Putin Pokes Fun At Macron Over "Huge" French Investments In Russia
A single Finnish company invested the equivalent of almost half of all French investment in Russia, President Vladimir Putin told his counterpart Emmanuel Macron at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF). “Finland’s Fortum invested €6 billion in Russia, while the whole of France invested €15 billion,” Putin said jokingly. Moments earlier, the French President boasted about the figure, proudly stating his country was second among Russia's foreign direct investors. Russian President Vladimir Putin (R) shakes hands with French President Emmanuel Macron during a meeting in St. Petersburg, Russia May 24, 2018. Kirill KudryavtsevFrance signs contracts for €1bn direct investment to Russia According to Putin, the Finnish energy firm was an example that the Russian economy is open to foreign investment, pointing out that the company was given access to sensitive objects in Siberia. The Russian president said France is an old and reliable partner of Russia, as well as Germany. "We very much count on the fact that our French friends, companies will develop in Russia, will receive income and profit.” Putin also noted that Russian-French business ties are diversified since the countries work in many spheres from space to pharmaceuticals. But Russia's leading economic partner is now China, not France or Germany, Putin pointed out. “Trade with Europe was worth $450 billion once, now it has fallen by half. With China, trade is going to reach $100 billion soon,” the president said. Macron, who spoke before Putin at SPIEF, said that France wants to become the largest direct investor in Russia. "The source of motivation is that our French enterprises now employ 170,000 Russian citizens,” he said. The French president added that, in the last 10 years, no French company quit the Russian market despite the troubles in the Russian economy, it is a “strong signal”. Russia: Medvedev vows to improve state efficiency at International Investment Forum
SOT, Dmitri Medvedev, Prime Minister of Russia (Russian): "I must admit that the criticism we hear for the state management system for its lack of flexibility and low efficiency is absolutely fair. The government machine is indeed clumsy." SOT, Dmitri Medvedev, Prime Minister of Russia (Russian): "It must be admitted that its efficiency is low. In such a big country like ours, with so many different regions and a multi-stage management system, the work of the state apparatus must by several times more qualitative." SOT, Dmitri Medvedev, Prime Minister of Russia (Russian): "The low efficiency of the state management system is one of the key factors that have been hindering the country’s development. Many promising initiatives and economic or social ideas on which there is an internal political consensus and which representatives of certain political parties do not dispute about, simply fell apart after running into barriers raised by the state apparatus." SOT, Dmitri Medvedev, Prime Minister of Russia (Russian): "The ideas that could have moved the country forward in various areas are simply broken because of the administrative walls. And the laws that were enacted do not work adequately. That is why now we are trying to move from an instructions-based mode of management to one based on results, that is a project-based approach" Prime Minister Dmitri Medvedev criticised Russia’s state management system for "its lack of flexibility and low efficiency," while speaking on the sidelines of the International Investment Forum in Sochi, Friday. Sep 21, 2012 Russia_Medvedev attends International Investment Forum in Sochi
Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev on Friday took part in a plenary meeting of the 11th International Investment Forum in the Russian Black Sea resort city of Sochi. The prime minister spoke at the session "Competitiveness: is it About Development or Survival?" and at the "Open Region" panel discussion. At the forum, he urged the international community to pool efforts on a new post-crisis development strategy. "We have gained an understanding of a profound correlation between global economic processes in a situation that our countries have been facing. We cannot stay isolated even in our private economic issues. This is perhaps the main lesson of the economic recession that we have all learned today. This is why we must be more sensitive, and we should join our efforts." He also said that the crisis has taught Russia lessons, which has led to a tough budget for the next few years. "Yesterday we reviewed the state budget for 2013, and for the next three years at the government session. Working on this budget turned out to be more difficult than we had anticipated seven or eight months ago. The budget came out more austere than we had initially estimated." The Russian prime minister also examined the latest developments on show at the exhibition and spoke to a talkative robot made in North Ossetia. Saudi Crown Prince at investment forum
(23 Oct 2018) A high-profile economic forum in Saudi Arabia began on Tuesday in Riyadh, with the crown prince making a brief public appearance at the kingdom's first major event since the killing of writer Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul earlier this month. The crown prince attended the investment forum alongside King Abdullah II of Jordan. Khashoggi's death loomed large over the start of the event, known as the Future Investment Initiative, which came as Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday that Saudi officials murdered Khashoggi in their Istanbul consulate after plotting his death for days. At the opening of the conference, Saudi Energy Minister Khalid al-Falih described the journalist's killing as "abhorrent." Some of the forum's keynote speakers and numerous Western executives and officials had cancelled plans to attend over Khashoggi's October 2 slaying. The forum is the brainchild of Prince Mohammed and is aimed at drawing more foreign investment into the kingdom to help create desperately needed jobs for millions of young Saudis entering the workforce in the coming years. Despite the absence of key executives and speakers from the United States and other Western partners, some 50 billion US dollars in deals were signed at the forum, with Russian and Asian businesses and officials eager to do business with the kingdom. Prince Mohammed has come under mounting pressure, with critics suspecting he ordered Khashoggi's death or at least knew about it. Saudi authorities say they have arrested suspects and dismissed senior officials, but the crown prince has thus far escaped blame. Earlier on Tuesday, King Salman and Prince Mohammed received Khashoggi's son, Salah, and his brother, Sahel, at the Yamama Palace in Riyadh, where the two royals expressed their condolences. A friend of the Khashoggi family told The Associated Press that Salah has been under a travel ban since last year. The individual spoke on condition of anonymity, fearing reprisal. Oct 2, 2012 Russia_Putin gives speech at 'Russia Calling!' investment forum
Russian President Vladimir Putin gave a speech on Tuesday at the VTB Capital investment forum "Russia Calling!" in Moscow. He announced that next year the government will be using around $2 billion of budget funds to recapitalize the national Direct Investment Fund - and said the economy will be equipped to cope with any financial crises. "In case of a sea change in external economic conditions in 2013, we have mapped out a safety net, which includes mechanisms for re-distribution of budget spending. Among others, we can raise capitalization of our banks by up to 150 billion rubles ($5 billion), if there is a need to do that. Let's hope that day never comes, but if it does, we will be able to achieve this goal by swapping federal loan bonds for banks' securities." Putin also said a new central depositary will be created by November, to give foreign investors better access to the domestic financial market. "The Russian Direct Investment Fund is also instrumental in diversifying investment projects. We agreed to allocate 62 billion rubles ($2 billion) to this fund annually. We did it last year, and will do it this year again. We haven't included this amount in the 2013 budget, but this must be done," he said.
