Water Resources

11:38
005 - Water Resources In this video Paul Andersen explains how water is unequally distributed around the globe through the hydrologic cycles. Seawater is everywhere but is not useful without costly desalination. Freshwater is divided between surface water and groundwater but must me stored and moved for domestic, industrial, and agricultural uses. Subsidized low cost water has created a problem with water conservation but economic changes could help solve the problem. Do you speak another language? Support this important work: https://thriva.activenetwork.com/Reg4/Form.aspx?IDTD=2357652&RF=2409160&mode=0 The National Science Resources Center (NSRC) was formed by the Smithsonian Institution and the National Academies in 1985 with the mission to improve the learning and teaching of science in school districts in the United States and throughout the world. Through its parent institutions, the NSRC has actively engaged the scientific, engineering, and education communities in all of its programs, improving educational outcomes for over 30% of the U.S. student population. The NSRC is an intermediary organization that bridges research on how children learn with best practices for the systemic educational reform from the classroom to the state leadership. The NSRC provides science education leadership development by: - Building awareness for science education among leaders; - Helping develop science education leadership among groups from school districts and states; - Conducting programs to support the professional growth of teachers; and - Developing and disseminating information about exemplary science instructional materials. A teacher integrates hands-on experience for her students in her lesson. This video is one of a series produced by TESS-India to support teachers in developing learner-centred classroom practices. Filmed in primary and secondary schools in India, the aim of the videos is to inspire teachers to experiment with using similar approaches in their own classrooms. The videos are intended to complement the text-based TESS-India materials for teachers and school leaders. However, they may also be viewed independently of these materials. TESS-India (Teacher Education through School-based Support in India) is an Open University, UK led teacher education project that has collaboratively developed a large repository of freely available, adaptable Open Educational Resources (OER) that support national education priorities in India. The resources are accessible in a range of media and languages, for use in multiple initial and continuing teacher development contexts. TESS-India is funded by UK aid from the UK government. Soil and Soil Dynamics

09:22
006 - Soil and Soil Dynamics In this video Paul Andersen explains how soils are formed and classified. Weathering of rock creates particles which are mixed with water, air, and organic material. Soils are classified according to particle size, chemical makeup, and horizon distribution. A brief discussion of soil loss through erosion, compaction, and salinization is included. Victor Universal Testing Machines by Victor Equipments Resources Sdn. Bhd.

03:18
Victor UTM Overview Tensile testing, also known as tension testing, is a fundamental materials science test in which a sample is subjected to a controlled tension until failure. The results from the test are commonly used to select a material for an application, for quality control, and to predict how a material will react under other types of forces. Properties that are directly measured via a tensile test are ultimate tensile strength, maximum elongation and reduction in area. From these measurements the following properties can also be determined: Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, yield strength, and strain-hardening characteristics. Victor universal testing machine The most common testing machine used in tensile testing is the universal testing machine. This type of machine has two crossheads; one is adjusted for the length of the specimen and the other is driven to apply tension to the test specimen. Victor UTM has two types: hydraulic powered and electromagnetically powered machines. The UTM machine must have the proper capabilities for the test specimen being tested. There are three main parameters: force capacity, speed, and precision and accuracy. Force capacity refers to the fact that the UTM machine must be able to generate enough force to fracture the specimen. The machine must be able to apply the force quickly or slowly enough to properly mimic the actual application. Finally, the machine must be able to accurately and precisely measure the gauge length and forces applied; for instance, a large machine that is designed to measure long elongations may not work with a brittle material that experiences short elongations prior to fracturing. Victor UTM strain measurements are most commonly measured with an extensometer, but strain gauges are also frequently used on small test specimen or when Poisson's ratio is being measured.
