This unique atlas comprises a series of maps showing the distribution and abundance of minerals formed in water, by volcanic activity, and by weathering to create the dust that makes Mars red. Together the maps provide a global context for the dominant geological processes that have defined the planet's history. The maps were built from ten years of data collected by the OMEGA visible and infrared mineralogical mapping spectrometer on Mars Express. The animation cycles through maps showing: individual sites where a range of minerals that can only be formed in the presence of water were detected; maps of olivine and pyroxene, minerals that tell the story of volcanism and the evolution of the planet's interior; and ferric oxide and dust. Ferric oxide is a mineral phase of iron, and is present everywhere on the planet: within the bulk crust, lava outflows and the dust oxidised by chemical reactions with the martian atmosphere, causing the surface to 'rust' slowly over billions of years, giving Mars its distinctive red hue. Mars brimming with ice – game changer for future colonist Massive water ice deposits discovered on surface of Mars Planetary scientist looking at NASA’s Mars data and maps, discovered what appeared to be bluish hues. Eight such spots were discovered and upon closer examination, the scientist were able to identify strange geological features as massive ice deposits. Deposits or Scraps were so large, some are 140m thick. Scientist knew Mars was once a planet abundant with water and had relatively thick atmosphere, but due to relatively low mass of the planet, Mars over billions of years lost much of its Atmosphere. Discovery of such ice deposits brings hope of future manned missions to the red planet and eventual colonization of the planet. Elon Musk with SpaceX and NASA plan manned missions to the red planet in not too distant future. However Elon Musk has far greater plans for the red plant, which includes eventual colonization of the planet. Ice discovered on Mars can be turned in to a water, oxygen and even a fuel propellant. Makes things a lot easier for future colonist, who would normally be dependent on complex machinery for life support, water and air to breathe.

'Badwater' Industrial Complex and/or Mining Operation on Mars

The photographs analyzed here (ESP_026795_1470 and P16_007438_1462_XN_33S297W) were taken by NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter on 14 April 2012 and 27 February 2008 respectively. NASA describes the photographs as "Central Structure of an Impact Crater" and "Hellas Planitia" respectively. Discovered is what looks like either an abandoned industrial complex and/or mining operation in Badwater Crater. The straight sides of a typical rectangular-shaped surface feature measures on average approximately 200 metres in length. Could this have been an ancient site where some type of industrial/mining operations were conducted? There seems to be some differences in the two photographs possibly indicating activity on the surface. After five decades of spacecraft exploration of the Solar System, the origin of two moons of Mars, Phobos and Deimos, remains a perplexing mystery. Are they a) captured asteroids, b) remnants of Mars's formation, or c) reaccreted impact ejecta from Mars? These small bodies lie at the crossroads of a wide range of outstanding issues in solar system research, and elucidating their origin tests our understanding of planet formation and solar system evolution, including the question of how water and organics became available on Earth. Meanwhile, Phobos and Deimos are emerging as key stepping stones in the future human exploration of Mars. Dr. Lee's talk will cover the history of our efforts to understand Phobos and Deimos, and new prospects in their exploration.

And here are the instruments that will make that possible. It contains 2 cameras on the probe’s mast, one called Mastcam-Z, which is the main “eye” for the rover. It can take 360 degree panoramic 3D views with an advanced zoom that can see something the size of a housefly from the distance of a soccer field. And the second camera is called SuperCam. This can actually do a spectrographic analysis of a rock’s chemical makeup from over 20 feet away by burning a hole in the rock as small as the point of a pencil. This was developed in conjunction with a team from France. PIXL, or Planetary Instrument for X-Ray Lithochemistry will examine rock and soil samples for signs of ancient microbial life and can take extremely close up images of soil samples down to the size of a grain of salt. MEDA, the Mars Environmental Dynamics Analyzer is a contribution from a team in Spain, it’s a tiny weather lab that measures wind speed, temperature and humidity and also gathers data about dust particles in the Martian atmosphere. RIMFAX, the Radar Imager for Mars Subsurface Experiment from Norway is basically like a sonogram that see tens of meters below the ground and detect elements down to the centimeter. This will help find underground water and ice on Mars. The aptly named SHERLOC, or Scanning Habitable Environments with Raman and Luminescence for Organics and Chemicals is a big sciency way of saying it looks for signs of ancient life with UV light, much like forensic investigators at crime scenes. Hence, Sherlock. But SHERLOC will carry a couple of interesting things with it, one is a Mars meteorite for calibration purposes. There’s a handful of meteorites found here on Earth that we know were once a part of Mars that were blasted away in an asteroid impact, then travelled through the solar system and eventually landed on Earth. SHERLOC is going to carry a piece of one of those meteorites to use to calibrate its laser on the Martian surface, which means this will be the first time a piece of martian rock will be returned to Mars. The other thing is it will be carrying samples of materials that may be used to make Martian spacesuits, to see how well they fare in the Martian environment. And last but definitely not least is MOXIE, the Mars Oxygen ISRU Experiment. This is the module that will be testing in situ resource utilization techniques in the hopes of turning the CO2 in the martian atmosphere into oxygen, just like a tree. The rover will also contain a special microphone, giving us the first sound recordings from the surface of Mars.

