will result in a lower VIX. If investors purchase a larger number of put options than the premiums of those options will increase, which will result in a higher VIX. Although meaningless to some, this numerical carries significant importance to investors. A score of greater than 30 communicates that a greater amount of volatility is expected going forward and investors are overall more fearful. A score of less than 20 communicates the expectation of low risk and low market volatility in the future. At least thats the expectation. Due to the fact that the VIX is evaluating calls and puts that are purchased based upon assumptions as well as expectations, the index measures the expectation of volatility and not actual volatility itself. So as with anything, there is always a risk of relying solely on one indicator to make investment decisions.

Intro and Getting Stock Price Data - Python Programming for Finance p.1

09:34
Welcome to a Python for Finance tutorial series. In this series, we're going to run through the basics of importing financial (stock) data into Python using the Pandas framework. From here, we'll manipulate the data and attempt to come up with some sort of system for investing in companies, apply some machine learning, even some deep learning, and then learn how to back-test a strategy. I assume you know the fundamentals of Python. If you're not sure if that's you, click the fundamentals link, look at some of the topics in the series, and make a judgement call. If at any point you are stuck in this series or confused on a topic or concept, feel free to ask for help and I will do my best to help. https://pythonprogramming.net https://twitter.com/sentdex https://www.facebook.com/pythonprogramming.net/ https://plus.google.com/+sentdex

22. Stock Index, Oil and Other Futures Markets

01:10:35
Financial Markets (ECON 252) Futures markets have expanded far beyond their initial application to farmer's planting and harvest cycles. These markets now allow investors and traders to set prices for a broad spectrum of assets and for a whole term structure stretching into the distant future. Some of these markets are often priced according to simple fair-value formulae, others are not. Futures markets can be in backwardation, where the future price is lower than the present, spot price. They can also be in contango, where the price rises with maturity and is higher in the future than it is today. The S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Index is a recent invention that has transferred the mechanics of futures markets to the prices of single-family homes in ten real estate markets, in an effort to create a national market for residential real estate. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Key Things to Know about Fixed Income ETFs | Fidelity

Used correctly, fixed income can add diversification and a steady source of income to any investor’s portfolio. But how do you choose the right fixed-income ETF? The key to choosing the right fixed-income ETF lies in what it actually holds. U.S. bonds or international bonds? Government securities or corporate debt? Bonds that come due in two years or 20 years? Each decision determines the level of risk you’re taking and the potential return. There are many types of risks to consider with bond investing. Let’s talk more about two in particular: Credit risk and Interest-rate risk. Determining the level of credit risk you want to assume is an important first step when choosing a fixed-income ETF. Do you want an ETF that only holds conservative bonds—like bonds issued by the U.S. Treasury? Or do you want one holding riskier corporate debt? The latter may pay you a higher interest rate, but if the company issuing the bond goes bankrupt, you’ll lose out. ETFs cover the full range of available credit. Look carefully at the credit quality composition of the ETFs underlying holdings, and don’t be lured in by promises of high yields unless you understand the risks. Bonds are funny. Intuitively, you would assume that higher interest rates are good for bondholders, as they can reinvest bond income at higher prevailing interest rates. But rising interest rates may be bad news, at least in the short term. Imagine that the government issues a 10-year bond paying an interest rate of 2%. But shortly thereafter, the U.S. Federal Reserve hikes interest rates. Now, if the government wants to issue a new 10-year bond, it has to pay 3% a year in interest. No one is going to pay the same amount for the 2% bond as the 3% bond; instead, the price of the 2% bond will have to fall to make its yield as attractive as the new, higher-yielding security. That’s how bonds work, like a seesaw: As yields rise, prices fall and vice versa. Another important measure to consider when looking at interest rate risk is duration which helps to approximate the degree of price sensitivity of a bond to changes in interest rates. The longer the duration, the more any change in interest rates will affect your investment. Conversely, the shorter the duration, the less any change in interest rates will affect your investment. Let’s review a few other considerations when looking at fixed income ETFs. First, expense ratios: Because your expected return in a bond ETF is lower than in most stock ETFs, expenses take on extra importance. Generally speaking, the lower the fees, the better. Second, tracking difference: It can be harder to run a bond index fund than an equity fund, so you may see significant variation between the fund’s performance and the index’s returns. Try to seek out funds with low levels of tracking difference, meaning they track their index well. Finally, some bonds can be illiquid. As a result, it’s extra important to look out for bond ETFs with good trading volumes and tight spreads. There are other factors to watch for too, but these are the basics. ETFs can be a great tool for accessing the bond space, but as with anything, it pays to know what you’re buying before you make the leap.
