Market Failures, Taxes, and Subsidies: Crash Course Economics #21

12:12
This week on Crash Course Econ, Jacob and Adriene are talking about failure. Specifically, we're talking about market failures. When markets don't provide a good or service efficiently, that's a market failure. When markets fail, often governments step in to provide those services. Stuff like public education or military protection are good examples of market failures. So, what are some of the ways governments address, market failures? Well, it's funny you should ask, as we also talk about that in this episode. We'll get into taxes and subsidies and externalities and a bunch of other important stuff this week on Crash Course Econ. American Imperialism: Crash Course US History #28

14:04
In which John Green teaches you about Imperialism. In the late 19th century, the great powers of Europe were running around the world obtaining colonial possessions, especially in Africa and Asia. The United States, which as a young country was especially suceptible to peer pressure, followed along and snapped up some colonies of its own. The US saw that Spain's hold on its empire was weak, and like some kind of expansionist predator, it jumped into the Cuban War for Independence and turned it into the Spanish-Cuban-Phillipino-American War, which usually just gets called the Spanish-American War. John will tell you how America turned this war into colonial possessions like Puerto Rico, The Philippines, and almost even got to keep Cuba. The US was busy in the Pacific as well, wresting control of Hawaii from the Hawaiians. All this and more in a globe-trotting, oppressing episode of Crash Course US History. Our Subbable Dooblydoo message today is from James Williams. He writes, "Gracie Mckenna, luck is, indeed, for suckers." As America transitioned from the 19th to the 20th century, she experimented with imperialism through war and annexation; one of the most lasting effects of this time was the annexation of Hawaii, America's 50th state: https://www.commonlit.org/texts/the-1897-petition-against-the-annexation-of-hawaii America’s imperial aims continued for decades, particularly with the Monroe Doctrine: https://www.commonlit.org/texts/the-monroe-doctrine-and-american-imperialism Follow us! @thecrashcourse @realjohngreen @crashcoursestan @raoulmeyer @thoughtbubbler

Is the Party Over for Economic Growth? When economic stagnation becomes the new normal

01:25:09
Want to join the debate? Check out the Intelligence Squared website to hear about future live events and podcasts: http://www.intelligencesquared.com __________________________ It was a blast. Since the Industrial Revolution, we enjoyed unprecedented economic growth, propelled by a seemingly unstoppable wave of technological innovation. For 100 years from around 1870, life in the West was transformed by inventions such as electricity, the car and domestic appliances, which led to soaring growth, better lives and booming wealth for all. The poor became less poor, and the number of middle income earners exploded. In the second half of the 20th century the rest of the world began to catch up, with China lifting hundreds of millions out of extreme poverty and the rise of the BRICs. But then it stopped. Since around 1970, middle incomes in the US have stagnated, while the top 1% have pulled away in terms of earnings and wealth. Productivity growth fell. The great recession of 2008 was expected to be a blip but we are still in the doldrums. China’s miracle growth has shuddered to a slowdown and is set to drop even further. Just last week, the European Central Bank announced fresh rounds of quantitative easing to try and pump life into the eurozone’s flagging economy. Many economists are now predicting that stagnation is here to stay. We may hear a lot of excited talk from the techno-optimists about the Second Machine Age and the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the rewards they are set to bring us, but some say that most of the fruits of the IT revolution have already been harvested. For example, driverless cars may be the future, but they will change the world far less than the invention of cars in the first place – and put millions of professional drivers out of a job. If the age of endless growth is over, how should we assess the implications? Does the developed world face decades of misery-inducing recession, or – given that the planet’s resources are finite – can we look forward to a more sustainable future where ever-increasing consumption does not count as the main good? Or are the economic doom-mongers wrong? Will capitalism, that engine of human ingenuity, continue to be the route to rising prosperity for all? If so, what are the mechanisms that will kick-start the global economy again? On 16th May 2016, we were joined by a star panel for this major discussion on the future of the global economy. On stage were Stephanie Flanders, JP Morgan’s chief market strategist for Europe; Deirdre McCloskey, acclaimed US economic historian; and Tim Jackson, Professor of Sustainable Development at the University of Surrey and author of 'Prosperity Without Growth: Economics for a Finite Planet'. The event was chaired by Economics Editor of BBC News Kamal Ahmed.

