The Wisdom of Mark Twain - Famous Quotes

10:01
Mark Twain quotes and sayings. Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer. Well know for his famous quotes. Among his novels are The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), the latter often called "The Great American Novel". Twain was raised in Hannibal, Missouri, which later provided the setting for Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. He served an apprenticeship with a printer and then worked as a typesetter, contributing articles to the newspaper of his older brother Orion Clemens. He later became a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River before heading west to join Orion in Nevada. He referred humorously to his lack of success at mining, turning to journalism for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise. In 1865, his humorous story "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" was published, based on a story that he heard at Angels Hotel in Angels Camp, California where he had spent some time as a miner. The short story brought international attention and was even translated into classic Greek. His wit and satire, in prose and in speech, earned praise from critics and peers, and he was a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty. Twain earned a great deal of money from his writings and lectures, but he invested in ventures that lost most of it—notably the Paige Compositor, a mechanical typesetter that failed because of its complexity and imprecision. He filed for bankruptcy in the wake of these financial setbacks, but he eventually overcame his financial troubles with the help of Henry Huttleston Rogers. He chose to pay all his pre-bankruptcy creditors in full, even though he had no legal responsibility to do so. Twain was born shortly after an appearance of Halley's Comet, and he predicted that he would "go out with it" as well; he died the day after the comet returned. He was lauded as the "greatest American humorist of his age", and William Faulkner called him "the father of American literature". Here are some of his famous and not so famous quotes and wisdom. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Funny, Silly and Stupid Signs" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7uTiyF97Ys -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Books, Videos, and Articles: What are They Good for Anyway?

03:36
[Title] Books, Videos, and Articles: What are They Good for Anyway? There are many different types of resources, such as books, articles, and videos, and they can be either in a physical format or an electronic format. In any database, including MultiSearch, you may find any or all of these resource types. Each of them provides a certain kind of information. Look at your assignment to determine what specific types of resources you may require. Let’s look at books and ebooks first. They can be a great starting point for background reading because they often provide an overview of your topic. Books can help you to understand how your topic is structured, and what other topics may be related to it. It’s easy to identify books in your MultiSearch results list by the image of the book’s cover and the word “book” under the image. In order to find a physical book in the library, you need to know its Call Number, which is the number on the spine of the book that shows which campus library it’s in, and its shelf location. Ebooks will have a link in MultiSearch that takes you to the entire book online. The library offers DVDs as well as streamed video. They provide a visual representation of your topic and may be useful for presentations. Depending on your learning style, you may find it helpful to watch a video and listen to its discussion of your topic. Some streamed videos have closed captioning, and some offer a transcript as well. In MultiSearch, you can identify video resources by the words “Video Recording” under the image. If you see the words “Online Access,” you’ll know that the video is available as streamed video. You can click on the Online Access link to view it. Articles are found in different types of publications, such as magazines, newspapers, and academic journals. Each of these may be found in a physical or electronic format. Each type of article has unique features and is best used for specific purposes. Scholarly articles are published in scholarly or academic journals. Each journal is focused on a specific subject or field of study. Often the title of the publication describes its content, for example the Journal of Applied Psychology. Scholarly or academic journal articles are written by experts in a certain field, and the articles may have been reviewed by other experts prior to publication. They often use technical language that is specific to the field of study, and focus on a very narrow topic. Newspaper articles are good for finding current information or reports that were written soon after events occurred. They tend to be brief and are written in a simple, readable style. Trade magazines and journals are published for a specific industry or profession and contain articles relevant to that field. They are good sources for overviews of issues and trends, identifying groups or associations, and for finding related advertising and industry contacts. Popular magazines are good sources for overviews of issues and current events. They tend to appeal to a wide audience, and are often considered to be entertainment. In MultiSearch, each type of article will have a specific image and corresponding label beside it. Scholarly articles are labeled as “Academic Journal,” popular and trade articles are both labeled as “Periodical,” and newspaper articles as “News.” When you’re researching, remember to look for the specific types of resources that your assignment may require, and remember that each resource type is best at providing a certain kind of information on your topic.

