Thousands of mining jobs are waiting in Western Australia but Aussies don’t want them

Thousands of mining jobs are waiting in Western Australia but Aussies don’t want them: https://www.news.com.au/finance/business/mining/thousands-of-mining-jobs-are-waiting-in-western-australia-but-aussies-dont-want-them/news-story/9abb09bee9c85fc6419597a14e77df3e. Thanks for watching, subscribe for more videos: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCd_ODCcrc4jEWgi4qYyy0wg?sub_confirmation=1  From 2012 to 2016, the mining industry experienced a severe downturn, culling close to 60,000 jobs and making full-time work an almost impossible get. But now, especially in Western Australia and Queensland, the mining industry is on the road to recovery — and companies are begging Aussies to come and work for them. According to the latest data from SEEK, the mining, resource and energy sector has consistently recorded the largest growth in job ads for the past 11 months. The sector is throwing out 32 per cent more job ads now than it was at the same time last year and is posting almost four times more job ads than Australia’s average. But just because mining companies are putting out thousands of ads and offering salaries paying well over $150,000 doesn’t mean Aussies are picking them up. Earlier this week, the CEO of WA’s Chamber of Minerals and Energy backed a migration agreement that would hopefully combat a severe skills shortage in the mining region of the Goldfields. If approved, the Designated Area Migration Agreement would allow overseas workers to be flown over to work in the mines and would make them exempt from the skilled migrants requirement. Chief executive Paul Everingham told the ABC there were more than 1000 vacancies in the Kalgoorlie-Boulder mining sector and said the region was at crisis point.  “You can’t sugar coat that — they’re available now and they’re not being filled, so however you can get them (workers),” Mr Everingham said. “All Australian companies want to employ Australians first, but if there aren’t enough Australians … we have got to remember there’s an infrastructure boom going on in NSW. “So if we have to set up special immigration or work zones, our members would definitely welcome the ability to get access to skilled workers immediately.” The WA mining industry is advertising for thousands of jobs ranging from cleaners to tradesmen to university-educated engineers. But following Mr Everidge’s comments, a number of people involved in the state’s mining industry have said more needs to be done to make relocating an attractive proposition. Despite the huge salaries fly-in fly-out workers earn, most complain of having no work-life balance. FIFO workers typically have higher rates of suicide, struggle with depression due to long hours and loneliness and report higher rates of workplace bullying and alcoholism. In 2015, the West Australian government conducted a 10-month investigation into the state’s FIFO workforce. Lifeline WA admitted in October last year it still had no idea exactly how many FIFO workers were affected by mental illness or how many had committed suicide while away from their families to work in the state’s mines. Even the report issued after the lengthy investigation admitted “the inquiry struck several problem areas in relation to statistics”. “Clear data was difficult to find in the areas of: a definitive total number of workers employed in the Western Australia resources industry on a FIFO #Thousands, #mining, #jobs, #waiting, #WesternAustralia, #Aussies, #don’t, #want, #them #miningindustry, #mentalillness, #mentalhealth, #workersdying, #miningindustryaccounts, #flyinflyoutworkers, #Australiangovernment, #miningsector, #resourcesindustry, #Australiancompanies, #parttimework, #miningcompanies, #miningregion, #mentalhealthissues, #migrationagreement, #skilledmigrantsrequirement, #Companiestalk, #miningjobs, #worklifebalance, #suicidestatistics, #prevalencerate, #suiciderates, #crisispoint, #energysector, #productionsites, #skillsshortage, #problemareas, #WesternAustralia, #Australia, #AustraliaandNewZealand, #Oceania, #Queensland, #UniversityofWesternAustralia, #AustralianBureauofStatistics, #CommunityServices, #MentalHealthCommission, #ChamberofMineralsandEnergy, #PeterMiller, #PaulEveringham, #NatalieWolfe

The intent is to illustrate how state-of-the-art concepts can be applied in the state-of-the-practice. The process begins by understanding the design objective (including regulatory requirements) and investigating lines of evidence that a water balance cover is likely to function satisfactorily at the design location. Data from two other instrumented water balance covers in the region are used to evaluate efficacy along with historical meteorological data and information contained in a prior unsuccessful submittal for a water balance cover at the Missoula landfill. Site characterization is conducted to define properties of the soil resources and vegetation at the site for preliminary cover sizing and numerical modeling of the water balance. A numerical model is used with various design metrological conditions as input to evaluate whether the cover will meet the design goal under realistic conditions. The final design consists of a monolithic cover comprised of a 1.22-m storage layer overlain by a 0.15-m topsoil layer. A field test with a full instrumented lysimeter was constructed and monitored to confirm that the cover performs as anticipated in the design. About Craig H. Rethinking carbon capture and sequestration