Money and Finance: Crash Course Economics #11

10:36
So, we've been putting off a kind of basic question here. What is money? What is currency? How are the two different. Well, not to give away too much, but money has a few basic functions. It acts as a store of value, a medium of exchange, and as a unit of account. Money isn't just bills and coins. It can be anything that meets these three criteria. In US prisons, apparently, pouches of Mackerel are currency. Yes, mackerel the fish. Paper and coins work as money because they're backed by the government, which is an advantage over mackerel. So, once you've got money, you need finance. We'll talk about borrowing, lending, interest, and stocks and bonds. Also, this episode features a giant zucchini, which Adriene grew in her garden. So that's cool. Real Estate Investors Benefits of Small Local Community Banks for Real Estate Investing

A small bank can be a real estate investor's best friend! Look for small local community banks in your local area. These banks can be a great resource for an investor that is looking for a small bank that is a portfolio lender that will loan money on real estate. Also, these banks can be a tremendous resource for finding bank owned foreclosures, called REOs. Contact your local banks and see what resources may be available to you. Go make it a great day. 8 Things to Do BEFORE You Start Selling on Amazon (Tips for New Amazon Sellers)

10:33
Learn the 8 things to do BEFORE you start selling on Amazon & create an Amazon store. ►► How to Make 10k/Month Online ebook: http://wholesaleted.com/4-step ***VIDEOS REFERENCED*** How to Create an Amazon Account: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZjFjJNWLis How to Start an Aliexpress Dropshipping Store with No Money: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CWrd2gdTIs Amazon Restricted Categories: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3Idp0CuKSg First thing to do BEFORE you start selling on Amazon: Get an Amazon Pro Merchant Account Why? Because having an Amazon Pro Merchant Account is a necessary prerequisite to winning the Buy Box. Winning this is crucial as a new seller for two reasons: 1) About 80% of sales are made using the Buy Box - so not winning this means you miss out on crucial sales opportunities. 2) When you are the featured seller in the Buy Box the number of reviews you have are not featured, so it means that new sellers won’t be discriminated against for having little-to-no reviews by buyers. Even though it costs money compared to opening a free seller account, I strongly recommend it because you’ll make more money with one. Second thing to do BEFORE you start selling on Amazon: Have the documents ready when applying for an Amazon account When creating an Amazon account, you will need the following documents: 1) Photos of a national ID (like a passport or a drivers license). 2) A bank statement with your address on it. So before you start an account, take photos and download your latest bank statement and upload these documents when Amazon asks for them. Third thing to do BEFORE you start selling on Amazon: Act fast - DON’T wait! Amazon is regularly changing their requirements. For example… * In 2014 they changed Personal Care into a restricted category. * In 2016 they made it so new FBA sellers couldn’t send in their first shipment during the 4th quarter. * And in 2017, they changed it so you need to upload proof of ID documents during the account creation process. The sooner you get started, the easier it’ll be. Fourth thing to do BEFORE you start selling on Amazon: Pick your Amazon business model There are several types of business models to pursue when opening your Amazon store (private labeling, wholesale selling, dropshipping & retail arbitrage). Before you open your Amazon business, you need to pick the right one that meets your skillset and access to resources. For example, private labeling has the advantage of being very hands-off. But it requires a large upfront investment. While a dropshipping business takes more time to manage, but it requires a lot less money to get started. Weigh up the pros & cons. Fifth thing to do BEFORE you start selling on Amazon: Get a credit card (or a debit card) When you sell on Amazon you need to pay selling fees. To pay these, Amazon requires you have either a credit card or a debit card. You cannot use a Payoneer card or a prepaid debit card. If you don’t have this, then consider opening an Aliexpress dropshipping store on your own website. Sixth thing to do BEFORE you start selling on Amazon: Figure out a plan to manage your cash flow Don’t be afraid by the word “cash flow.” All we mean is that you need to have a plan for how you are going to pay for the items you are going to sell. Why? Because Amazon holds your money for 2 weeks as a new seller. This means: 1) If you’re dropshipping, you need to have money to use in the meantime to order the items the customer has purchased. 2) If you’re private labeling, it’s prudent to have money set aside to replace inventory if your product gets super-successful super-fast. While you could save up hundreds to thousands of dollars, the easiest way to manage this is with a credit card. If you don’t have a credit card then I recommend working on your credit score and making it a priority to get one. Seventh thing to do BEFORE you start selling on Amazon: Check if the category you want to sell in is restricted Some item categories on Amazon are unrestricted (ungated categories) and you can sell in them without submitting an application (e.g. home & gardening). But some categories are restricted (gated categories). Some categories are very easy to get unrestricted in (like clothing & accessories) but some are more difficult (e.g. food & grocery). Be sure to check before getting started. Eighth thing to do BEFORE you start selling on Amazon: Set aside time each day/week to manage/grow your Amazon business. Make sure you set aside time each day to fulfill orders & answer emails/questions. And set aside time each week to grow your business. For many this will be working on weekends. Doing this can be challenging: But it’s a right of passage that most business owners go through. So don’t get discouraged: The rewards are well worth it!

