Have you ever wondered how to think in English and stop translating in your head? In this class I answer two very simple questions: is it possible to 'think' in English, and is it a bad thing to translate in your head? Instead of using personal opinions and anecdotes I use science to show you the truth about 'thinking' in English and how to stop translating in your head. Tips from a journal editor: How to select a journal for your paper?

13:13
In this video, Bruce Dancik reveals what journal editors actually look for in a manuscript. He provides useful tips on how an author can find out which journal would be interested to publish his/her research and explains some of the important factors that an author should consider while choosing a suitable journal. This video is a part of an interview series in which Donald Samulack, President, US Operations, Editage, Cactus Communications, speaks to Bruce P. Dancik, Editor-in-Chief, NRC Research Press/Canadian Science Publishing, and Professor Emeritus, Dept. of Renewable Resources, University of Alberta, at the 54th Annual Meet of the Council of Science Editors in 2011. Publish research | What are the main factors to consider when choosing a journal?

03:26
In this tip, our expert teacher, Emily, describes the questions to ask to ensure your paper has the criteria necessary for publication. A journal may choose to accept or reject your paper based on a specific set of criteria stated explicitly on the journal website There are universally accepted standards in academia. Generally, these include its novelty, soundness of research methods, contribution to advancing a particular model, theory, or the overall field, application and usefulness to real-world issues and challenges, connection to the current state of the art, the narrative of the research problem, and comprehensiveness. All of the factors contribute to how journals will assess your work. Therefore, it is important to weight your research against these factors when deciding on which journal to submit your research. Uni-edit provides English editing and translation services for conference papers, journal papers, research papers, theses, dissertations and other academic manuscripts. Literal translation | Wikipedia audio article

06:56
This is an audio version of the Wikipedia Article: Literal translation Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago. Learning by listening is a great way to: - increases imagination and understanding - improves your listening skills - improves your own spoken accent - learn while on the move - reduce eye strain Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone. You can find other Wikipedia audio articles too at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuKfABj2eGyjH3ntPxp4YeQ You can upload your own Wikipedia articles through: https://github.com/nodef/wikipedia-tts "The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing." - Socrates SUMMARY ======= Literal translation, direct translation, or word-for-word translation is the rendering of text from one language to another one word at a time (Latin: "verbum pro verbo") with or without conveying the sense of the original whole. In translation studies, "literal translation" denotes technical translation of scientific, technical, technological or legal texts. In translation theory, another term for "literal translation" is "metaphrase"; and for phrasal ("sense") translation — "paraphrase." When considered a bad practice of conveying word by word (lexeme to lexeme, or morpheme to lexeme) translation of non-technical type literal translations has the meaning of mistranslating idioms, for example, or in the context of translating an analytic language to a synthetic language, it renders even the grammar unintelligible. The concept of literal translation may be viewed as an oxymoron (contradiction in terms), given that literal denotes something existing without interpretation, whereas a translation, by its very nature, is an interpretation (an interpretation of the meaning of words from one language into another).

GRC FACES OF EXCELLENCE: Silvia Hansen-Schirra – Bridging Brains and Words (09.02.2016)

05:18
Silvia Hansen-Schirra is Professor of English Linguistics and Translation Studies at the Faculty of Translation Studies, Linguistics, and Cultural Studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Throughout her scientific career she has been able to position herself at the leading edge of computational translation processing, making a lasting impact on the research groups she has worked with, and advancing the frontier of science in her fields of specialization. She has managed to acquire several large-scale research projects and received a huge amount of third-party funds. This enables her to work at the interface between translation studies, psycholinguistics, and computational processing. Professor Hansen-Schirra's work is characterized by this interdisciplinary spirit and has experienced strong international recognition. She has published several books and numerous articles on a wide range of issues such as corpus-based translation studies, translation process research, machine translation, and translation didactics – to mention just a few of her fields of interest. She is also co-editor of the open access journal "Translation: Computation, Corpora, Cognition" and of the newly established open access book series "Translation and Multilingual Natural Language Processing". Last but not least, she has set up a neurolinguistic laboratory at her faculty in order to consolidate her methodological repertoire concerning cognitive instruments. This is especially remarkable since there are only a handful of translation schools worldwide which have equipment like eye tracking. As a consequence, Professor Hansen-Schirra and the translation faculty of Mainz University in Germersheim are pioneers in this rather young research field within the translation studies discipline. In 2014, Silvia Hansen-Schirra has become a fellow of the Gutenberg Research College (GRC) at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. The GRC was established in 2007. It serves as a central strategic instrument to promote cutting-edge research at Mainz University and it has three main functions: it advises the President and the Senate in strategic matters concerning research, it aims to stimulate interdisciplinary exchange, and it furthers individual excellence by awarding fellowships to outstanding researchers. GRC fellowships usually exempt the selected fellows from some of their teaching and administrative duties for up to five years, giving them more time for their research and providing better research conditions. What Will Happen to Your Body If You Walk Every Day