George Orwell: 1984, Quotes, Biography, Books, Early Life, Facts, History, Writing Style (2001)

57:24
Eric Arthur Blair (25 June 1903 – 21 January 1950), who used the pen name George Orwell, was an English novelist, essayist, journalist and critic. About the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0393322637/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0393322637&linkCode=as2&tag=tra0c7-20&linkId=64c93e62e5b668800667152617ac237a His work is marked by lucid prose, awareness of social injustice, opposition to totalitarianism, and commitment to democratic socialism. Orwell wrote literary criticism, poetry, fiction, and polemical journalism. He is best known for the dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949) and the allegorical novella Animal Farm (1945). His non-fiction works, including The Road to Wigan Pier (1937), documenting his experience of working class life in the north of England, and Homage to Catalonia (1938), an account of his experiences in the Spanish Civil War, are widely acclaimed, as are his essays on politics, literature, language, and culture. In 2008, The Times ranked him second on a list of "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945".[4] Orwell's work continues to influence popular and political culture, and the term Orwellian—descriptive of totalitarian or authoritarian social practices—has entered the language together with several of his neologisms, including cold war, Big Brother, Thought Police, Room 101, doublethink, and thoughtcrime. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Orwell Nineteen Eighty-Four, sometimes published as 1984, is a dystopian novel by English author George Orwell published in 1949.[1][2] The novel is set in Airstrip One (formerly known as Great Britain), a province of the superstate Oceania in a world of perpetual war, omnipresent government surveillance and public manipulation, dictated by a political system euphemistically named English Socialism (or Ingsoc in the government's invented language, Newspeak) under the control of a privileged Inner Party elite, that persecutes individualism and independent thinking as "thoughtcrimes".[3] The tyranny is epitomised by Big Brother, the quasi-divine Party leader who enjoys an intense cult of personality but who may not even exist. The Party "seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power."[4] The protagonist of the novel, Winston Smith, is a member of the Outer Party, who works for the Ministry of Truth (or Minitrue), which is responsible for propaganda and historical revisionism. His job is to rewrite past newspaper articles, so that the historical record always supports the party line.[5] Smith is a diligent and skillful worker but he secretly hates the Party and dreams of rebellion against Big Brother. As literary political fiction and dystopian science-fiction, Nineteen Eighty-Four is a classic novel in content, plot and style. Many of its terms and concepts, such as Big Brother, doublethink, thoughtcrime, Newspeak, Room 101, telescreen, 2 + 2 = 5 and memory hole, have entered everyday use since its publication in 1949. Nineteen Eighty-Four popularised the adjective Orwellian, which describes official deception, secret surveillance and manipulation of recorded history by a totalitarian or authoritarian state.[5] In 2005, the novel was chosen by TIME magazine as one of the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to 2005.[6] It was awarded a place on both lists of Modern Library 100 Best Novels, reaching number 13 on the editor's list, and 6 on the readers' list.[7] In 2003, the novel was listed at number 8 on the BBC's survey The Big Read.[8] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nineteen_Eighty-Four

The Federalist Papers Explained: Authors, Hamilton, Important Quotes, Summary (2000)

57:22
The Federalist Papers is a collection of 85 articles and essays written (under the pseudonym Publius) by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay promoting the ratification of the United States Constitution. About the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00486U8MC/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B00486U8MC&linkCode=as2&tag=ub066-20&linkId=62307a5e603abb32c5347629e6ae43e3 Seventy-seven were published serially in The Independent Journal and The New York Packet between October 1787 and August 1788. A compilation of these and eight others, called The Federalist: A Collection of Essays, Written in Favour of the New Constitution, as Agreed upon by the Federal Convention, September 17, 1787, was published in two volumes in 1788 by J. and A. McLean.[1] The collection's original title was The Federalist; the title The Federalist Papers did not emerge until the 20th century. Though the authors of The Federalist Papers foremost wished to influence the vote in favor of ratifying the Constitution, in Federalist No. 1 they explicitly set that debate in broader political terms: It has been frequently remarked, that it seems to have been reserved to the people of this country, by their conduct and example, to decide the important question, whether societies of men are really capable or not, of establishing good government from reflection and choice, or whether they are forever destined to depend, for their political constitutions, on accident and force.[2] Federalist No. 10, in which Madison discusses the means of preventing rule by majority faction and advocates a large, commercial republic, is generally regarded as the most important of the 85 articles from a philosophical perspective; it is complemented by Federalist No. 14, in which Madison takes the measure of the United States, declares it appropriate for an extended republic, and concludes with a memorable defense of the constitutional and political creativity of the Federal Convention.[3] In Federalist No. 84, Hamilton makes the case that there is no need to amend the Constitution by adding a Bill of Rights, insisting that the various provisions in the proposed Constitution protecting liberty amount to a "bill of rights". Federalist No. 78, also written by Hamilton, lays the groundwork for the doctrine of judicial review by federal courts of federal legislation or executive acts. Federalist No. 70 presents Hamilton's case for a one-man chief executive. In Federalist No. 39, Madison presents the clearest exposition of what has come to be called "Federalism". In Federalist No. 51, Madison distills arguments for checks and balances in an essay often quoted for its justification of government as "the greatest of all reflections on human nature." According to historian Richard B. Morris, they are an "incomparable exposition of the Constitution, a classic in political science unsurpassed in both breadth and depth by the product of any later American writer." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Federalist_Papers