08 common Interview question and answers - Job Interview Skills

12:25
08 common Interview question and answers - Job Interview Skills 1. "Tell me a little about yourself." You should take this opportunity to show your communication skills by speaking clearly and concisely in an organized manner. Because there is no right or wrong answer for this question, it is important to appear friendly. 2. "What are your strengths?" This is a popular interview question. They want to know what you think of yourself. Although this is a general question, there is a wrong and right answer. The wrong answer is a generic answer saying you are organized and friendly. Although it will not hurt you during the interview, it will certainly not help you either. Answer this question based on the type of job you are applying for. 3. "What are your weaknesses?" For this answer, you should display a weakness that can be seen as a strength. There are many types of answers that will work. Some answers will be good answers for certain jobs, while the same answer will be a bad answer for a different job. Select an answer that will work for the position you are applying for. 4. "Where do you see yourself in five years?" This question primarily depends on where you are in your career. A person with 5 years of experience will have different goals than a person with no work experience. This question is asked to see how serious a candidate is about his or her career. Some people might not know their goals, and some people might have goals of becoming rich and retiring early. Those are incorrect answers for this question. The type of answer you want to give is an ambitious answer that shows you really love your career. A good interviewer will read between the lines and find out if a person is going to be a hard worker or just a mediocre one. Being descriptive and shooting for a big goal is something interviewers want to hear. 5. "What do you know about our company?" A typical job interview question, asked to find out how much company research you have conducted, is "What do you know about this company?" Prepare in advance, and in a word, research, so you can provide relevant and current information about your prospective employer to the interviewer. 6. "Are you good at dealing with change?" Dealing with change is common in the work place. A simple yes will not be sufficient to impress the interviewer. This is another type of question where everyone will have similar answers. Of course everyone is going to claim being excellent dealing with change. You got to communicate that you are really good at dealing with change. 7. "Do you work well under pressure?" In most cases, the best answer to this question is answering yes. Working well under pressure is a good trait to have. However, I think if you answer that you work the same with pressure and without pressure, the interviewer will be more impressed. However, you will need to explain in words why this is better. 8. "How do you make important decisions?" There are many ways to answer this question, and if you have a reasonable method of making decisions, it will probably be sufficient. One answer I thought of included not being afraid of asking your manager. You can follow up by saying even the best needs mentoring, and you always want to improve. So basically, this could work as an answer, but depending on the job, you might have a better shot with an answer like my example.
Free Trade, Flaws of a Market Economy, International Monetary Fund: Joseph Sitglitz (2006)

