Language learning - The Most Effective Method Of All
There is lots of research and discussion on the most effective way to learn languages. The answer is, whatever you enjoy doing with the language. Transcript: Hi there, Steve Kaufmann here. First of all, I want to say that I did a webcam interview with Luca, the wonderful Italian polyglot. We are going to put it up here at my YouTube channel, but I’m waiting until I’m away because while I’m away I can’t do any videos. I’m going to be in Australia and New Zealand and so Alex is going to put up some pictures. I think Luca and I went at it for about 40 minutes or so, so it’s going to be at least four sessions. So that’s when you’ll be seeing those interviews that I did with Luca, just so there’s not a blank for a whole month. I want to talk today, in the subject of language learning, about something that’s kind of been running around in my mind. I come up with all these things that are the key to language learning and I may have used this before, I don’t know, but it suddenly dawned on me that the most important thing is, is it fun. Do you enjoy doing it? I mentioned this in my 7 Secrets to Language Learning, I think the first one was spend the time and the second was to do things that you enjoy doing. Teaching Vocabulary to Young Learners Through Brain-Based Teaching Strategies by Setenay Çelik
Having started with the point that children learn easily and forget quickly, I have been working a lot on how to teach vocabulary to young learners by improving their memory skills. If it comes to memory, it is well worth searching about the brain. Throughout my search, I have found out that as long as the teachers meet the needs of the young brains, it is easier for the learners to remember new vocabulary items. In this presentation I’m planning to share my findings and ten practical brain- based activities that I use in my classes and find really effective. Setenay is from Turkey and she has been teaching English for 8 years including 4 years of teaching when she was a university student. She holds a Masters Degree in English Language Teaching from Gazi University in Ankara, Turkey. Her particular areas of interest are teaching English to young learners and creating new, useful classroom materials and activities.

Shaping the Way We Teach English: Module 07, Learning Strategies
The goal of teaching strategies is to create autonomous learners, learners who can learn by themselves inside and outside the classroom. Research and classroom practices are evolving in many directions to try to better understand and facilitate learning for students of all ages. In general, successful language learners tend to select strategies that work well together, according to the requirements of the language task. These learners can easily explain the strategies they use and why they use them. An innovative offering from the Office of English Language Programs, Shaping the Way We Teach English, is a 14-module teacher training video series developed and produced in cooperation with the University of Oregon.

Communication Strategies for Second Language Acquisition
Language learners often freeze up or completely stop communicating when they hit a point of language that they dont know how to navigate. Antonio Graceffo teaches his students that it is OK to make mistakes. And when they dont know how to say something, they should describe it or talk around it. To demonstrate, Antonio tells a Chinese story to his students, and has them keep a tally of his mistakes in spoken Chinese. In spite of his more than 40 mistakes, the students understood the whole story. How to Memorize the Vocabulary of Any Language Using A Memory Palace
Would you like to know how to learn 200 Words (Or More!) in ANY language ... In as little as only 10 days? If you need this video in written form, check out this post on how to memorize vocabulary: https://www.magneticmemorymethod.com/how-to-memorize-vocabulary/ In this video: How to Learn & Memorize the Vocabulary of Any Language ... Using the Magnetic Memory Method (Advanced Memory Palaces) If you'd like to improve your ability to learn and memorize foreign language vocabulary by as much as 100%, 200%, even 300% ... using simple memory techniques that you can learn in a few short hours (or less), then this may be the most important video course you will ever view. Believe it or not, it doesn't matter if you have a good memory or not. The information in this course will teach you: •Why memory is like a bicycle everyone can ride (with some minor personal adjustments). •The real reason why no one should ever be squeamish about memorization or learning a language. •Why and how some of the most famous memory skills are applicable to language learning. •How to create a 26 "letter location" memory palace network based on the English alphabet. •Unique techniques that will have you literally "tuning in" on your dream foreign language. •How to separate foreign language words in the most effective manner for memorization. • A simple strategy for memorizing the male, neuter and feminine genders (depending on the language, this is a process that some people consider the ultimate nightmare of language learning.) •Two secret ways to use relaxation to aid the memorization process. These two methods alone are worth the price of this course because they will literally eliminate stress from your body as you work on learning and memorizing foreign language vocabulary. •And much, much more ... These techniques have been used by real language learners, most of whom previously considered themselves owners of a "bad memory" to make real strides in their foreign language learning efforts. Don't worry! None of these techniques are rocket science. Frankly, if you can memorize a short email address or the name of a movie, then you can use this system to memorize the vocabulary of any language. But there's really no time to lose. Every day that you are not using this simple vocabulary memorization system, you are literally stealing from yourself the joy of reading, speaking and knowing another language in depth as you easily expand the natural abilities of your mind. Total Physical Response, Foreign Language Demonstration
This video helps English speakers understand what it's like to be in the role of a learner when the instructor is using Total Physical Response (TPR). In the first part, Whole Body Movements, the instructor teaches English-speaking adults to carry out verbal commands in Indonesian related to standing, sitting, walking, and turning around. In the second part, Expanding Vocabulary, the instructor uses different verbal commands to teach the Indonesian words for body parts and two pieces of furniture. When he is sure the learners understand these spoken words, the instructor begins to teach them to read the same words.

Learning to Read in a Second Language
Fred Genesee gives the closing plenary at the 2008 Immersion Education Conference. Reading is fundamental to successful education. Reading competence is both an end in itself and a means to an end. A primary role of schools is to teach students how to read and, at the same time, learning to read serves academic development as students must read academic material in order to develop knowledge and competence in academic domains. In recent years, there has been substantial in research on reading acquisition in monolinguals and, as a result, our understanding of reading acquisition has advanced considerably. This has also brought with it implications for teaching reading. There have also been considerable advances in research on learning to read in a second language. This research has taken on important practical implications because of the growing number of students in American schools who are not native speakers of English. This presentation will summarize research findings over the last 25 years on second language reading acquisition in both minority language students acquiring reading competence in English as a second language and English-speaking immersion students acquiring reading competence in French as a second language. In brief, the evidence indicates that: (a) reading acquisition is a complex process that changes over grades; (b) the acquisition of competence in reading is cumulative so that early acquired skills are important for the acquisition of later skills; (c) learning to read in a second language is similar to learning to read in a first language in some important ways; (d) there are important differences in first and second language reading acquisition; and (e) predictors of reading success in a first language are fundamentally the same as predictors of success at reading in a second language. The implications of these findings for assessment, instruction, and remediation of students with reading difficulties will be discussed.