F.A. Hayek: Biography, Economics, Road to Serfdom, Quotes, Books, Nobel Prize (2001)

56:35
Friedrich Hayek CH (German: [ˈfʁiːdʁɪç ˈaʊ̯ɡʊst ˈhaɪ̯ɛk]; 8 May 1899 – 23 March 1992), born in Austria-Hungary as Friedrich August von Hayek and frequently referred to as F. A. Hayek, was an Austrian and British economist and philosopher. About the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0312233442/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0312233442&linkCode=as2&tag=tra0c7-20&linkId=0608a1f10a8a4bb3ca7ba306ce906239 He is best known for his defence of classical liberalism. Hayek shared the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences with Gunnar Myrdal for his "pioneering work in the theory of money and economic fluctuations and ... penetrating analysis of the interdependence of economic, social and institutional phenomena".[1] Hayek was a major social theorist and political philosopher of the twentieth century,[2][3] and his account of how changing prices communicate information which enables individuals to co-ordinate their plans is widely regarded as an important achievement in economics.[4] Hayek served in World War I and said that his experience in the war and his desire to help avoid the mistakes that had led to the war led him to his career. Hayek lived in Austria, Great Britain, the United States and Germany, and became a British subject in 1938. He spent most of his academic life at the London School of Economics (LSE), the University of Chicago, and the University of Freiburg. In 1984, he was appointed a member of the Order of the Companions of Honour by Queen Elizabeth II on the advice of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher for his "services to the study of economics".[5] He was the first recipient of the Hanns Martin Schleyer Prize in 1984.[6] He also received the US Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1991 from President George H. W. Bush.[7] In 2011, his article "The Use of Knowledge in Society" was selected as one of the top 20 articles published in The American Economic Review during its first 100 years. Friedrich August von Hayek was born in Vienna to August von Hayek and Felicitas née von Juraschek. Friedrich's father, from whom he received his middle name, was also born in Vienna in 1871. He was a medical doctor employed by the municipal ministry of health, with passion in botany, in which he wrote a number of monographs. August von Hayek was also a part-time botany lecturer at the University of Vienna. Friedrich's mother was born in 1875 to a wealthy, conservative, land-owning family. As her mother died several years prior to Friedrich's birth, Felicitas gained a significant inheritance which provided as much as half of her and August's income during the early years of their marriage. Hayek was the oldest of three brothers, Heinrich (1990–69) and Erich (1904–86), who were one-and-a-half and five years younger than him.[9] His father's career as a university professor influenced Friedrich's goals later in life.[10] Both of his grandfathers, who lived long enough for Friedrich to know them, were scholars. Franz von Juraschek was a leading economist in Austria-Hungary and a close friend of Eugen Böhm von Bawerk, one of the founders of the Austrian School of Economics. Von Juraschek was a statistician and was later employed by the Austrian government. Friedrich's paternal gradfather, Gustav Edler von Hayek, taught natural sciences at the Imperial Realobergymnasium (secondary school) in Vienna. He wrote systematic works in biology, some of which are relatively well known.[11] On his mother's side, Hayek was second cousin to the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein. His mother often played with Wittgenstein's sisters, and had known Ludwig well. As a result of their family relationship, Hayek became one of the first to read Wittgenstein's Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus when the book was published in its original German edition in 1921. Although Hayek met Wittgenstein on only a few occasions, Hayek said that Wittgenstein's philosophy and methods of analysis had a profound influence on his own life and thought.[12] In his later years, Hayek recalled a discussion of philosophy with Wittgenstein, when both were officers during World War I.[13] After Wittgenstein's death, Hayek had intended to write a biography of Wittgenstein and worked on collecting family materials; and he later assisted biographers of Wittgenstein.[14] At his father's suggestion, Hayek, as a teenager, read the genetic and evolutionary works of Hugo de Vries and the philosophical works of Ludwig Feuerbach.[15] In school Hayek was much taken by one instructor's lectures on Aristotle's ethics. In 1917, Hayek joined an artillery regiment in the Austro-Hungarian Army and fought on the Italian front. Much of Hayek's combat experience was spent as a spotter in an aeroplane. Hayek suffered damage to his hearing in his left ear during the war,[16] and was decorated for bravery. During this time Hayek also survived the 1918 flu pandemic. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friedrich_Hayek