01:32:25
The first major protest in Seattle, Washington against the World Trade Organization (WTO) and its role in promoting economic globalization came as a surprise to many, considering the positive impacts globalization was supposed to bring. About the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0393330281/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0393330281&linkCode=as2&tag=tra0c7-20&linkId=8f99f38c891c395fa4121f515b9a1fe3 According to Stiglitz, this was the first step in a widespread recognition that globalization was all "too good to be true." Along with globalization comes a myriad of concerns and problems, says Stiglitz. The first concern being that the rules governing globalization favors developed countries, while the developing countries sink even lower. Second, globalization only regards monetary value of items, rather than other factors involved; one being the environment. The next concern is how developing countries are controlled by globalization and the negative effects it can have on their democracies. Developing countries borrow a large amount of funds from other countries and the World Bank which essentially causes them to give up the benefits of their democracy because of the strings attached to the loan repayment. The fourth concern regarding globalization is the notion that it does not live up to its original expectations. Globalization was advertised to boost countries economically; however, it has not shown improvement in developed nor developing countries. Last but not least, the new system of globalization has basically forced a new economic system on developing countries. This new economic system is seen as the "Americanization" (Stiglitz, Page 9) of their policies as well as culture. This has caused quite a bit of resentment and financial damage. In addition to these concerns, Stiglitz highlights that individual persons and whole countries are being victimized by globalization. Globalization had succeeded in unifying people from around the world — against globalization. Factory workers in the United States saw their jobs being threatened by competition from China. Farmers in developing countries saw their jobs being threatened by the highly subsidized corn and other crops from the United States. Workers in Europe saw hard-fought-for job protections being assailed in the name of globalization. AIDS activists saw a new trade agreement raising the prices of drugs to levels that were unaffordable in much of the world. Environmentalists felt that globalization undermined their decade long struggle to establish regulations to preserve our natural heritage. Those who wanted to protect and develop their own cultural heritage saw too the intrusions of globalization. — Stiglitz, 2006, p. 7 Stiglitz then goes on to provide an overview of how we might "reform" globalization, by noting representatives of the world's national governments attended the Millennium Summit and signed the Millennium Development Goals, pledging to cut poverty in half by 2015. Additionally, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) had previously been focusing more on inflation, rather than employment and income; however, they have shifted their focus in hopes of reducing poverty. Stiglitz states that countries who seek financial assistance have in the past been asked to meet an outrageous number of conditions, in exchange for the aid. This was one of the most common complaints towards the IMF and the World Bank. They have heard these complaints and have since greatly reduced the conditionality. The G8 group met for their annual meeting in 2005 and had agreed to write off debt owed by the 18 poorest countries in the world as an attempt to help with the global poverty issue. As regards the aspiration to make trade fair, originally, opening the market was done in hopes of helping the economy; however, the rights between the developing and developed countries have been skewed, and the last trade agreement actually put the poorest countries in a situation in which they were worse off than to begin with. Stiglitz focuses on the limitations of liberalization briefly to say the results of liberalization never lived up to the expectations; the developing countries were not able to follow through because their economic and political systems simply could not cope with the pressures. Finally, Stiglitz also argues that protecting the environment is one of the most important issues and countries must work together to lessen the effects of global warming. Successful development in countries such as India and China has only increased energy usage and also the use of natural resources. People from all over the world must adjust their lifestyle in order to reverse the effects of global warming. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Making_Globalization_Work Image By World Economic Forum [CC-BY-SA-2.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0)], via Wikimedia Commons

10/22/2018: 'Ice Silk Road': who benefits? | Violence in the Middle East: Immense suffering

28:19
The 2018 Arctic Circle Assembly, an international conference discussing the future of the Arctic, took place from October 19 to 21 in Reykjavik. Apart from the abundance of natural resources in the region, transport could be one of the greatest opportunities for exploitation. At certain times of the year, polar routes can be 30 to 40 percent shorter than the conventional Suez Canal route linking East Asia and northern Europe. What opportunities are there in the Arctic and how would nations compete in this regard? Two exclusive interviews separately discussed the long-term impact of violence in the Middle East and efforts by a photography project to help children affected by the violence. Project SEARCH | Cincinnati Children's

