Forging Success Personal PEST Analysis

04:41
Now that you have considered your buddy for this, it's time to a powerful exercise that will set you up nicely for the second module. This is a PEST analysis. You may have come across this in business, because normally a PEST analysis is used in analysing your business to form a new strategy. Well, we use it here for your personal strategy. Because, after all, that's exactly what forging success is... it's HOW you are going to achieve your success. One of the important things about preparing to achieve your breakthroughs towards your success is genuinely understanding the impact of the external environment. What is happening in the outside world does have an impact on you. Many of these things, you cannot control. So lets objectively consider them . This will help you shape your future plans with these factors and potential factors in mind. PEST stands for Political, Economic, Social and Technological environmental factors. You can also add Legal to this. Why do this? Well, let's consider the political environment in your part of the world. If your goal is to become president or prime minister, then there are obvious implications. But what about the politics at your work? I have worked with many clients whose careers are seemingly stagnating because they simply don't like to "play politics". And the career ladder appears to only be open to a select few. But remember as you consider these factors, to be objective. And think of alternatives that may work around politics that really are there. Economic factors. I think about half of my coaching clients have expressed a desire to be financial independent. A place where they have paid off their debts and can choose to go on an exotic extended holiday or sabbatical or buy a sports car. But what about the global economy? In the past few years we've experienced a long and deep recession across the world. Perhaps your success goal has a risk side from the global, or local economic perspective. Again, we're looking to identify possible issues and opportunities. Social matters. Does your goal fit with the society in which you live? Have you ever felt that you haven't achieved success because, well, "they" weren't ready for it? And technological factors. How does changing technology affect you and your future goals? Let me share my own example. A couple of years ago, I decided that I would publish my book "What's Better Today?" Politics didn't really play a big part for me but it was during the global recession, and people spend less on books and development during a recession. Was society ready for this type of book? How did I need to write it for them? Was it acceptable, workable, publishable? There are some things that changed because I am based in Singapore, getting a book published and to my market in Singapore, that was costly since most publishing is in the US. Technologically, well I could overcome many of the printed publishing barriers because the technology to publish an ebook was there -- and I wanted it to be an ebook. One where you can click on the links to my workbook exercises. But then society, or at least a large part of my normal target market, don't like ebooks. They want a printed copy. To fast forward a little, this PEST process helped me prepare to learn how to publish on kindle, epub and printed versions (and believe me, it is three different processes). For printed, page layout and numbering matters, for kindle, flow of text matters and so on and so forth. Using this structure, you will begin to identify external barriers, potential pitfalls and issues and be thinking of ways to overcome them or get around them as you plan. Oh. And the best part of this exercise. It takes away your excuses. Use the workbook to and coaching game pictures to identify anything that may have a real impact on your success.

Krushi Vaidya - Smart System for Early Detection of Plant Diseases and Pest Infestation

03:05
Smart System for Early Detection of Plant Diseases and Pest Infestation Agriculture is not only food provider for human existence, but also a big source for the economy of the country. A large portion of the government budget is being spent for the agriculture sector in order to safeguard the crops. Insects and pests are dangerous for the overall growth of the crop. One method to protect the crop is early detection of crop disease and pest infestation. Regular monitoring of the crop is the best method to know about the health of the crop. If disease and pests are detected at early stages of the crop growth, appropriate measures can be taken to protect the crop and thus avoid crop losses. Also, it would be helpful for minimizing the usage of the pesticides. The process of examining the crop for disease and pest infestation is very expensive and time consuming. Hence, an automated technological solution is required to examine the crops for disease and pest infestation and then classify the type of disease and pests affecting the crops. One such possible solution is computer vision technique for analyzing the digital images of different parts of plant namely leaves, stem, flower and fruits. To address the problem, we propose a smart system for early detection of plant diseases and pest infestation using computer vision and Wireless Sensor Networks. The proposed system is implemented using machine learning algorithms. The domain knowledge is gathered from agricultural experts. Work Plan 1) Crop registration on web portal along with farmer and field information. 2) Farmer captures digital images of different parts of plant namely leaves, stem, flower and fruits. 3) Digital images of plant parts are uploaded to the proposed system from his / her smart phone for identification of diseases and pests. 4) Uploaded plant digital images are processed by the machine learning algorithm on server for identification of diseases and pests. 5) Decisions support system recommends the pesticide and application method depending upon the type of disease and pest. 6) Notification sent to farmers mobile by various means such as mobile app, SMS or web app along with recommendations to mitigate the problem for better crop management.

