Art Business - How to promote your art business

http://www.evancarmichael.com/support/ - SUPPORT ME :) Like this video? Please give it a thumbs up below and/or leave a comment - Thank you!!! "Hey Evan, I have been following for a while. I love the positive encouragement and the likeable social media you have created with sharing etc. I read and follow as much as I can. What I can't find and maybe you can help direct me to the right place is somewhere that I can find information that isn't as broad. I see many things about entrepreneurs, how to etc but it dosen't quite fit the mold of what I do. So many articles I have found talk about business will fail. Just toss it, rack it up as a learned experience and try again. Or help like find who your customers are. I know who they are by age, income, and all the other items that my insights and google tracking + my sales have told me, but I have a different case which I don't seem to be able to apply some of the methods. If my business fails, then I won't be starting a new one. I am a fine artist. What I sell is my artwork, gifts and merchandise based on my artwork, and eventually video tutorials on painting techniques etc. Only 2% to 5% of the population buys original art. My gifts and merchandise are aimed at home decor, office decor, jewelry and apparel to broaden the market of who will buy my products. Getting loans to open a store are not such a good idea as it takes time to build art clients. That's almost a guaranteed sink. If my business fails, starting a new one won't work. It's not like I'm creating a software app that may or may not hit, then in the next 6 months I'm trying opening a computer hardware repair business. It's not about choosing the right product, I am the product. Getting it right is detrimental to my business. There are quite a few artists who have landed the right path to financial success just like any other entrepreneur. It's a business. I create products, I look for licensing of my images, I create smaller items to purchase for those who don't fall into the 2 - 5 % category. I have to market, network, and promote just like any other business would. Add to that trying to build prestige, creating enough pieces for collections to show at galleries, attending festivals, and making public appearances. So why is it so hard to find information on how to for what I am doing? Information on where to look for Independent Sales Reps would be great. Or where / how to market for niche products? Even though I am more than dedicated and believe in my product / artwork 100%, I find that I am struggling to connect the dots. Most art business help books don't really seem to be geared to creating a large enterprise based on artist products. Instead they try to coddle and persuade artists to become organized as if we were addlepated helpless drooling idiots who can't manage to have a cohesive though. The business advise geared toward us is to take 2 and 3 jobs on top of the full time job we already have creating, promoting, selling, showing, and marketing what we create. I see artists like Tripp Harrison who's Florida gallery takes in over 2 million every year, or Guy Harvey who's products created from his artwork is in every gift shop along the cost in the US as well through the islands and cruise lines. These guys are raking it in. How do I reach that level of entrepreneurship where I am no longer a one person owned small business but instead have multiple employees, sell my products across the globe, and create the business that I see when I create my goals? The standard protocol dosen't seem to apply. Are there resources out there that you know of that you wouldn't mind pointing me in the direction to so that I can help myself progress? Thanks so much for you time, I appreciate it. Allison Richter - allisonrichterwildlifestudio.com" Help us caption & translate this video! http://amara.org/v/DVel/

This is great! Thank you for sharing these words of wisdom! This is really refreshing for me as an artist and art teacher. Even as a teacher inspiring others in their art, it’s important for “even the teacher” to hear things like this to help boost our confidence in what we’re doing. I’m trying to “think bigger” currently in my business... Thanks again

Hi Evan, a friend who believes in me sent me this video and it was just heart-wrenchingly inspiring! I have a blog, a FB page and a twitter account. I just had an art show and did three well attended and very much liked presentations, yet no one buys! I have three different styles, however. One comes from a background of severe trauma, and I want people to care, to feel sorrow that such things happen in this world. But I am also moving past the trauma-inspired art into life-inspired art, which uses vivid color (in my trauma art too, color is a huge draw) in what I have come to call “fractured portraits”.

Great stuff Evan: As an artist, I'm all about 'Feeling Free'. Feeling free gives us the scope to experiment, being crazy. It opens our minds to absorb knowledge, observe whats goin on around us, to feel the air around us. People would like to be engulfed in work day and night, and while that's one way to live, I like to have free time to be able to explore and feel stuff and emotions that I wanna feel. In my work I express on the emotions of feeling free. Its this feeling of freedom that makes me wanna go do stuff like paragliding and sea diving, or simply sitting with my friends on a hill top around a bonfire chatting about random things. Its this feeling of freedom that I'm all about. I'm working towards buying a house that is empty and live there for days in the nude with my partner, just being, and exploring the emptiness... feeling free. Luckily my partner feels this too. Let her off the hook (from work nd family) and she'll do exactly that. My art (the ones I've painted and the ones in my head) is also all about just that. I feel that those who like my work would like it coz it would make them hopeful of feeling free. Could you give me some tips as I'm bad at expressing myself too when it comes to marketing.