Thoughts and Quotes that Inspire Confidence 227

06:45
To read the article from which this video presentation is made, please click on this link: http://wp.me/p3atD-93I Below is a brief excerpt from the article: "Recently I changed my Facebook Cover photo. In this picture I included a quote that has been and continues to be an encouragement and a source of inspiration. I have shared this quote in many of the articles that I wrote and published on Second Chance to Live in the early years. The quote: "If you advance confidently in the direction of your dreams and endeavor to live the life that you have imagined...you will meet with a success unexpected in common hours." Henry David Thoreau I have been thinking about the quote and the words, "If you advance confidently in the direction..." The word "if" speaks to me in that I have to be committed to the process. If I do not commit myself to the process, my journey will end. Through being committed to process, a door continues to stay open to me. The word "advance" reminds me to take action, to continue to take action. Action, that is intentional and focused. With reference to another word in the quote, I have been doing research on the word confidently. One body of thought is that confidence occurs over a period of time with repeated attempts and successes. Confidence building is therefore an ongoing process. Advancing confidently implies that I not give up in the face of seeming discouragement, setbacks or adversity."

How to Paraphrase in Research Papers (APA, AMA)

11:07
Researchers must often discuss other studies for a variety of reasons: to provide background information, review current scientific knowledge, bolster their own studies with evidence, and compare methods, results, or other sections with their own study, among other reasons. One great way to present previously published information without risking plagiarism is by paraphrasing. “Paraphrasing” means expressing the meaning of someone else’s words in your own words instead of quoting directly. The necessity of this becomes clear when you consider how much information in one section (or even one sentence) of a research paper that may be irrelevant to your study. You can thus save space and keep your study more focused by choosing only the necessary parts for your paper; you can distill complex information into language that general readers can understand by re-writing a passage your own words. This video includes: ✔ An explanation of what paraphrasing is and why you need to use it in your paper ✔ A detailed breakdown of how include original work using paraphrasing and quotes ✔ Samples of real research papers to demonstrate proper and effective methods of paraphrasing ✔ General tips on what to remember when paraphrasing in your paper For more useful writing tips, check out these posts on our “Resources” page: Paraphrasing "CHEATSHEET" for quick reference: http://wordvice-wp-static.s3-ap-northeast-1.amazonaws.com/uploads/2018/04/Paraphrasing-Quick-Guide-.pdf “How to Write the Best Journal Submissions Cover Letter" https://wordvice.com/journal-submissi... “100+ Strong Verbs That Will Make Your Research Writing Amazing” https://wordvice.com/recommended-verbs-for-research-writing/ “How to Write an Abstract” https://wordvice.com/how-to-write-a-research-paper-abstract/ “Which Tense to Use in Your Absract” https://wordvice.com/which-tense-should-be-used-in-abstracts-past-or-present/ Wordvice Journal Submissions Page https://wordvice.com/category/journal... John Stuart Mill: Biography, Quotes, Beliefs, Economics, Education, Philosophy (2004)

56:24
John Stuart Mill (20 May 1806 – 8 May 1873) was an English philosopher, political economist, feminist, and civil servant. One of the most influential thinkers in the history of liberalism, he contributed widely to social theory, political theory and political economy. He has been called "the most influential English-speaking philosopher of the nineteenth century." Mill's conception of liberty justified the freedom of the individual in opposition to unlimited state control. Mill was a proponent of utilitarianism, an ethical theory developed by his predecessor Jeremy Bentham, and contributed significantly to the theory of the scientific method. A member of the Liberal Party, he was the first Member of Parliament to call for women's suffrage. His father's work, The History of British India was published in 1818; immediately thereafter, about the age of twelve, Mill began a thorough study of the scholastic logic, at the same time reading Aristotle's logical treatises in the original language. In the following year he was introduced to political economy and studied Adam Smith and David Ricardo with his father, ultimately completing their classical economic view of factors of production. Mill's comptes rendus of his daily economy lessons helped his father in writing Elements of Political Economy in 1821, a textbook to promote the ideas of Ricardian economics; however, the book lacked popular support.[10] Ricardo, who was a close friend of his father, used to invite the young Mill to his house for a walk in order to talk about political economy. At the age of fourteen, Mill stayed a year in France with the family of Sir Samuel Bentham, brother of Jeremy Bentham. The mountain scenery he saw led to a lifelong taste for mountain landscapes. The lively and friendly way of life of the French also left a deep impression on him. In Montpellier, he attended the winter courses on chemistry, zoology, logic of the Faculté des Sciences, as well as taking a course of the higher mathematics. While coming and going from France, he stayed in Paris for a few days in the house of the renowned economist Jean-Baptiste Say, a friend of Mill's father. There he met many leaders of the Liberal party, as well as other notable Parisians, including Henri Saint-Simon. Mill went through months of sadness and pondered suicide at twenty years of age. According to the opening paragraphs of Chapter V, of his autobiography, he had asked himself whether the creation of a just society, his life's objective, would actually make him happy. His heart answered "no" and unsurprisingly, he lost the happiness of striving towards this objective. Eventually, the poetry of William Wordsworth showed him beauty generates compassion for others and stimulates joy. [2] With renewed joy, he continued to work towards a just society, but with more relish for the journey. He considered this one of the most pivotal shifts in his thinking. In fact, many of the differences between him and his father stemmed from this expanded source of joy. Mill had been engaged in a pen-friendship with Auguste Comte, the founder of positivism and sociology, since Mill first contacted Comte in November 1841. Comte's sociologie was more an early philosophy of science than we perhaps know it today, and the positive philosophy aided in Mill's broad rejection of Benthamism.[11] As a nonconformist who refused to subscribe to the Thirty-Nine Articles of the Church of England, Mill was not eligible to study at the University of Oxford or the University of Cambridge.[12] Instead he followed his father to work for the East India Company, and attended University College, London, to hear the lectures of John Austin, the first Professor of Jurisprudence.[13] He was elected a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1856.[14] Mill's career as a colonial administrator at the British East India Company spanned from when he was 17 years old in 1823 until 1858, when the Company was abolished in favor of direct rule by the British crown over India. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Stuart_Mill