Improving phytosanitary systems to boost safe trade and market access

05:25
This video shows the outcomes of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) Phytosanitary Capacity Evaluation project funded by The Standards and Trade Development Facility (STDF 401 project). More: https://www.ippc.int/en/pce/ To protect plants from pests, it is essential to have strong national phytosanitary systems in place. National plant protection organizations are responsible for implementing the International Plant Protection Convention or IPPC and its Standards. The IPPC provides the framework for concrete technical assistance to countries using the IPPC Phytosanitary Capacity Evaluation tool, also known as the PCE. So what is the PCE? The Phytosanitary capacity Evaluation or PCE is a management tool designed to help a country identify its strengths and gaps in its existing and planned phytosanitary systems. The strategic plans developed through PCEs provide the basis for dialogue with donors, improving the likelihood of accessing funding and strengthening phytosanitary systems. The PCE tool is implemented through consensus, it is confidential. To date, 121 countries in 7 regions have benefitted from the PCE. Reviews of the PCE show their positive impacts. For example, in April 2017, Comoros applied the PCE tool, which resulted in the Parliament adopting new phytosanitary legislation. Combined with a new phytosanitary capacity development strategy, Comoros is improving its market access and food security, protecting its agricultural production and the environment. They are also attracting donors in the process. Comoros relies on imports, which are now sources for the introduction of plant diseases. Bananas, coconut palms, cassava and cash crops were attacked many times over the past decade. This poses a threat to food security and to the country's economy. With the support of its partners, including the STDF, the United Nations Development Programme and the International Plant Protection Convention, our country has updated its sanitary and phytosanitary legislation. It was important for us to support this law, which we unanimously adopted to ensure the well-being of our people. This PCE project was financed by the Standard and Trade Development Facility or STDF. The PCE builds the capacities of National Plant Protection Organizations to implement IPPC standards. It aligns with the STDF objective to increase countries’ abilities to trade safely. The STDF continues to actively support the PCE tool. Since 2012 it has funded a project to train PCE facilitators and lawyers, which helped countries to strengthen their phytosanitary systems. The PCE project, known as STDF 401, trained national experts to conduct PCE in countries. 40 PCE facilitators and more than 20 lawyers were trained as a result of this project. The intensive training entailed a better understanding of the IPPC and its standards, logical framework analysis and results-based management tools. In addition, the project resulted in the development of training materials. Chiluba Mwape was one of the PCE facilitators. What did he gain from the training? First, let me point out it was so helpful to conduct the training first it was group management and presentation skills. These aspects were effectively applied in order to ensure that the participants of the training were all actively engaged and understood what they were doing, and besides that the knowledge that we gained with regards to understanding of the IPPC as well as the PCE process enabled me to deliver the presentations as required. PCE facilitators are now able to share their expertise in any country, and to support the noble mission of protecting plants from pests and making the world a better place. If you would like to conduct a PCE in your country, you can contact the IPPC for more information and visit the dedicated webpages: www.ippc.int/en/pce/ http://www.standardsfacility.org/ Credits: The Standards and Trade Development Facility The Government of Comoros All PCE facilitators and lawyers All trainers and service providers in the project Subscribe! http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=FAOoftheUN Follow #UNFAO on social media! * Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/UNFAO * Google+ - https://plus.google.com/+UNFAO * Instagram - https://instagram.com/unfao/ * LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/fao * Twitter - http://www.twitter.com/faoknowledge © FAO: http://www.fao.org
