Business by bike: Providence entrepreneurs start small and green

08:15
Providence people who use bikes in their work include police officers, merchants, messengers, and even farmers. Most of them are in their 20s and 30s. Tom Olson, owner of Eco Pedicab, pedals between 120 and 300 miles a week as he taxis people around Providence. Val Khislavsky pedals a three-wheeled cart with a food cooler to sell her homemade pudding pops. Urban farmers Tess Brown-Lavoie, Laura Brown-Lavoie, and Fay Strongin, of Sidewalk Ends Farm, and Than Wood, of Front Step Farm, use bicycles with special trailers to transport fresh grown produce to market and to local restaurants as well as compost materials to the farm. The use of the bicycle permits an economical entry level into certain businesses with a green frame of mind. Networking for SMEs

06:31
Networking for SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) is the specialist topic of this video produced by 2 students for the course Venture Marketing Utrecht University. Being a SME involves looking for business partners, attracting customers and seeking advice, knowledge and resources. All of this can be obtained through one simple business tool: networking. This video touches upon various ways of networking, how to find sources and in what ways networking is beneficial for your enterprise. For this project we asked 2 program directors from the training institute De Baak (www.debaak.com) how they use networking in their job and how they would approach networking as a SME. By the support of literature we asked data on certain areas of networking, for example network size, level of formality, diversity, density, stability and flexibility. This made it possible to research the deeper underlying structures of networking. Sources We thank Kristin Jooss-Amadon and Rutger Slump from De Baak for their cooperation. The Digital Entrepreneur

04:24
Dr. Ayman El Tarabishy Ayman is currently a visiting professor at the George Washington University's School of Business, and is also the Executive Director of the International Council for Small Business (ICSB), a coalition of more than a dozen national organizations across the globe devoted to advancing small business research and practices. Ayman's current research is in entrepreneurial leadership. He has presented his work at national and international conferences and has published research articles in the Journal of Private Equity, the Southern Business Review, and the International Journal of Entrepreneurship Education. Ayman has written a White Paper entitled 'Keeping the Entrepreneurial Spirit Alive in the Family Business - Introducing the idea of the Digital Entrepreneur'. Entrepreneurship requires innovation as well, and that means revolution (what Schumpeter called "creative destruction"). Quality improvement must be combined with qualitative change, and the latter often calls for increased rather than decreased variability, in order to create new (innovative) and better products and processes. The digital entrepreneur not only provides products or services that meet the needs of customers and clients, but the digital entrepreneur adds value in a social/societal sense. This White Paper has been posted by The Network of Family Businesses. Ayman's seminar will be presented on July 15th at 11:00 AM.

Small Family Firms are much more financially sophisticated than thought

05:00
Small Family Firms are much more financially sophisticated than thought, according to a paper by Stefano Caselli and Stefano Gatti with Alberta Di Giuli in "Journal of Banking and Finance" which surveys 544 small firms operating in Italy. Register to Bocconi Newsletter http://www.unibocconi.eu/newsletter The universe of Small Family Firms (SFFs) is important, partially unexplored and full of prejudices whereas the common understanding is that the smaller the firm the poorer are both managerial skills and financial capabilities. However, the evidence coming from the paper Are Small Family Firms Financially Sophisticated? by Stefano Caselli, Stefano Gatti (both Department of Finance) and Alberta Di Giuli (ISCTE Business School), forthcoming in Journal of Banking and Finance (Volume 35, Issue 11, November 2011, doi: 10.1016/j.jbankfin.2011.03.021), gives a very different and more complex perspective. The main finding coming from the paper is that SSFs which are able to keep their family nature and culture but also insert a variety of different factors improving their managerial attitude show a stronger level of financial sophistication and a higher capability to react to market because of their better financial background. The main factors are related to new generations, to external shareholders and to external managers becoming CEO and/or CFO. To understand whether SFFs use only basic financial products (such as checking and saving accounts) or make also broad use of non-basic products (such as mergers and acquisitions advisory, factoring and leasing) and to realize what are the characteristics of financially sophisticated SFFs in terms of generation, size, governance and financial advisory, the authors formulated a questionnaire in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce of Milan, and sampled 544 small firms that operate in Italy. The surveyed firms were asked to report an extensive list of characteristics and financial policies. Non-basic products were divided into four broad categories depending on the needs served: corporate finance products, cash management products, corporate lending products, and risk management products. For each category, the authors developed a score of financial sophistication that measures the number of different non-basic products a firm adopts. SFFs are extremely sophisticated, especially with regards to the corporate lending and corporate finance product categories. Generation, external ownership, and non-family CFOs affect SFFs choices of non-basic financial products, although differently in the four product categories studied.Firms that have an external shareholder and that hire a non-family CFO show a wide variety of non-basic financial products in three of the four product categories (cash management, corporate lending and risk management), and hence are more willing to have the "multiple interactions" with banks that lead to stronger relationships with financial intermediaries. These results are relevant for SFF owners' choices when they seek to establish a long-term relationship with a bank (for example, whether to hire a non-family member as CFO or to allow an external shareholder in the ownership structure) and for financial institutions that target SFFs. These results have practical implications for the choices of SFF owners regarding the existence of a non-family CFO, CEO and non-family shareholders. A firm that is searching for a strong and long-term relationship with banks through multiple interactions (i.e. the purchase of multiple products from a bank) and is seeking, for example, a higher level of sophistication in terms of cash management products, should consider hiring an external CFO.In contrast, hiring a non-family manager would have no impact. Consideration of the pros and cons of allowing an external shareholder into the ownership of a company should take into account the higher level of financial sophistication that the presence of an external shareholder can provide for corporate lending and risk management products. Firms in their first and second generations should be aware of their tendency to have a low level of financial sophistication, which could undermine their relationship with banks and eventually their growth. The findings might also be useful for the financial institutions that supply financial products to SFFs. They could eventually tailor their products based on SFF characteristics (generation, presence of external shareholders and CFO).