Seventy-seven of the essays were published serially in The Independent Journal and The New York Packet between October 1787 and August 1788 . A compilation of these and eight others, called The Federalist, was published in 1788 by J. and A. M'Lean. The Federalist Papers serve as a primary source for interpretation of the Constitution, as they outline the philosophy and motivation of the proposed system of government. The authors of the Federalist Papers wanted to both influence the vote in favor of ratification and shape future interpretations of the Constitution. According to historian Richard Morris, they are an "incomparable exposition of the Constitution, a classic in political science unsurpassed in both breadth and depth by the product of any later American writer." Carl Sagan: His Life, Writings and Scientific Work - Quotes, Cosmos (1999)

01:09:09
Carl Edward Sagan (/ˈseɪɡən/; November 9, 1934 – December 20, 1996) was an American astronomer, astrophysicist, cosmologist, author, science popularizer, and science communicator in astronomy and other natural sciences. His contributions were central to the discovery of the high surface temperatures of Venus. However, he is best known for his contributions to the scientific research of extraterrestrial life, including experimental demonstration of the production of amino acids from basic chemicals by radiation. Sagan assembled the first physical messages that were sent into space: the Pioneer plaque and the Voyager Golden Record, universal messages that could potentially be understood by any extraterrestrial intelligence that might find them. He published more than 600 scientific papers[2] and articles and was author, co-author or editor of more than 20 books. Sagan is known for many of his popular science books, such as The Dragons of Eden, Broca's Brain and Pale Blue Dot, and for the award-winning 1980 television series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, which he narrated and co-wrote. The most widely watched series in the history of American public television, Cosmos has been seen by at least 500 million people across 60 different countries.[3] The book Cosmos was published to accompany the series. He also wrote the science fiction novel Contact, the basis for a 1997 film of the same name. Sagan always advocated scientific skeptical inquiry and the scientific method, pioneered exobiology and promoted the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI). He spent most of his career as a professor of astronomy at Cornell University, where he directed the Laboratory for Planetary Studies. Sagan and his works received numerous awards and honors, including the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal, the National Academy of Sciences Public Welfare Medal, the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction for his book The Dragons of Eden, and, regarding Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, two Emmy Awards, the Peabody Award and the Hugo Award. He married three times and had five children. After suffering from myelodysplasia, Sagan died of pneumonia at the age of 62 on December 20, 1996. The 1997 movie Contact, based on Sagan's novel of the same name and finished after his death, ends with the dedication "For Carl". His photo can also be seen at 59:25 in the film. In 1997 the Sagan Planet Walk was opened in Ithaca, New York. It is a walking-scale model of the Solar System, extending 1.2 km from the center of The Commons in downtown Ithaca to the Sciencenter, a hands-on museum. The exhibition was created in memory of Carl Sagan, who was an Ithaca resident and Cornell Professor. Professor Sagan had been a founding member of the museum's advisory board.[99] The landing site of the unmanned Mars Pathfinder spacecraft was renamed the Carl Sagan Memorial Station on July 5, 1997. Asteroid 2709 Sagan is named in his honor. Sagan's son, Nick Sagan, wrote several episodes in the Star Trek franchise. In an episode of Star Trek: Enterprise entitled "Terra Prime", a quick shot is shown of the relic rover Sojourner, part of the Mars Pathfinder mission, placed by a historical marker at Carl Sagan Memorial Station on the Martian surface. The marker displays a quote from Sagan: "Whatever the reason you're on Mars, I'm glad you're there, and I wish I was with you." Sagan's student Steve Squyres led the team that landed the rovers Spirit and Opportunity successfully on Mars in 2004. On November 9, 2001, on what would have been Sagan's 67th birthday, the Ames Research Center dedicated the site for the Carl Sagan Center for the Study of Life in the Cosmos. "Carl was an incredible visionary, and now his legacy can be preserved and advanced by a 21st century research and education laboratory committed to enhancing our understanding of life in the universe and furthering the cause of space exploration for all time", said NASA Administrator Daniel Goldin. Ann Druyan was at the Center as it opened its doors on October 22, 2006. Sagan has at least three awards named in his honor: The Carl Sagan Memorial Award presented jointly since 1997 by the American Astronomical Society and The Planetary Society, The Carl Sagan Medal for Excellence in Public Communication in Planetary Science presented since 1998 by the American Astronomical Society's Division for Planetary Sciences (AAS/DPS) for outstanding communication by an active planetary scientist to the general public—Carl Sagan was one of the original organizing committee members of the DPS, and The Carl Sagan Award for Public Understanding of Science presented by the Council of Scientific Society Presidents (CSSP)—Sagan was the first recipient of the CSSP award in 1993. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Sagan