01:04:33
Capturing CO2 and injecting it in the subsurface is often presented as a major tool to prevent man-made global warming. Several successful pilot projects on carbon sequestration have been carried. In order to assess the degree to which this technique can have an impact on mitigation of man-made global warming, one needs to consider the amount of CO2 that needs to be injected. This leads to a number of questions that must be answered before this carbon capture and sequestration can be used on a scale that actually makes a difference in preventing climate change. (1) How can the cost of this process be reduced from its projected cost of 150 billion dollars per year? (2) How can the capture and injection be up-scaled by a factor of 1000 beyond current capabilities? (3) How can we predict and monitor leakage? Many action alternative to carbon capture and sequestration likely to be much cheaper and save energy as well. This talk was presented on April 10, 2013 as part of the IHS Markit Seminar Series, co-sponsored with the Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences. Dr. Anders Sandberg — Making Minds Morally: the Research Ethics of Brain Emulation

20:38
Global Future 2045 Congress: Towards a New Strategy for Human Evolution / New York City, 2013 http://gf2045.com/ Dr. Anders Sandberg James Martin Research Fellow at the Future of Humanity Institute at Oxford University and Research Associate at the Oxford Neuroethics Center Abstract: This talk will outline some of the ethical considerations that will need to go into any project aiming at creating brain emulations. In the near future the main issue is the ethical treatment of virtual experimental animals under profound uncertainty about their true moral status. Applying a cautious approach suggests to use methods similar to existing animal welfare methods, but adapted to the peculiarities of software entities. In the mid-term, the case of human emulations raises a number of other ethical challenges, including informed consent, handling of flawed versions, time rate rights, vulnerability, and the change of identity and death. Finally, the long-term effects and importance of brain emulation will be discussed: are there ethical reasons that strongly speak against pursuing it at all, or equally strongly favor a push towards it? Dr. Anders Sandberg Cognitive Enhancement Theorist — Philosopher at the Future of Humanity Institute. Editor of the Whole Brain Emulation Roadmap. Investigated social and ethical impact of cognitive enhancement and feasibility of whole brain emulation. James Martin Research Fellow at the Future of Humanity Institute at Oxford University. Studies questions of human enhancement, emerging technologies, global catastrophic risks and applied epistemology. Computational Neuroscience degree from Stockholm University, on the modeling of memory systems. Joined Oxford University in 2006 in the ENHANCE project investigating human enhancement. Research Associate with the Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics, the Oxford Martin Programme on the Impacts of Future Technology and the Oxford Neuroethics Center. Scientific producer of a major neuroscience exhibition. Co-founder and writer for EU think tank Eudoxa. Regular noted participant in the international public debate on humanity's future.

Big data approaches to precision medicine

02:56
Olga Troyanskaya and her team have developed techniques to comb large collections of genomic and other data to make fundamental discoveries and identify new therapeutic targets. These “big data” methods can be applied to numerous disorders for which people can have genetic susceptibilities, from cancer and chronic kidney disease to autism and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s. Many of the disease-related genes previously identified have been found by analyzing the genomes of affected individuals and their families. While powerful, this approach generally reveals genes with a strong tie to the disease and can miss those that act together. This is a challenge for the study of autism, which has a strong genetic basis and may involve up to 1,000 genes. “It is like looking for your keys under the light post because that is the only place you have light,” said Troyanskaya, who is also appointed at the Simons Foundation’s Flatiron Institute. Big-data methods allow Troyanskaya’s team to search the entire genome, including noncoding regions that are not genes but rather regulate gene expression. In a study published in 2016 in the journal Nature Neuroscience, the team used these computational methods to identify roughly 2,500 genes that are likely linked to autism among the almost 26,000 known human genes. This vastly reduces the number of genes that need to be sequenced for quantitative genetic studies, Troyanskaya said. “Instead we can focus on the set of genes that are likely to be autism-related, so we can screen a lot more families or use this information to help interpret whole-genome studies,” she said. “This approach can allow us to find the ‘keys’ that are very far from the ‘light.’” That study leveraged what was known about autism-related genes to discover new ones, but Troyanskaya and her team have also created methodologies for searching for disease-related genomic factors even when no existing information is available. In a 2015 paper in Nature Methods, the researchers describe a deep-learning approach called DeepSEA that mines large data sets to predict the effects of mutations in the noncoding region of the genome. “We can use that information to give a single impact score that indicates whether or not a mutation appears to be a human-disease mutation and whether it is likely to be functional,” Troyanskaya said. ~ Confirmed ~ Cancer Deaths Linked to Water Fluoridation - Dr. Dean Burk

