This is Part 4 (of 4) of a video series on writing the New SAT Essay. In this lesson, I provide a step-by-step system (a formula, a template!) for how to actually write the essay. Additionally, I give you a completed essay as an example of what can be done with this system. Also included are directions on where to find the free downloadable PDF template. Thanks for viewing and I sincerely hope this helps you understand and master the New SAT Essay.

Thank You so much.I am from India and will be giving Sat on 1st of December as i am being home schooled i had no idea what Sat Essay is all about, all your strategies and videos are not less than a life saver for me as i finally understood something!!👍
Can you tell how the other devices are persuasive? I mean the "How piece" that is at the end of the paragraph. I need the template that I can use in every essay. You have explained about the three but please tell me what I can write in the last sentence in case of other persuasive devices. Well I could have bought the book but I have my SAT after 2 days.
For the hook sentence in first paragraph you said to write catchy lines. I was wondering if that line should be from the paragraph itself or some obvious quotes or lines from outside.
It's said that everything should be from the passage and i was confused.
I have sat in a week so please reply me soon enough.
Hi Aaki and thanks for your question. You know, I don't remember saying that you needed to write a catchy hook. I know I included one in my example, but the intro would have been fine without it. The main point of the intro is to identify the author, passage title, and claim that the author makes. Also, you must include your thesis statement, which is the 3 persuasive devices you identified that you will analyze. Honestly, if you can craft a hook that leads the intro, then great. If not, I wouldn't be concerned. If you need some examples, check out the published and scored example essays on the College Board website. Most of the higher scoring essays keep their intro to 2-3 sentences. Very few use a hook. The readers of your essay know that you only have 50 minutes to complete the task, so don't stress out too much about the hook. Focus more on your analysis. Hope that helps.
You are so very welcome. I'm happy to hear that these videos helped you. I tried to break it down and give students a system that will work with any passage. I'd love to hear back after you take the SAT Essay. Best of luck to you.
Update 1: took the SAT with essay.. I felt super defeated last night when I tried to write an essay (for the first time was my mistake) and just froze completely. Come today, I think I did well enough to get an OK score... Next update when I get my scores.
I believe this video series helped with producing an essay that will be OK.
Yeah i got that! The essay was easy, the writing section was easy, but the reading section was a mess cause i had no watch and i was sitting at the end of the room away from the clock! I didn't know how much i've spent on each passage 😂 Overall good
How was the math section?
Hi Gela, Glad you are finding the videos helpful. You can find the other two essays at www.testprepspot.com. Or, you can go to my "store" on Teachers Pay Teachers. On both sites, the product is called "Start to Finish: The Complete Guide to Writing the New SAT Essay." Good luck to you!
Hi Abedelaziz. You are correct that the introduction is short. You've got to think about it this way...the intro is a necessary part of the essay writing process, but it's not the "core" of the essay. You (and the essay readers) know that you only have 50 minutes to read, analyze, and write. The intro serves to tell your reader where you're going and show that you can organize and plan an essay. That's it. Your 3 body paragraphs show your analytical & writing skills. That's where you should concentrate the most effort, time, and word count. Hope that helps.
Hi Rush. Sorry for the delay. You can find example essay #2, essay #3, and an explanation of persuasive devices in my book "The New SAT Essay: A Complete Writing Guide" on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/New-SAT-Essay-Complete-Writing/dp/1537229427/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1501605602&sr=8-1&keywords=elizabeth+yoshida. If you order from Amazon it will be mailed to you as a book. The same book is also called "Start to Finish: The Complete Guide to Writing the New SAT Essay" on my website https://testprepspot.com/collections/all. If you order from my website, the product will be delivered to your e-mail inbox as a PDF. Hope that helps and thanks for watching the videos.
Hi Shreenath! I am so happy to hear that the videos helped you. Seriously, thanks for your comment and best of luck on the SAT. What else needs a video explanation? I've been throwing around the idea of working on the ACT essay. We'll see.