Wisdom of Mark Twain - Famous Quotes - Revised 2019

10:16
The original video was published October of 2009. I re-did the music and converted the video to HD. I like it a lot better than the original.

Nikola Tesla on Women - Why He Never Married

11:25
Nikola Tesla interview for a newspaper, showed his views on women and why he never married. Even though he was alive over 100 years ago, the observations he made on the deteriorating nature of women seem to have gone its full course, meaning that the article certainly would not be published today. We are the unfortunate men who are forced to deal with Tesla’s disturbingly accurate predictions. Nikola Tesla was a graet inventor, electrical engineer, mechanical engineer, physicist, and futurist who is best known for his contributions to the to the design of the modern alternating current (AC) electricity supply system. Welcome to ContentDJ. After you sign up, you will be taken to the Content page. This page displays a list of articles. These articles are sourced from across the web and organized by topics or hashtags. For each article, you will see an article card. The article card displays the title of the article, the domain where it’s from, the time when it was first published, and the hashtag associated with it. At the left hand corner of an article card, you will see a score. This is the ContentDJ score. It takes into account how many times the articles has been shared across social channels, how fresh it is and who has already shared it. Articles with higher score tend to generate more engagement on social media. Articles on this page are sorted by this score. So, you can quickly discover the most engaging ones. In addition, you can discover articles that are trending now, trending today or trending this week. After you have signed up, ContentDJ automatically presents you with a default list of hashtags. These hashtags are used for gathering articles by topics. To edit hashtags, simply click on the My Hashtags link and click on Edit. From here, you can remove the default hashtags, or add new ones. Principles of economics, translated

05:21
"Mankiw's 10 principles of economics, translated for the uninitiated", by Yoram Bauman, http://www.standupeconomist.com . Presented at the AAAS humor session, February 16, 2007. For the record, the talk contains two unattributed quotes ("9 out of 5" is adapted from a line attributed to Paul Samuelson---although apparently he said it about Wall Street indices, not macroeconomists---and "wrong about things" is paraphrased from P.J. O'Rourke's Eat the Rich) and, of course, the Einstein "simple" quote is an intentional misquote. The talk is based on a published article in Annals of Improbable Research (see http://www.improb.com/airchives/paperair/volume9/v9i2/mankiw.html ), which sponsored my talk and to which you should subscribe (http://improb.com/subscribe/ ). In the paper you can see the "constructive example" of how trade can make everyone worse off (or you can just wait 50 years to see what happens with climate change). More info and other clips on my website (http://www.standupeconomist.com ), and please sign up for my email list. (No spam I promise.)