04:53
https://www.cincinnatichildrens.org/service/p/project-search Inside one Cincinnati’s top banks, you’ll find new employee Edie Bahlman crunching numbers. However, Edie’s journey to getting hired at Fifth Third Bank’s central file room is different than most. She has a disability, autism, but that didn’t stop Edie from pursuing her goal of getting a full time job after high school. “I’ve been using good organizational skills, being part of a team and giving good eye contact,” said Edie Bahlman. Edie joins a growing list of graduates from a program that started at Cincinnati Children’s called Project SEARCH, the brainchild of Erin Riehle. “I was the nursing director of the Emergency Department here at Cincinnati Children’s and I happened to look out into the lobby and was struck by the fact that many of the people coming to us as patients were people with disabilities,” said Erin Riehle, Senior Director of Disability Services and Project SEARCH. “Yet, when I checked behind the scenes there weren’t many opportunities for these people to grow up and continue to be involved at Cincinnati Children’s as employees.” Erin partnered with Susie Rutkowski at Cincinnati Children’s and together they came up with the Project SEARCH curriculum. It focuses on young people with disabilities between the ages of 18 to 22. In their final year of high school, those students leave the classroom and move to Cincinnati Children’s or another host business to intern for the entire school year. “Many of the young people have had low expectations for them from family members, schools, and we have to change that in a very short period of time,” said Susie Rutkowski, Co-Director of Project SEARCH. “So we are looking at things like grooming and hygiene, communication, problem solving skills, independence and time management.” Project SEARCH is an intensive 9 month course for a group of 10-12 students that involves a combination of classes, skill assessments, skills training and evaluations from a team including the instructor, managers and skills trainers. Each day begins and ends with an instructor keeping them on track. “We would do a lot of reflection in Project Search,” said Tina Martin, Project SEARCH Instructor. “Every day, at the end of the day, we would come back after and I would ask them what did you learn about yourself today? What can you take from today and improve tomorrow?” Today Project SEARCH is beyond the walls of Cincinnati Children’s and has expanded to more than 500 programs across the US and the world. “Our overall employment rate among all of our programs is 75.5 percent and that makes us one of the best, if not the best transitional programs in the United States,” said Riehle. “We understood that individuals with disabilities through Project SEARCH is an untapped market. It was an untapped recruitment stream that we could have access to. We could bring them in, train them on the types of jobs we have, and give them the skills needed so that they can transition into permanent employment. We’ve seen great success at Fifth Third and we’ve seen great success in the communities as well,” said Mitch Morgan, Vice President Inclusion and Diversity Manager at Fifth Third Bank. Also expanding, the variety of jobs. Project SEARCH graduates now work in a range of industry sectors. Cengage, an educational services and publishing company, recently joined the growing list to offer not just training in marketable skills but opportunities for career growth that includes benefits, incentives and retirement options. “I would love to run all my employees through those classes about budgeting, about money, how to handle difficult situations, that life piece combined with being in a real life work environment is what makes Project SEARCH completely different than anything else I have ever seen and that’s why those folks are able to make that transformation and be successful,” said Mary Ann Gayheart, Executive Director of Human Resources at Cengage. “A key part of success is that both sides see and learn something new about the other,” said Riehle. Changing the culture of families and the general perception of people with disabilities is what Project SEARCH is all about. Just ask Edie Bahlman. “My favorite thing about coming to work every day is getting the work done and being on task,” said Bahlman. “To change the culture of businesses and organizations, to change the culture of just the general public about the perception of people with disabilities and what they can and can’t do,” says Susie Rutkowski. Adds Erin Riehle, “I’m awfully proud that because this hospital and Project SEARCH, there are thousands of people with disabilities working around the United States and the world that wouldn’t have been otherwise had it not been for this program.”

Globalization I - The Upside: Crash Course World History #41

11:51
In which John Green teaches you about globalization, a subject so epic, so, um, global, it requires two videos. In this video, John follows the surprisingly complex path of t-shirt as it criss-crosses the world before coming to rest on your doorstep, and eventually in your dresser. (Unless you're one of those people who never puts their laundry away and lives out of a laundry basket. If that's the case, shame on you.) Anyway, the story of the t-shirt and its manufacture in far-flung places like China, Guatemala, and India is a microcosm of what's going on in the global economy. Globalization is a bit of a mixed bag, and there have definitely been winners and losers along the way. In this episode John will talk about some of the benefits that have come along with it. Next week, he'll get into some of the less-positive side effects of globalization. Also, you should turn on the captions. Water's Promise

Water today is undervalued, misused and misallocated. Too many of us take it for granted - we turn on the tap and it flows. But did you know only 4% of Earth’s water is freshwater and only 0.5% of that is safe for human consumption? As shocks of drought and deluge unleash their devastation, water has forced itself to center stage. It demands that we change fundamentally; it asks that we value it profoundly. Do you value water? The Value of Soil

04:46
The ELD initiative produced a short information film on the importance of the economics of Land Degradation. The ELD film depicts the value of productive land in provision of ecosystem services and goes on to show the current rapid depletion of this valuable non-renewable resource, which costs us dearly. But how can we prevent this? We have to include the value of the soil's services and the cost of land degradation into our calculation to show that using soils in the way that most of us do today is simply not reasonable in the long run. The ELD initiative has been set up to find out more about these actual costs by bringing together scientists, decision-makers in politics and industry and local land users from all over the world to calculate and discuss: How high are the costs of in-action? What needs to be done? And to further describe and communicate the benefits of adopting sustainable land management practices. http://eld-initiative.org/index.php?id=51&tx_ttnews[tt_news]=38 About ELD: The Economics of Land Degradation (ELD) is an initiative for a global study on the economic benefits of land and land based ecosystems. The initiative highlights the value of sustainable land management and provides a global approach for analysis of the economics of land degradation. It aims to make economics of land degradation an integral part of policy strategies and decision making by increasing the political and public awareness of the costs and benefits of land and land-based ecosystems.