The use of public incentives in the promotion of private R&D activities: Ester Martínez-Ros

40:57
The paper proposes the analysis of the effects of R&D tax incentives on the propensity to innovate of the Spanish firms. Moreover, we are interested in the way the use of public funds allows the transmission of inputs into outputs in the innovation function. Therefore, we are looking for answers about the marginal effects of fiscal incentives to innovation on the innovative behavior of Spanish firms. The empirical study uses data from several sources, aggregated data from the OECD, the Survey on Business Strategies and tax records from the corporate tax. The results show that public policies have some effect on the use of private funds to promote innovation in big firms but they do not either affect the propensity to innovate or modify the behavior of small firms. As a result, we propose to make a deep revision in the design of the system of fiscal incentives in order to allow small and medium firms benefiting more from it. About the speaker Ester Martínez-Ros is Associate Professor of Management at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. She is PhD. by Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and Ms. Science in Economics by University College London. She teaches at Universidad Carlos III, Management, Organization Behaviour and Introduction to Business at the degree level and Research Methods in the PhD Program. She has also collaborated in many PhD. Programs at Universidad Pablo Olavide, and at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. The main research interest relies on the analysis of innovation decisions and its effect on the firm performance. She has also focused on the problems of inference in the innovation determinants due to the existence of heterogeneous unobserved effects. Some selected international academic contributions have been published in: Journal of High Technology Management Research; Applied Economics, Economics of Innovation and New Technology, Small Business Economics, International Marketing Review, Tourism Management, European Management Review, International Journal of Industrial Organization, Journal of Advertising Research, Technovation, International Journal of Hospitality Management.

Small Business Accountants - Five Services They Offer In Addition To Data Entry Work

04:28
transcript Small business accountants are responsible for the most critical functions of an organization. Their work involves tedious activities such as analyzing, interpreting and presenting intricate data. Unlike bookkeepers who mostly monitor and track daily transactions of a business, accountants are involved in business planning and management. Many small-scale entrepreneurs overlook the duties of an accountant and prefer to employ a bookkeeper who knows how to do simple journal accounts. What such entrepreneurs do not realize is that small business accountants are multi-purpose professionals. They can offer the following five services in addition to data entry work. Financial Consulting - Small business owners are easily tempted to mix personal and business finances. An accountant can advise them on how to separate and invest both personal and business finances in profitable ways. Tax Consulting - The issues of tax plagues many small-scale businessmen. Most of them want more than just having their tax forms prepared. Small business accountants are actively involved in tax planning and counseling in order to help their clients spend less money on taxes and avoid tax related issues with the IRS. Internal Business Consulting - Accounting firms that specialize in small enterprises services are perfect consultants. They consist of big teams of experts in various fields of business such as Accounting, risk management, inventory management, human resources, auditing and taxation, financial planning and Information Technology among others. As a result, they are dependable when a small-sized organization is seeking a growth and an expansion strategy. IT services - Small business accountants have changed the way they carry out their duties because of the ever-changing Information Technology field. In the few past years businesses were faced with the challenge of introducing computers to their work stations. Today the internet development has brought about major changes in the accountancy work. Reliable clerks should not only up-date the existing accounting software versions but also provide advice and guide entrepreneurs on IT matters. Borrowing Advice - Since an accountant prepares the loss and profit accounts of an organization, he or she is in a better position to offer borrowing advice. If the company lacks enough money to maintain its projects or add others, an accountant can advise it on the best lenders to approach and if there are other viable sources of funds. Proper choice of small business accountants should not be disregarded. A business owner or manager must decide if the best candidate should work on a full-time or a part-time basis. To make this decision he or she must focus on the cost of hiring any of the two candidates. The best part-time bookkeepers are outsourced accountancy firms. They control the functions that take place in a remote accounting department from their office. These firms do not require health benefits, office space or any other requirements that a full-time in-house small business accountants do. When selecting the most appropriate small business accountants one has to focus on education background and competency levels. Certified Public Accountants are accepted everywhere in the US. They have passed various tests that are offered and administered by their states. They are knowledgeable in many areas of the accounting and finance profession. When interviewing a representative of an accountancy firm or a CPA candidate, a small-scale business proprietor should ask questions about the hourly fees they would charge. He or she should also ask if the fees charged include other advisory services too.