10 BEST QUOTES BY CHARLES DICKENS

01:53
Title: 10 BEST QUOTES BY CHARLES DICKENS Description: Charles Dickens was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime, and by the 20th century critics and scholars had recognised him as a literary genius. His novels and short stories enjoy lasting popularity. Born in Portsmouth, Dickens left school to work in a factory when his father was incarcerated in a debtors' prison. Despite his lack of formal education, he edited a weekly journal for 20 years, wrote 15 novels, five novellas, hundreds of short stories and non-fiction articles, lectured and performed extensively, was an indefatigable letter writer, and campaigned vigorously for children's rights, education, and other social reforms. Dickens's literary success began with the 1836 serial publication of The Pickwick Papers. Within a few years he had become an international literary celebrity, famous for his humour, satire, and keen observation of character and society. His novels, most published in monthly or weekly instalments, pioneered the serial publication of narrative fiction, which became the dominant Victorian mode for novel publication. The instalment format allowed Dickens to evaluate his audience's reaction, and he often modified his plot and character development based on such feedback. For example, when his wife's chiropodist expressed distress at the way Miss Mowcher in David Copperfield seemed to reflect her disabilities, Dickens improved the character with positive features. His plots were carefully constructed, and he often wove elements from topical events into his narratives. Masses of the illiterate poor chipped in ha'pennies to have each new monthly episode read to them, opening up and inspiring a new class of readers Thank you for being here with us, For more updates Subscribe to our Channel and stay updated. The Extraordinary Genius of Albert Einstein - Full Documentary HD

The Extraordinary Genius of Albert Einstein - Full Documentary HD Check out some other documentaries: http://bit.ly/1Wz4igV The core of the video is a workshop pedagogical on the Theory of Special Relativity as part of the educational process conducted by our youth leadership, not for the sake of understanding the theory itself, but using Einstein's particular discovery as a case study to demonstrate and walk people through real human thinking, as being something above sense perceptions or opinions. We end with reflecting on the principle of relativity in terms of social relations and individual identities or thought processes, asking the question --how was Einstein able to make his breakthrough? Einstein's personality, his method of thinking, and his theories. Our "narrow path" has led us primarily through Kepler, Fermat, Leibniz, Gauss, and Riemann; all representing a higher potential of man's creativity, who contributed to distinct up-shifts in human knowledge. Our mission in presenting such material is to provide an example of how a mind overcomes the variable and false nature of the senses to discover true invariant principles. In reliving these ideas for one's self, each person gets a chance to become acquainted with what separates them from an animal, their own innate creativity. These mental exercises are not only intended to improve one's knowledge in history, science, and culture, but are intended to help one's understanding generally in economics, politics, and beyond. Best 10 Quotes of Henry Thoreau

02:06
Henry David Thoreau (July 12, 1817 – May 6, 1862) was an American essayist, poet, philosopher, abolitionist, naturalist, tax resister, development critic, surveyor, and historian. A leading transcendentalist, Thoreau is best known for his book Walden, a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings, and his essay "Civil Disobedience" (originally published as "Resistance to Civil Government"), an argument for disobedience to an unjust state. Thoreau's books, articles, essays, journals, and poetry amount to more than 20 volumes. Among his lasting contributions are his writings on natural history and philosophy, in which he anticipated the methods and findings of ecology and environmental history, two sources of modern-day environmentalism. His literary style interweaves close observation of nature, personal experience, pointed rhetoric, symbolic meanings, and historical lore, while displaying a poetic sensibility, philosophical austerity, and Yankee attention to practical detail. He was also deeply interested in the idea of survival in the face of hostile elements, historical change, and natural decay; at the same time he advocated abandoning waste and illusion in order to discover life's true essential needs. He was a lifelong abolitionist, delivering lectures that attacked the Fugitive Slave Law while praising the writings of Wendell Phillips and defending the abolitionist John Brown. Thoreau's philosophy of civil disobedience later influenced the political thoughts and actions of such notable figures as Leo Tolstoy, Mahatma Gandhi, and Martin Luther King Jr. Thoreau is sometimes referred to as an anarchist. Though "Civil Disobedience" seems to call for improving rather than abolishing government—"I ask for, not at once no government, but at once a better government"—the direction of this improvement points toward anarchism: "'That government is best which governs not at all;' and when men are prepared for it, that will be the kind of government which they will have."

