He interprets Johann Sebastian Bach’s greatest organ works, including the popular Toccata in D minor and the Fugue in G minor. He plays on the world-famous Silbermann Organ in Freiberg (Saxony). The organ was completed in 1714 and thoroughly restored in 1982/1983 and it closely retains its original condition. Bach adored his contemporary Gottfried Silbermann’s organs for their exquisite sound and the recording allows the listener to enjoy this sound to the full while offering a closer look at this marvellously crafted instrument. Ton Koopman plays favourite harpsichord pieces and accompanies the eminent Bach Singer Klaus Mertens in popular arias.

ORGANIST 41 - Ton Koopman

Ton Koopman (1944) What does one write about a phenomenon like Ton Koopman? Not only a virtuosic organist and harpsichordist, he is also the world famous conductor and founder of The Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and Amsterdam Baroque Choir. He was born in Zwolle, just a few minutes from where I live. He studied in Amsterdam and received the Prix d’Excellence for both harpsichord and organ. Koopman is one of the few surviving pioneers of the authentic performance movement. He is still an internationally recognized expert on Baroque music, both for orchestra as well as for keyboard. Koopman has performed throughout Europe, the USA and Japan. He is especially known for his recordings of all of Buxtehude’s surviving works as well as the complete recordings of Bach’s 202 surviving cantatas. He has recorded Bach’s organ works several times. He has won many prizes including the Bach Medal (Leipzig), Buxtehude Prize (Lübeck), and an Edison. There are few who dispute Koopman’s performances with his Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and Choir, but when it comes to his organ works, he has been criticized for the speed at which he plays. VIDEO Ton Koopman plays Bach in Weingarten and Leeuwarden. On the Gabler organ in Weingarten: Praeludium in C minor (BWV549a) and Allegro from Trio Sonata in C Major (BWV529c). On the Müller organ in Leeuwarden: “Jesu Christus, unser Heiland” (BWV688) and Praeludium in A Minor (BWV543a). ORGANS The organ in Weingarten is world famous, yet it took 13 years to build, due to all kinds of problems which Gabler couldn’t figure out. In actual fact the task was much too large and complex for Gabler. Eventually it got finished and is now considered one of the great organs of its time. J.S. Bach: Toccata & Fugue - Famous Organ Music (Full Album)

Tracklist below. Buy on iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/nl/album/j.s.-bach-toccata-fugue-famous/id1077302539 For physical sales: http://brilliantclassics.com/articles/j/js-bach-toccata-fugue-famous-organ-music/ Listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/album/5g2Y6I05UyXD2mPLbLRZZN There is no piece of music as synonymous with the organ than J.S. Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor BWV565: the two-note introductory motif is as well recognised as the opening of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, and has featured widely in popular culture – in films such as Disney’s Fantasia and The Phantom of the Opera. Interestingly, it may actually be an arrangement for organ of an original work for violin, possibly not even by Bach himself! However, regardless of its authenticity, it is this fantastical and much-loved piece that opens Stefano Molardi’s recital of Bach’s greatest compositions for the ‘king of instruments’. Molardi’s programme continues with major works such as the Toccata, Adagio and Fugue in C BWV564 and the monumental Passacaglia in C minor BWV582, interspersed with more delicate pieces from the composer’s different collections of chorale preludes – the Orgelbüchlein, ‘Schübler’ Chorales and third part of the Clavierübung. The Trio Sonata in C BWV529 adds some great variety to the compilation, and is a feat of technical ingenuity, with three individual melodies taken up by each hand and the feet of the player. This two-disc set brings together the best-known organ works by its greatest patron: a perfect introduction to organ music for a beginner, and a marvellous addition to the collection of an enthusiast already well-versed in the repertoire. Award-winning organist, harpsichordist, conductor and scholar Stefano Molardi is a peerless interpreter, with his ongoing recording of Bach’s Complete Organ Music for Brilliant Classics now into its third volume (BC94981). The instruments heard on this album date from Bach’s time, therefore bringing us as close as possible to the soundworld of the great Leipzig Cantor and allowing us to hear them as he might have done himself. 00:00:00 Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, BWV 565: I. J.S. Bach - Harpsichord or (Organ) Concerto in d minor, BWV 1059 / Ton Koopman, organ