Watch as the image takes on a flattened out view, with no depth and then when rotated more depth becomes visible. This heading is due north, notice how more depth is in the image. Now we can see things as they where captured. This angle and heading is now in correct perspective to understand the information in the image. Not all headings are going to be north. Sometimes you will find things at different headings. The things you are about to see are only in this image at this precise heading. I sure hope there are others who are taking notes on this and will try this for themselves. Contrary to popular belief the orbiter does not capture images using a camera, but it bounces frequencies off the surface and stores the data into computer language. Do you see anything that resembles possible life? Look very careful as there is a life form figure in this frame. This is nothing, wait I will show you many more before this presentation is done. Objects you may see: vegetation, trees, shelters, caves, transportation, steps, ramps, walkways, catwalks, ferns, people, animals, saucer craft, other space craft, technology. If you pause the video and have a longer look you will be able to perceive more objects. These are complex structures, evidence of intelligent design. There is way to much here to dismiss as image artifacts or imagination. The false coloring put into the image by NASA is to distract from the perspective. As you see in these images, the blue is a false coloring and runs as stripes across the image. That data received It is not a photograph, but radio frequencies that need to be assembled, formatted, calibrated, stitched, mosaicked, and finally projected from the orbiter's point of view to a standard map orientation. So in effect the image map has a particular point of view where the orbiter captured the strip of landscape. This means the images can only be understood from the correct angle, heading and range the satellite was capturing the topography of the land. That is why correct heading and range is Important to be able to understand the information. When an image is properly viewed at the right heading and angle it was taken, things will stand out. Hills and valleys can be perceived and understood. Trees, shrubs,structures and many more things will pop out at the viewer. Walkways, roads, paths, trails, porches, monuments, will line up on the same plane or what would be a universal level line to each other in the image. Also because satellite images are in fact not true photos but are rather a rendering or facsimile of the surface based on frequencies assembled into a drawing or painting. This is why many objects or areas appear to look like a Painting. Again I can not stress this enough that these are not real photos of the surface. They are assembled into a drawing. Satellite image is captured at an angle to the surface, and not captured at a straight downward view. It would be almost impossible to always have a direct straight down shot on everything. So when viewing these images in Google Mars make sure to approach the image at about a 50 degree angle to the surface. Then try and rotate the view in a 360 rotation. As you do this rotation check for the depth in the image to be at its greatest, when things begin to stand upright. When you find the best depth you can begin to search for objects that are standing up off the surface.

Bio: Christopher (Chris) Re is an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science at Stanford University and a Robert N. Noyce Family Faculty Scholar. His work's goal is to enable users and developers to build applications that more deeply understand and exploit data. Chris received his PhD from the University of Washington in Seattle under the supervision of Dan Suciu. For his PhD work in probabilistic data management, Chris received the SIGMOD 2010 Jim Gray Dissertation Award. He then spent four wonderful years on the faculty of the University of Wisconsin, Madison, before moving to Stanford in 2013. He helped discover the first join algorithm with worst-case optimal running time, which won the best paper at PODS 2012. He also helped develop a framework for feature engineering that won the best paper at SIGMOD 2014. In addition, work from his group has been incorporated into scientific efforts including the IceCube neutrino detector and PaleoDeepDive, and into Cloudera's Impala and products from Oracle, Pivotal, and Microsoft's Adam. He received an NSF CAREER Award in 2011, an Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship in 2013, and a Moore Data Driven Investigator Award in 2014.