10:09
Walking is a totally free, easy exercise that requires little effort, and benefits not only your physical but also your mental well-being. If you’re looking for a simple yet very effective way of losing weight and improving your overall health, walking is something just for you. People who are physically active throughout their life are much less prone to this disease than those who have a more sedentary lifestyle. And that’s because they have more volume in their hippocampus, the part of the brain responsible for verbal memory and learning. A daily half-hour walk helps avoid serious problems, like coronary heart disease to name one, by lowering high blood pressure and cholesterol levels and improving blood circulation. Because of better-quality and deeper breathing, some symptoms associated with lung disease can show significant improvement thanks to walking. Muscle tone and weight loss is also totally achievable through simple walking. Find your optimal pace, but don’t break out into a jog. This sort of speed walking is low impact and doesn’t require any recovery time, which means no sore muscles to keep you from getting out and walking the next day. The Arthritis Foundation recommends at least 30 minutes of moderate walking a day to reduce pain, stiffness, and inflammation in the joints. Building strong bones will help you prevent osteoporosis and reduce bone loss. Walking contributes to better blood circulation within the spinal structures, pumping important nutrients into the soft tissues and improving posture and flexibility, both of which are vital for a healthy spine. A group of researchers at Iowa State University worked with hundreds of college students. Walking changed their mood for the better, even though no one warned them it could do so. If you still don’t feel motivated enough to start walking for your health, try joining a class or find a buddy who also wouldn’t mind getting all the benefits of walking. Another idea could be to hire a personal trainer. TEDx Salem-Dr.T S Subbaraman-Science in Classical Tamil -அறிவியல் தமிழ்

23:41
Dr.T S Subbaraman holds a doctorate in Physics and was a former Head of the Physics department at Anna University, Chennai. This is one side of him. His specialization may be Physics, but his fervor in his heart is inscribed with Tamil. He always had the passion to write dramas, articles and stories in Tamil. He is also an expert in writing poems in English. Dr. Subbaraman has acted in Tamil plays from the age of nine. He has also performed in various TV and radio dramas. He has the credit of making the science show "Maanudam ventradu" aired in All India Radio for three continuous years into scientific drama. Dr. Subbaraman has authored many books. He has also translated Shakespeare's "Hamlet" into Tamil. Seeing Dr.Subbaraman's passion for Tamil, Anna University appointed him as the first Director of the Centre for Development of Tamil in Engineering and Technology (CDTET) in 2001. He believes that Tamil must be given the status of a classical language and people should works towards developing Tamil in Engineering, Scientific and Technological literature. Through "Kalanjiyam", a quarterly magazine published by CDTET, he wrote several science and technology articles in Tamil. Through CDTET, he also initiated the process of updating Tamil dictionary through the Tamil Virtual University on a regular basis. He strongly believes that scientific Tamil literature can survive on its own without the incorporation of scientific terms from other languages. True to his thoughts, in his book "Oli Nooru" which is about the science of light, he has aesthetically explained Physics concepts through simple and short Tamil poems(venpA). His works have received appreciations from eminent scholars like Sujatha Rangarajan, Dr.ABJ Abdul Kalam, Munaivar va.se.kuzhandhai samy etc., ( For more information about Dr.T S Subbaraman & his works, for any comments/feedbacks, please e-mail [email protected] The speaker is willing to hear the responses from the audience) About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations) (http://www.tedxsalem.com)