05:35
"When you have power you don't have to tell the truth. That's a rule that's been working in this world for generations. And there are a great many people who don't tell the truth when they are in power in administrative positions." ---Dr. Dean Burk former head of National Cancer Institute Research This interview was recorded live in Holland in the 1970′s, and as a result of it being broadcast, 100,000 people took to the streets and had fluoride removed immediately. In Dr. Dean Burk's own words; "this amounts to public murder on a grand scale, it is a public crime, it would be, to put fluoride in the drinking water of people". Dr. Dean Burk co-authored one of the most frequently cited papers in the history of biochemistry, "The Determination of Enzyme Dissociation Constants," published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society in 1934. In 1937, Dean became a co-founder of the US National Cancer Institute (NCI), and headed its Cytochemistry department for over three decades. Dean was initially skeptical that there was any link between fluoridation and cancer but later came to believe ardently that fluoride was a major carcinogen, responsible for tens of thousands of deaths per year. With his NCI credentials, he was the most impressive witness the anti-fluoridation forces around the world had. Needless to say, this role did not endear him to the public health establishment, which fought for its right to medicate the entire public with fluoride in the public drinking water in the name of preventing tooth decay among children. Using JMP® Scripts to Analyze Process Impact of Raw Material Variability

30:42
At Genentech's Vacaville manufacturing facility, a programmatic lot trace with comparison to key performance indicators (KPI) in a JMP script was developed to facilitate analyzing the impact of different lots of raw materials. By incorporating this analysis in our routine process monitoring, the impact of raw material variations can be tracked over time, and their effect on our production process can be further quantified, leading to quicker troubleshooting and preventing potential yield loss. Plan B -- is there an alternative to economic growth?: Miklós Antal at TEDxDanubia 2014

15:17
Miklós Antal, ecological economist, is a postdoctoral researcher at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. He now studies macroeconomic aspects of sustainability transitions. Previously he was engaged in energy modeling at the Central European University in Budapest. He got his PhD in economics and MSc in engineering-physics at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. His multidisciplinary research interests are reflected by a number of publications in respected scientific journals, both in natural and social sciences. His commitment to sustainability is not restricted to academic life, he is the scientist who also "walks the talk": his cell phone was hip ten years ago, he avoids flying (which can be a challenging principle to follow at times) and actively encourages his environment to explore the joys of green living. Antal Miklós a Barcelonai Autonóm Egyetem posztdoktori ösztöndíjas kutatója. Jelenleg a környezeti fenntarthatóság makroökonómiai aspektusait vizsgálja. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. Origins of the Military-Industrial Complex

56:06
Daniel Else explored the results of his year-long inquiry into the organizational underpinnings of that military technological revolution of the 1940s and 1950s. By mining the Library's resources, Else traced the evolving relationship between science and the federal government leading to the creation of the Office of Scientific Research and Development (OSRD) in 1941. A temporary wartime agency, OSRD mobilized the nation's academic and industrial technological resources in support of the war effort, and in so doing profoundly altered the linkages between science and engineering, industry, and government. Else explored those wartime changes and outline their impact, still seen and felt today more than seven decades after V-J Day. Speaker Biography: Daniel Else was a specialist in national defense in the Congressional Research Service in the Library of Congress and the 2016 Kluge Staff Fellow at the Library's John W. Kluge Center. For transcript and more information, visit http://www.loc.gov/today/cyberlc/feature_wdesc.php?rec=8278

The Purpose of CrossFit: Part 2

25:14
Originally published in the CrossFit Journal May 15, 2011. Click here for Part 1: http://youtu.be/xwK4cPNL19I In this two-part video, CrossFit founder and CEO Greg Glassman explains the purpose of his program. Fitness throughout life is health, and the CrossFit community is leading the way toward transforming the world's view of health and people's ability to achieve it. "CrossFit is constantly varied, high-intensity functional movement," says Glassman. At Reebok CrossFit One, Glassman defines CrossFit and fitness and discusses the direction CrossFit is headed. Part 1 will be familiar to those who have been to a Level 1 seminar. It is the classic explanation of what CrossFit is. Glassman also defines fitness and explains the models used to measure it. Glassman says CrossFit is successful because it's hard—that is the nature of intensity and why so many other programs lack intensity. "Successful people pursue hard things. Unsuccessful avoid them," he says. Part 2 takes that original explanation and looks toward the future. Glassman describes his "eureka moment": finding that the area under the power-duration curve was the first "scientifically rigorous" measurement of fitness and encompassed all the other models perfectly. It can even be used to measure health. "Your fitness is a snapshot of your health," Glassman says. CrossFit HQ has begun a massive endeavor to collect a wide variety of relevant health, fitness and business metrics through the affiliates and the global community. That data will be analyzed by scientists and physicians who will be looking to find best practices by answering this question: "Which of these things is causal, which is correlative?"
