King Lear and the Power of Tragedy with James P. Driscoll

28:32
James P. Driscoll, PhD, is one of the foremost critics of Renaissance literature from a Jungian perspective. He is author of Identity in Shakespearean Drama and The Unfolding God of Jung and Milton. Here he maintains that, since the ancient Greeks, literary critics have consistently viewed tragedy as the highest literary art form. This is because tragedy reveals the nobility of the human spirit in the face of evil and disaster. And, for centuries, critics have acclaimed King Lear as the greatest of all tragedies written in any language. Driscoll claims that King Lear's strength lies in the fact that it reveals the many faces of the godhead in the western tradition. New Thinking Allowed host, Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD, is author of The Roots of Consciousness, Psi Development Systems, and The PK Man. Between 1986 and 2002 he hosted and co-produced the original Thinking Allowed public television series. (Recorded on July 23, 2017) For a complete, updated list with links to all of our videos -- as well as many other opportunities to engage with and support the New Thinking Allowed video channel -- please visit the New Thinking Allowed Foundation at http://www.newthinkingallowed.org.

EDIT: Have another! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pkjp8O-Mtpo AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE: http://youtu.be/bJU9RO7z_IY Sorry it's been a while. Summer vacation plays merry hell with both my work ethic and my voice. *discreetly hacks up a lung* King Lear! He's not a very good king, and he's not a very good father! Good thing that, by the end, he's neither of those things.

King Lear to go (Shakespeare in 9 minutes)

It is the festive season - the time for family trouble. Now although conflicts have to be carried out, don’t burn the bridges after the traditional family row under the Christmas tree. Otherwise - well, KING LEAR might happen. Michael Sommer and his Playmobil ensemble present a concise and entertaining version of Shakespeare’s tragedy. DISCLAIMER: WATCHING THIS VIDEO DOES NOT REPLACE READING IT! My recommendation: Read it yourself.

[ http://www.60secondrecap.com/study-guide/william-shakespeare-king-lear-theme/ ] by Jenny Sawyer The main theme of "King Lear"? 60sR serves it up, once again, in a word. Plain and simple: Betrayal. That's because in this tragedy, it isn't just the characters that betray each other. In "King Lear," betrayal runs amok—and no part of its characters' lives is exempt. A 60second Recap®.

King Lear Summary | Summary, Themes & Plot of King Lear (Audio Book)

54:50
King Lear is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare. It depicts the gradual descent into madness of the title character, after he disposes of his kingdom giving bequests to two of his three daughters based on their flattery of him, bringing tragic consequences for all. Derived from the legend of Leir of Britain, a mythological pre-Roman Celtic king, the play has been widely adapted for the stage and motion pictures, with the title role coveted by many of the world's most accomplished actors. Originally drafted in 1605 or 1606 at the latest, with its first known performance on St. Stephen's Day in 1606, the first attribution to Shakespeare was a 1608 publication in a quarto of uncertain provenance; it may be an early draft or simply reflect the first performance text. The Tragedy of King Lear, a more theatrical revision, was included in the 1623 First Folio. Modern editors usually conflate the two, though some insist that each version has its own individual integrity that should be preserved. After the English Restoration, the play was often revised with a happy, non-tragic ending for audiences who disliked its dark and depressing tone, but since the 19th century Shakespeare's original version has been regarded as one of his supreme achievements. The tragedy is particularly noted for its probing observations on the nature of human suffering and kinship. George Bernard Shaw wrote, "No man will ever write a better tragedy than Lear." Synopsis: King Lear of Britain, elderly and wanting to retire from the duties of the monarchy, decides to divide his realm among his three daughters, and declares he will offer the largest share to the one who loves him most. The eldest, Goneril, speaks first, declaring her love for her father in fulsome terms. Moved by her flattery Lear proceeds to grant to Goneril her share as soon as she has finished her declaration, before Regan and Cordelia have a chance to speak. He then awards to Regan her share as soon as she has spoken. When it is finally the turn of his youngest daughter, Cordelia, at first she refuses to say anything ("Nothing, my Lord") and then declares there is nothing to compare her love to, nor words to properly express it; she speaks honestly but bluntly, which infuriates him. In his anger he disinherits Cordelia and divides her share between Regan and Goneril. The Earl of Gloucester and the Earl of Kent observe that, by dividing his realm between Goneril and Regan, Lear has awarded his realm in equal shares to the peerages of the Duke of Albany (Goneril's husband) and the Duke of Cornwall (Regan's husband). Kent objects to Lear's unfair treatment of Cordelia; enraged by Kent's protests, Lear banishes him from the country. Lear then summons the Duke of Burgundy and the King of France, who have both proposed marriage to Cordelia. Learning that Cordelia has been disinherited, the Duke of Burgundy withdraws his suit, but the King of France is impressed by her honesty and marries her nonetheless. Meanwhile, Gloucester has introduced his illegitimate son Edmund to Kent. .................................................................................... Themes in King Lear

12:30
In this lesson, a similar process is used to extract and examine the scenes from two Shakespearian plays. This process models an approach that learners could use to determine and discuss the themes in any play they are studying. The lesson also model effective ways of discussing themes by referring to them in universal terms and supporting them with examples.