I'm tryin to get my art work out there. Having to start my.life over financially from a divorce. My ex-husband new wife freaking corners me in every aspect that I try. She annoys the crap out of me. I'm frustrated I have art work that I would like to sell and have been told I have the potential to sell my art work as well, and having difficulties I. Getting hired for a job outside of drawing, is a struggle for me as well. I guess that is the luck of being an exwife that lives in the same town as the ex-husband and new wife. I think I'm.convinced I just need to live somewhere in an alternate dimension. LMFAO

I like when you mentioned 'keyword' in the middle of emotion speech. We have a different theory: emotion is great, idea is great, concept is great, believe is great. But these alone don't help building a good communication. You need to attract people to share, you first need to be discovered. Having a good keyword strategy would help others discover your art on Google.

This was really inspiring! I'm just starting out my art business and was feeling like I'm a little all over the place (I am drawing/painting classic cars/sports cars/offroad vehicles/outdoor lifestyle). I couldn't see the connection between these things (aside from the obvious- they all have motors). But this video helped me take a step back and think about what connects these and what emotion I want to evoke. It came pretty quickly- rememberance. Remembering happy times. I want someone to look at my 58 Impala painting and remember when they were a kid and those cars were everywhere. Or see my snowmobile drawing and remember that day last year they had a blast with their friends and managed to pull that awesome catwalk up a hill. Or see that hotrod sketch and remember spending time with their dad in the garage and he showed them how to take apart a motor. And so on. So thank-you for taking the time to post this!

Really hit me today with some powerful conversation. I was sitting here on a rainy day in the UK and was wondering if I was being silly for dreaming about being an artist that brings value. Then in the video, there was a mention of having a word/thing you stand for and it hit me, I use my creativity to feel Alive. I believe in life and feeling it at it's most powerful when you embrace your creativity. As always Thanks Evan and hands up high for the #BelieveNation

Loved it! I don't speak much, but I have my words and my art and I have stood by what you just said since the day, I stepped into the field to empower artists in India. Today I am a business artist and a visionary, with a mission to unite with artists who can empower and create a revolution, can think bigger as Steve Jobs and Da Vinci, once did. I am still at it, building my vision for art in India, which people fail to envision. I am happy, I stood by my belief, as it needs to be done and the time is now. The ecosystem, which I have designed is larger than anything many of heard nor could relate too. As I realized in my journey, we as a society and its people were not educated to see Art & business together, hence several artists had to stand for their own art and then work hard to survive, in what they believed the most.  I am very happy to hear you Evan and so relate to what you said. I wish we could unite, and unite like minded artists like us, who could build something together and empower the world of artists and the new generation through art and innovation. The algorithm of my design is borderless and could seed this new movement, so our coming generation of artists have the opportunities, which we have struggled for generations until now. THINK ARTIST, THINK VISIONARY is my motto, if we direct and seed this thought, we may direct our society, entrepreneurs, industries and leaders to create a larger than life platform. So, lets connect and keep in touch, maybe we shall speak soon too.  Love always,  Pranaay Katke Founder, Art Visionary  United Kalakar Mumbai. This is the first time I have seen one of your videos and I believe that the Goddess directed me right to it. It is exactly what I needed. I got a "late" start with art . Didn't begin learning until I was in my mid-30's. It took 20 years but I have been selling my art, slooooowly, for the last couple of years. I tell you, this video was my missing puzzle piece. The light has gone on over my head. In the course of a few minutes, I realized what I stand for. I stand for the earth, nature, our precious environment. I create landscapes and furred and feathered creatures. I stand for nature! Bless you! Subscribed, liked and shared with all my artist friends. <3