What is ontology? Introduction to the word and the concept

03:58
In a philosophical context 0:28 Why ontology is important 1:08 Ontological materialism 1:34 Ontological idealism 1:59 In a non-philosophical context 2:24 Information systems 2:40 Social ontology 3:25 The word ontology comes from two Greek words: "Onto", which means existence, or being real, and "Logia", which means science, or study. The word is used both in a philosophical and non-philosophical context. ONTOLOGY IN A PHILOSOPHICAL CONTEXT In philosophy, ontology is the study of what exists, in general. Examples of philosophical, ontological questions are: What are the fundamental parts of the world? How they are related to each other? Are physical parts more real than immaterial concepts? For example, are physical objects such as shoes more real than the concept of walking? In terms of what exists, what is the relationship between shoes and walking? Why is ontology important in philosophy? Philosophers use the concept of ontology to discuss challenging questions to build theories and models, and to better understand the ontological status of the world. Over time, two major branches of philosophical ontology has developed, namely: Ontological materialism, and ontological idealism. Ontological materialism From a philosophical perspective, ontological materialism is the belief that material things, such as particles, chemical processes, and energy, are more real, for example, than the human mind. The belief is that reality exists regardless of human observers. Ontological idealism Idealism is the belief that immaterial phenomenon, such as the human mind and consciousness, are more real, for example, than material things. The belief is that reality is constructed in the mind of the observer. ONTOLOGY IN A NON-PHILOSOPHICAL CONTEXT Outside philosophy, ontology is used in a different, more narrow meaning. Here, an ontology is the description of what exist specifically within a determined field. For example, every part that exists in a specific information system. This includes the relationship and hierarchy between these parts. Unlike the philosophers, these researchers are not primarily interested in discussing if these things are the true essence, core of the system. Nor are they discussing if the parts within the system are more real compared to the processes that take place within the system. Rather, they are focused on naming parts and processes and grouping similar ones together into categories. Outside philosophy, the word ontology is also use, for example, in social ontology. Here, the idea is to describe society and its different parts and processes. The purpose of this is to understand and describe the underlying structures that affect individuals and groups. Gerald Schroeder is a scientist with over thirty years of experience in research and teaching. He earned his Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctorate degrees all at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, with his doctorate thesis being under the supervision of physics professor Robley D. Evans. This was followed by five years on the staff of the MIT physics department prior to moving to Israel, where he joined the Weizmann Institute of Science and then the Volcani Research Institute, while also having a laboratory at The Hebrew University. His Doctorate is in two fields: Earth sciences and physics. Schroeder's formal theological training in biblical, talmudic and kabalistic interpretation includes fifteen years of study under the late Rabbi Herman Pollack, Rabbi Chaim Brovender and Rabbi Noah Weinberg, of blessed memory. The scientific career that Schroeder chose has given him varied and often unusual experiences. In his work with nuclear disarmament, he has been present at the detonation of six atomic bombs. Work in control of radioactivity has put him hundreds of meters below ground in U.S. and foreign uranium mines. Within this research, he invented and had patented the first real time monitor for airborne alpha beta gamma emitters. The government of the People's Republic of China, during the decade before it established direct contacts with Israel, was willing to overlook his Jerusalem address and had him as a frequent advisor. He also has consulted for agencies of the governments of Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Canada, USA. Invitations for him to lecture have come from around the world. He has over 60 publications in the world's leading scientific journals on topics ranging from the radon atmosphere of the moon (in Science) to the metabolism of mother's milk (in Nutrition Reports International). The results of Schroeder's work have been reported in Time, Newsweek, Scientific American and in newspapers as far apart as Boston and Adelaide. His formal training in chemistry, physics and the Earth and planetary sciences provides the basis for the broad scientific perspective he brings to his books and lectures. For the past twenty-five years, Dr. Schroeder has also pursued a study of ancient biblical interpretation. An ability to handle the biblical material in the original languages allows him to tap the subtle depths contained in the original texts. These nuances are often missed when working with translations. The uniqueness and success of Schroeder's approach integrating biblical and scientific knowledge is demonstrated by the success of his first book, Genesis and the Big Bang (published by Bantam Doubleday), and the wide acclaim for his second book The Science of God (published by The Free Press of Simon & Schuster and Broadway Books of Bantam Doubleday) which was on the Barnes & Noble list of non-fiction best sellers and was Amazon.com's best selling book in the field of physics/cosmology for all of 1998. This was followed by The Hidden Face of God, discovering the unity that binds all existence (published by The Free Press of Simon & Schuster). His book, God According to God, A scientist proves we've been wrong about God all along, was published in May 2009 with HarperOne and has enthusiastic endorsements by leading theologians, both Jewish and Christian, and a Noble Laureate scientist.