Dr Tsafnat has worked in the US at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Space in satellite thermal design and analysis, and was involved in various projects with NASA Ames Research Center. Dr Tsafnat supervises a PhD student and several undergraduate honours thesis students in space engineering projects, including QB50 and SMiLE. - Water Extraction - Mars’ Mining Model (WEM³) Since ancient times, natural resources have been crucial to human exploration and colonisation. A new Off-Earth exploration era started almost half century ago when NASA conducted the first exploration mission to Mars. The agency is planning to send two new lander/rover missions in 2016 and 2020 to drilling and sampling the surface of the red planet to assess available resources and technological requirements to establish future colonies. This presentation examines the main structure and key finding of the so-called Water Extraction-Mars’ Mining Model (WEM3). Via linear optimisation WEM³ aims to calculate the optimum fleet size to satisfy crewed missions’ requirements providing enough water for a number of colony members restricted to the distance to the mine-site, equipment type and capacity. --- Mr. Carlos Tapia Cortez is a PhD candidate of the School of Mining Engineering at UNSW. He received his BSc in Mining Engineering from the University of Atacama, Chile. Completed his MBA in Oil and Gas at the Getulio Vargas Foundation, Brazil and studied Economics at the Catholic University of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Carlos has ten years of experience in mining engineering, mine planning, mine operations, strategic supply planning and procurement intelligence, performing in Chile, Brazil and Peru in companies such as BHP Billiton, Anglo American, Codelco, Vale and Maptek. He is currently works in his PhD research in the field of mineral economics.

Abstract: Every day, rovers on Mars send back data for new observation targets (e.g., rocks, soils, layers).  Some of these targets yield new discoveries that are published in the scientific literature.  Yet there is currently no accessible link between data (or targets) and their subsequent publications.  We are building the Mars Target Encyclopedia (MTE) to enable users to ask questions such as "What do we know about target Epworth?" and "What are all of the Mars targets that contain chlorine?"  We use information extraction and machine learning methods to mine the steadily growing body of scientific publications and extract compositional knowledge about Mars surface targets.  The MTE benefits Mars mission planners, planetary scientists, and the interested public by condensing relevant knowledge into a central resource in an accessible way.  More than just a literature search, the MTE allows us to ask new questions that previously could not be answered.
Oddities in Reull Vallis on Mars

The photograph analyzed here (ESP_032556_1390) was taken by NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter on 07 July 2013 and is described as ‘Lobate Debris Apron.’ Here I feature huge, perfect sphere's or balls I discovered on the side of what looks like an ancient eroded pyramid on Mars. The spheres measure approximately 5 metres in diameter and look exactly like those found on Earth in Easter Island, Costa Rica and other regions. I speculate the same ancient builder race/s that constructed the megalithic structures of Earth also built those found on Mars, however due to devastating catastrophes on Mars in the distant past we are only seeing the remnants, e.g. megalithic blocks,/slabs, spheres, sculptures and ruins. The photograph analyzed here (ESP_057677_1230) was taken by NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter on 15 November 2018 and is described as ‘Scarp in Mid-Latitude Mantle.’ I found yet another of these strange triangular surface anomalies. The previous one I found measure 210 metres per side, this one has a perfectly straight edge which is 1.6 km long. The surface of this straight edge looks highly unnatural, might is be that this was a type of surface mining operation or could this be a buried structure? The photograph analyzed here (ESP_026237_2170) was taken by NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter on 01 March 2012 and is described as 'Knob with Apron and Smaller Knobs Connected by Lineations.' Shown here are more weird artefatcs and anomalies I discovered in a rather strange area of the Northern hemisphere (the geological features look very different to those seen in my previous video's and blog's). The photograph analyzed here (ESP_023234_2095) was taken by NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter HiRISE Camera on 11 July 2011. NASA describes the photographs as 'Olivine-Rich Terrain in Nilosyrtis Region.' I discovered what looks like another partially buried, large megalithic-block on Mars (approximately 8 metres wide). I further speculate that this block was part of a retaining wall similar to those found in Asimov Crater.