Trotter (1 year ago)
Just like to say that you did really give some good advice here mostly about the specifics of honing abstract concepts about what art actually offers. I think people start to think of it as a commodity and then they forget that it is inspiring/uplifting or connects with an audience. The difference between making work for yourself and for other people. Belief is such a strong word that hinges on hope. Belief systems create religions that take on lives of their own good or bad...I do believe. And in fact have several things that say Believe in Gold lettering in my home to give me hope in a future. I believe in God despite what the world tells me and in spite of the evil in the world. I have faced insurmountable odds and come across deep waters and there have been many times when I chose to believe or not believe-those were the times that God stepped in and said "I will teach you again to believe" and tiny miracles or even major ones started to collect like water droplets everyday. And I would make a mental note of them, until it became a pool that I could no longer deny-a force higher than myself was making Himself known.
Evan Carmichael (1 year ago)

Evan you bring up some good points that until now I had never even thought about, namely "What is my Art About" I had to think about that for a while since until now I've mainly been an Amateur Artist, but am now looking to make the move to the next level and try to sell some of my Paintings and maybe get some Commission work, so what is my Art about, this is what I came up with "Escape". Something that when you come in from a hard days work will help you Escape the pressures of the day if only for a few moments, whether it's a Beach/Surf/Seascape scene, a Mountain Landscape, or a Space/Sci-Fi/Fantasy scene from your favorite Franchise in that genre that reminds you of your favorite Movie/Episode. Now that I know what my Art is about I can more clearly communicate that to my Facebook/YouTube followers, Thank You Evan for making me realize this!! Facebook - 'SL.Studios.Art' if you want to check it out.

I am an old timer who after 25 years on an "involuntary pause" trying to get back in the ring, it;s a new world now. Your love and enthusiasm for us is a life saver. Evan, I would like to hear from you , I am ready for the 15 round game..I am a long term runner :) www.devywolff.com

I needed to hear this RIGHT NOW. I literally typed in "entrepreneur" and "artist" in the search bar. This video was the one. I could listen to this over and over again while I paint... which is what I'm doing now. I do this for a living. Painting from home, working and grinding everyday towards my craft... hearing stuff like THIS is what really helps and teaches me how to and what to do next in my career. This is the hardest thing I've ever done in my life... pursuing my dreams. Making a living from it, barely getting by each month but it's been one full year now I've worked for myself and it's all fucking worth it. Excuse my language. I'm stoked. Thank you. I BELIEVE my work evokes LOVE, FREEDOM, and TRUTH. Check out some of my work if you or anyone else would like, www.elainealonzo.com , patreon.com/elainealonzo , facebook.com/elainealonzoart , or instagram: @elainealonzo . I plan on creating a Youtube channel in the near future as well. You are inspiring. 💕

Hi Evan. I am in my early 50s and obviously not as "well-versed" with the media and technology as you guys from the younger generation seem to be. (Or perhaps I should rather say, my generation is generally a little shy at times when it comes to showing our faces and talking about our passion.) I am an artist and art teacher and I have to stick my head out now in order to give some publicity to what I do and intend to do. I avoided securing a website but I recently succumbed and now that is being done. It all started after I had a self-published a book about an art journey I enjoyed and then I was told by most of the YouTube-'preachers' that I need to have a website if I am a self-published author (and artist I suppose). So, I hope to be doing what you are urging us to do, very soon. For us as artists, the task seems rather daunting, because there is so much information out there, not to mention the imagery and flashing brands. I am currently teaching Art in China and I feel I am drowning in visual imagery. So it is quite natural for me to become passive and say, "What chance do I have to be seen on the digital or internet stage if there is so much out there already?" BUT I will put on my hopeful boots and enter that arena soon, to become part of the "colourful circus".  Your advice is very nice, because artists are usually not the best of marketers, but we have to become much wiser if we want to survive in the digital era.

Evan I'm so grateful for you tackling the artist subject! I am a full time metal sculptor and I've been watching your videos for over a year. The videos are always inspirational but this is exactly the advice I have needed to catapult my career. My word as an artist is BELIEVE. I believed in myself when no one else did and now I'm creating art and living a life beyond my wildest dreams! I am so grateful that you believed in yourself when no one else did! You have helped to made my life more beautiful. If your looking for art that represents believe I have a 10 foot tall dragon I'm creating!💙👩‍🏭

Thank you for such an inspiring video! I just subscribed. You are validating what I am trying to do. My message from my art is to live your life, do what you love. I will add "thinking big" to it. I've been trying to think of more ways to describe it. I will leave my instagram account since that is what one is supposed to do. Right now I am mostly posting about my travel in Germany and that art that inspires it. I am living my dream as a travel artist. www.instagram.com/sparrowshand