12:27
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685~1750) Konzert für Clavier, Streicher und Basso Continuo d-moll, BWV 1059 (incomplete work, revision by Ton Koopman version) I. Sinfonia (from cantata, BWV 35: Sinfonia) - 00:00 II. Aria (from cantata, BWV 35: "Gott hat alles wohlgemacht") - 05:18 III. Sinfonia: presto (from cantata, BWV 35: Second Sinfonia) - 08:59 Ton Koopman (orgel) Ku Ebbinge (oboe da caccia) The Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra Ton Koopman (conductor) *Clavier(Keyboard): harpsichord, clavichord, claviorganum, or organ etc.* - Concerto in d minor, BWV 1059 (incomplete) - Fragment consisting of 9 bars(only the first 9 bars survive in Bach's own hand). Taken from the opening Sinfonia of the Cantata, BWV 35 "Geist und Seele wird verwirret" (1726) In the cantata, Bach uses an obbligato organ not only in the two sinfonias (which evidently form the first and last movements of a lost instrumental concerto, possibly for Oboe) but also in the aria No. 1, whose siciliano character likewise points to its original function as a concerto movement. Bach intended to write this out as a harpsichord concerto but abandoned the endeavor after only 9 bars. - Bach's Harpsichord Concertos - The harpsichord concertos, BWV 1052-1065, are concertos for harpsichord, strings and continuo by Johann Sebastian Bach. There are seven complete concertos for a single harpsichord, (BWV 1052-1058), three concertos for 2 harpsichords (BWV 1060-1062), two concertos for 3 harpsichords (BWV 1063-1064), and one concerto for 4 harpsichords, (BWV 1065). Two other concertos include solo harpsichord parts: the concerto BWV 1044, which has solo parts for harpsichord, violin and flute, and Brandenburg concerto no.5, BWV 1050, with the same scoring. In addition there is a single 9 bar concerto fragment for a single harpsichord (BWV 1059) which adds an oboe to the strings and continuo. All of Bach's harpsichord concertos (with the exception of the Brandenburg concerto) are thought to be arrangements made from earlier concertos for melodic instruments probably written in Köthen. In many cases, only the harpsichord version has survived. From 1729 to 1741, Bach was director of the Collegium musicum in Leipzig, a student musical society, founded by Georg Philipp Telemann in 1703 and run before Bach by Balthasar Schott. The Collegium musicum often gave performances at Zimmermann's coffee-house. It was for these occasions that Bach produced his harpsichord concertos, among the first concertos for keyboard instrument ever written. It is thought that the multiple harpsichord concertos were heard earlier than those for one harpsichord, perhaps because his sons CPE Bach and WF Bach (both excellent harpsichord players) were living at home until 1733 and 1734, respectively. It is likely that Johann Ludwig Krebs, who studied with Bach until 1735, also played harpsichord in the Collegium musicum. The concertos for one harpsichord, BWV 1052-1059, survive in an autograph score (now in the Staatsbibliothek Berlin, Mus. ms. Bach P 234) which is not a fair copy but a draft, or working score, and has been dated to about 1738. Bach may of course have played the works much earlier, using the parts from an original melody-instrument concerto and extemporising a suitable harpsichord version while playing. The works BWV 1052-1057 were intended as a set of six, shown in the manuscript in Bach's traditional manner beginning with 'J.J.' (Jesu Juva) and ending with 'Finis. S. D. Gl.' (Soli Deo Gloria). Aside from the Brandenburg concertos, it is the only such collection of concertos in Bach's oeuvre. The concerto BWV 1058 and fragment BWV 1059 are contained at the end of the score, and are an earlier attempt at a set of (headed J.J.) which was abandoned for one reason or another. Bach's harpsichord concertos were, until recently, often underestimated by scholars, who did not have the convenience of hearing the benefits that historically informed performance has brought to works such as these; Albert Schweitzer wrote 'The transcriptions have often been prepared with almost unbelievable cursoriness and carelessness. Either time was pressing or he was bored by the matter.' Recent research has demonstrated quite the reverse to be true; he transferred solo parts to the harpsichord with typical skill and variety. Bach's interest in the harpsichord concerto form can be inferred from the fact that he arranged every suitable melody-instrument concerto as a harpsichord concerto, and while the harpsichord versions have been preserved the same is not true of the melody-instrument versions.

Koopman Plays Bach

02:23
Dutch organist and harpsichordist Ton Koopman is one of the most distinguished Bach interpreters of our time. On this DVD, he is featured interpreting Johann Sebastian Bach's greatest organ works, including the popular Toccata in D minor and the Fugue in G minor. He plays on the world-famous Silbermann Organ in Freiberg (Saxony). The organ was completed in 1714 and thoroughly restored in 1982/1983 and it closely retains its original condition. Bach adored his contemporary Gottfried Silbermann's organs for their exquisite sound and the recording allows the listener to enjoy this sound to the full while offering a closer look at this marvellously crafted instrument. In the second part of this DVD Ton Koopman is "At Home with Bach!" He plays favourite harpsichord pieces and accompanies the eminent Bach Singer Klaus Mertens in popular arias. The programme was filmed in the enchanting Gohlis Castle near Leipzig, a late baroque jewel built in 1755. An enlightening Behind-the-Scenes Picture Gallery completes this masterly DVD.