Federalist No. 10 by James Madison

16:57
Federalist No. 10 (Federalist Number 10) is an essay written by James Madison and the tenth of the Federalist Papers, a series arguing for the ratification of the United States Constitution. It was published on November 22, 1787 under the pseudonym Publius, the name under which all of the Federalist Papers were published. No. 10 addresses the question of how to guard against "factions", or groups of citizens, with interests contrary to the rights of others or the interests of the whole community. Madison argued that a strong, big republic would be a better guard against those dangers than smaller republics—for instance, the individual states. An audio recording of Federalist No. 10 by James Madison. This is part of our audio book The Founding Documents of the United States of America. As violence and tragedy halted in Jamaica, news companies were forced to published tame and boring articles, to the general public, which included the country’s fiscal growth, but knowing that news of the country’s financial stability will probably put their subscribers to sleep, journalists went to an expected low to publish vain and negative gossip stories. #JamaicaIsAtPeace

Andrew Norman Wilson (born in 1950) is an English writer and newspaper columnist, known for his critical biographies, novels, works of popular history and religious views. He is an occasional columnist for the Daily Mail and former columnist for the London Evening Standard, and has been an occasional contributor to the Times Literary Supplement, New Statesman, The Spectator and The Observer. Wilson was born in Stone, Staffordshire[1] and educated at Hillstone School, Great Malvern in Worcestershire, Rugby School and New College, Oxford. Destined originally for ordination in the Church of England, Wilson entered St Stephen's House, the High Church theological hall at Oxford, but left at the end of his first year. He married the Shakespeare scholar Katherine Duncan-Jones in 1971. They had two daughters, Emily Wilson (born 1971) and Beatrice "Bee" Wilson (born 1974), and divorced in 1990. In the early 1990s, Wilson stated publicly that he was an atheist and published a pamphlet Against Religion in the Chatto & Windus CounterBlasts series; however, religious and ecclesiological themes continue to inform his work. He claims to have lost his Christian beliefs while working on his 1990 biography of C.S. Lewis. For nearly 20 years he continued to be both a sceptic, and a prominent atheist. It was during his period of nonbelief that he wrote biographies of Jesus, St. Paul, and a history of atheism in the 19th century entitled God's Funeral, the latter describing the growth of atheism as due to combination of many influences ranging from David Hume to Sigmund Freud. These and many other of his books such as those on Leo Tolstoy (Whitbread Award for best biography of 1988), C. S. Lewis, Hilaire Belloc are all simultaneously sympathetic to and critical of religious belief. However, in April 2009, he published articles in the New Statesman and Daily Mail affirming his rediscovery of faith, and conversion to Christianity, attacking at the same time in the Daily Mail article both academic and media atheists.[2][3] Since that time, Wilson has published Dante in Love (2011) presenting a study of the great Italian poet, Dante Alighieri, as an artist and philosopher, also depicting an in-depth portrait of medieval Florence to help readers understand the literary and cultural background which engendered the Tuscan's masterpiece, The Divine Comedy. Wilson is a member of Church of England.[4] In addition to his many biographies, Wilson has also written two books covering an entire era, The Victorians (2002) and The Elizabethans (2011), the latter described as "the exhilarating story of the Elizabethan age". Significant novels of Wilson include Scandal about the Profumo affair, The Vicar of Sorrows about a clergyman who has lost his faith dealing with the death of his mother, and Dream Children about pedophilia. His 2007 novel Winnie and Wolf was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A._N._Wilson

Moe Greene is outraged and sees Michaels offer as a sign of disrespect. Michael confronts Moe about slapping Fredo and asks Moe to think about price... Movie Description: Throughout his long, wandering, often distinguished career Francis Ford Coppola has made many films that are good and fine, many more that are flawed but undeniably interesting, and a handful of duds that are worth viewing if only because his personality is so flagrantly absent. Yet he is and always shall be known as the man who directed the Godfather films, a series that has dominated and defined their creator in a way perhaps no other director can understand. Coppola has never been able to leave them alone, whether returning after 15 years to make a trilogy of the diptych, or re-editing the first two films into chronological order for a separate video release, as is the case here. The films are our very own Shakespearean cycle: they tell a tale of a vicious mobster and his extended personal and professional families (once the stuff of righteous moral comeuppance), and they dared to present themselves with an epic sweep and an unapologetically tragic tone. Murder, it turned out, was a serious business. The first film remains a towering achievement, brilliantly cast and conceived. The entry of Michael Corleone into the family business, the transition of power from his father, the ruthless dispatch of his enemies--all this is told with an assurance that is breathtaking to behold. And it turned out to be merely prologue; two years later The Godfather, Part II balanced Michael's ever-greater acquisition of power and influence during the fall of Cuba with the story of his father's own youthful rise from immigrant slums. The stakes were higher, the story's construction more elaborate, and the isolated despair at the end wholly earned. (Has there ever been a cinematic performance greater than Al Pacino's Michael, so smart and ambitious, marching through the years into what he knows is his own doom with eyes open and hungry?) The Godfather, Part III was mostly written off as an attempted cash-in, but it is a wholly worthy conclusion, less slow than autumnally patient and almost merciless in the way it brings Michael's past sins crashing down around him even as he tries to redeem himself.
